Hello fellow FreeSpace enthusiasts.
The game Void Destroyer has been in development for four years now by one man in his spare time (with only artists helping with certain things) and has had a free alpha available for quite a while. It's a very unique game where you can directly control your ships, or with a tactical / strategic interface not unlike those of space RTS games of the past we all loved so much. It has a very challenging flight model with fairly complex Newtonian movement but does take place at "knife fight" ranges. Well it has finally reached the point where it's time to KickStart it and launch the Steam GreenLight campaign. I hope you guys take a look, I've enjoyed the older versions myself.

Looks promising.

Battlezone in space then? Nice.

Hey MesoTroniK - thanks for mentioning the project - I appreciate it - these kinds of posts are the oxygen of the campaign.
Hey guys - my name is Paul and I'm the developer behind Void Destroyer - If you have any questions or comments feel free to ask.
Thank you

Backed.

Gave the demo (http://www.voiddestroyer.com/download.html) a whirl this morning. Very nice. Take my money, etc etc. Looking forward to the beta. :D

Backed and playing the **** out of the demo. This thing already looks amazing, Paul!

Thanks! Appreciate it!

I really like the look and feel, how nexus should've been!!

Not until the UI becomes a lot more intuitive it's not. :P
Seriously, though, this game has some amazing potential; I have yet to take the Karakum and I'm still having a blast (whenever the game isn't glitching out or crashing, that is).
-
haven't experienced a glitch or crash myself
One thing that bothered me though, was the fact that your ships seem to always patrol around the facility that produced them, and without a Guard command making them move is kind of useless.
Upvoted for Greenlight, no money so i can't pledge :(
-
Thanks for checking it out guys.
Sorry about the crashes, I'm trying to replicate them on my end so I can fix them.
There is a Hold command - select a ship or multiple ships - then press H and that will be the will hold that position instead of patrolling. Large ships do this by default when issued a "go to command" - right mouse click on an empty spot in space. Smaller ships will patrol. I think fighters patrol no matter what - have to tweak that.
-
Reminds me on Starshatter ^^.
Was also an One Man RTS/Space-Sim Game with Multiplayer and optional dynamic campaigns in which you can move up the ranks from fighter/bomber pilot to squadron leader, corvette captain to Fleet Admiral at the end.
-
Yeah - I should watch a bit more of their vids, maybe grab some cool ideas.
-
I haven't checked out the demo yet, but one question: is it already moddable ? To what extent ?
-
Her'es the modding demo:

Basically the game runs off of xml files - so you can add/remove/edit/mod ship parameters, mission parameters, cutscenes, basically everything including the scene that appears on the main menu.
You can add objects (eg: ships). Its all located in the Data directory under the main game.

Well a good friend of mine made a gameplay video overlaid with a song most of you gentlemen would be familiar with, enjoy...

Probably best to credit the song as "Illusive Mind - émotif" :)
-
Don't look at me, but I'll forward that to him.
Edit: He fixed it.

Someone pointed out on YouTube that this game looks kind of drab, and I kind of agree -- the ships seem to use Colossus-issue grey/green as their base colour, and there's not much lighting. It's a pity because the actual models look pretty great, they're just barely visible.
-
Result of about a day of toying around with stuff (including discovering the game itself, going through ingame tutos and all).

RE: Drabness: - check out the alpha demo - the youtube vids might not be a very good indicator in some cases. While in game you can zoom in and out, and enjoy the action up close from the cockpit or chase cameras. From the first person only the fighter drones might feel small.
The ships have splashes of color and highlights using emissive lights (eg: windows).
Having said that - the aim is not to be too colorful due to the nature of the harsh environment (asteroid fields) and theme (war), but I think it is unique to look at.

Hey guys, thanks for watching my last video!
I figured I should make an account here since I do mod stuff occasionally... :)
Finished a video showing my mod pack version 13.6.10
Void Destroyer - Rinse and Repeat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuC6HOiP26A)
I also made a video by request from MesoTroniK check it out:

Hope you enjoy it! :D

Oh man. I just got at least three times more excited about this game just from the potential of a Blue Planet mod.
-
I PM'd the mod poster with an offer to - add in code to rotate the section that is supposed to be rotating- but never got a response (that I can recall). So... hopefully he'll get back to me.
Also while I'm here - an update -
I did a pod cast with Space Game Junkie - here - http://www.spacegamejunkie.com/featured/sgj-podcast-17-void-destroyer-dark-souls-space-games/ - Void Destroyer - The Dark Souls of Space Games?
If you are interested in the indie development process, indie life, the thoughts of someone crazy enough to try this and the game itself - it is a neat listen. A conversation is a lot less dry then text on the screen.
-
Ya I've just been busy this week. I'll get back to you eventually.
-
I will be watching this with interest. It's always good to know our favorite genre definitely isn't dead. And hey, with the cyclic nature of nature, it's due for a revival!
-
People tend to say that both space sim and rts are dead.
Its funny because - they aren't - its just that they went the indie love way.
-
Reminds me, a few years back, you could see in gaming magazines about Command & Conquer: Tiberium. It was supposed to have a similar concept, except it was on the ground instead of a space shooter. You play as a commando but also you have to command friendly units on the ground RTS style. Sadly, due to what appears to be internal executive conflicts, it was cancelled.
Looking at the Void Destroyer website, the closest equivalent that exist today is the conquest missions in Call of Duty Black Ops 2, which would have been very enjoyable if not for the bad AI.

Bump for a new trailer.

Four days left in the Kickstarter.

Backed it. Looks too much like Battlezone in Space to not support it :)

Thanks Mikes!

We are down to less than 48 - so you guys won't be spammed by me any more and I'll have to switch to the liquid form of sleep (caffeine).
Below is the final Kickstarter trailer (Meso already linked it but I'll link it again :) ):

Hey guys! I haven't "promoted/marketed" since Kickstarter... over 60 days I believe. With the recent 100 games being greenlit Void Destroyer jumped up in rankings, we are now in the top 100 (out of over 1300). So I'm devoting some time to get even higher in the rankings.
So - if you haven't yet - please vote for Void Destroyer making it into Steam - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=146068036 (since voting via the web page is somewhat clumsy you can also find Void Destroyer via going to the Steam Client - then clicking Community - then choosing Greenlight and entering in "Void Destroyer" into the search). And if you'd be so kind as to bug your Steam (and other) friends to vote that would be incredibly helpful as well.
Here is an updated video of updates since Kickstarter:
There is an updated demo on the main site here: http://www.VoidDestroyer.com so you can check out the changes.
Here's a vid where I talk about the recent mouse changes and time dilation system:
Here's a screen shot of the new repair ships:
