Hmmm. The metal is being suddenly exposed to super-cold fuel and they wonder why it's cracking.

Who gives a ****? NASA has basically become a agency where all they do is simply shuttle cargo up into space, so they can build an over-budget telephone station?
Geez, every astronaught, in the 1960s, was a hero, someone to be marveled at. But all they are now are just a bunch of guys who are boring people with bulky suits, sucking up tax-payer's dollars, to fund some boring cause. Send something to Mars, do something right! Put a colony on the moon! Something!

The space shuttle put the final nail in the American space program. It turned the whole thing into, essentially, an air freight operation. The public lost interest. Mind you, the space program had been dying since the late sixties: flying to the moon was such a non event that the all three television networks stopped carrying the launches and stories about the flight (barring some tragedy).

Now, a research colony on the moon I could get worked up about. I think we need to put more effort into the moon as an engineering test bed before we even consider manned expedition to Mars. Mars is a six month trip at its closest approach to Earth. Through its orbit, it goes from ~15 min of light lag to over ~90 min of light lag. 15 min is too long a delay to call home to report and get advice on an emergency.

they better solve this and start launching again or it's bye-bye manned space-program for you guys.

Then the Russian and later the Chinese will own everything up there.

That means Jabba the Hutt (russian mobsters) and the Clone Troopers (the billions of chinese) without a Rebellion. :D

I wish they would launch one or two more x-ray telescopes for us cosmologists. ;)

I am probably going into this theoretical cosmology stuff later on (either that or pure math), so I am trying to see what kinds of jobs NASA's research division offers for that.
