So when I try to start Blue planet 2 via FS2 Open launcher 5.5g, I get this error message:
sounds.tbl(line 629):
Error: Missing required token: [#Flyby Sounds End]. Found [$UEF: 0 T_flyby1.wav, 0, 0.75, 1, 200, 400 ] instead.

kernel32.dll! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_18.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_6_18.exe! <no symbol>
what am i mssing? In the FS2 Open launcher, in the Features i tried -mod Blue Planet 2, didn't register it, as well as blueplanet2 which gave me this error message.
ps: i guess this is a modding community, but i'm too stupid to program things so i just downloaded the installer for Blue planet 2. not sure wheter this goes into support or blue planet 2 subfolder.
also, this error appears before i start the game- and just crashes with that error message. you guys can figure this out, right?
pps: yes i did try this http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70511.0, but i don't know how to use checksums.

Please follow these instructions (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.msg1180359.html#msg1180359) and post your fs2_open.log.
-
One thing I would like to say is that Blue Planet is not compatible with 3.6.18 executables. Use the build which was provided in the complete install or download these builds. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83318.msg1664121#msg1664121)
Or if your computer does not support deferred lightning (i.e. you have Intel graphics), then you could take a recent nightly build, download this package (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83606.msg1670192#msg1670192) and enjoy.

Don't get confused with checksums. We'll fix the problem for you. Just run your game in a DEBUG build and let that crash happen. Then go to your Freespace2/data folder. There you will find a file called 'fs2open.log'. Attach that file to your post.
Just for information, checksums are used to check that you don't have corrupt VPs. You can check your VPs checksums by opening your fs2open.log in Wordpad. If the checksums of your VPs do not match the checksums given on the page you visited, then ... you have corrupt VPs and you need to redownload/reinstall those VPs.

Find the file called fs2_open.log.
-
Right don't give errorlog.text
Give fs2open.log (it's a file with extension as .log)
-
I just thought something.
Most people don't see what the actual file extension is, because Microsoft at some point decided it was good idea to make it a default setting to hide known file extensions.
For most people, the fs2_open.log file would actually look like "fs2_open" (probably with the unknown file type icon).
With "Details" view enabled, they would see something like
Filename Type
fs2_open LOG file
...whereas the errorlog.txt contains the word "log" in the filename.
Maybe there's some room for improved clarity and user-friendliness here.

there is no fs2_open.log being generated by the debugger of the 5.5 windows launcher, only an errorlog.txt. i can't help you if the forum gives me wrong advice on how to do something, i followed the advice and only got a .txt. I repeat. there is NO fs2_open.log
Just saying, but that means the troubleshooting forum is useless if you want .log and it only generates .txt.
it asks me for a .exe called "fs2_open_3_6_12d_inf" in the forum, but all i have is "fs2_open_3_6_17_DEBUG_SSE2_BP", "fs2_open_3_6_18_DEBUG". So with these two files, it doesn't work, but blue planet is supposed to work with fs2_open_3_6_17_debug, which is in the launcher itself, so this is all bs if you include a file and then it doesn't even work. I can post the errorlog.text. i can copy and paste the erros i recieve,

Okay calm down. I actually had no intention to irritate you.
Let's try one more time:
1) Run the game in DEBUGGER just as you did.
2) Let the game crash and exit it.
3) Go to your Freespace2 folder. (By default, C:/Games/Freespace2)
4) From there go to data folder.
5) Then check if there is the fs2open.log file. If it's not there then we will try to see what we will do.
As for the fs2_open3_6_12d_inf.exe , the time at which that post was written was when 3.6.12 was released. Now 3.6.18 executables are the latest. (To be honestly precise 3.7 builds are latest builds but they are in their RC phase i.e. not completely finished)
So you are perfect don't worry.

[rant]
could i at least, you know, actually get a proper way to obtain fs2_open.log?
[/rant]
Or the .exe for the debugger? i have tried all 3 debugger exes- "fs2_open_3_6_18_DEBUG", "fs2_open_3_6_18_DEBUG_NO-SSE", "fs2_open_3_6_17_DEBUG_SSE2_BP"
none of which have worked. I try to give you as much information as possible, and all i get is "K".
Personal log: 3_6_17 doesn't work at all and just crashes the game. 3_6_18 does work, with transcend, without mods, but not blue planet 2.
SO: most probable cause of crash: blue planet 2 mod folder. Transcend works.

3 my folder is C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2
4/5- only 3 files (not folders) are multi.cfg, multi.txt, tcp.cfg
i try to give good information, too but how should i without any good tools?
ok so now on the blue planet 2 website it said i need an inferno download (a mod). so i download that and install it or what?
also, in the launcher, should i add the custom flag -mod blueplanet2, -mod Blue Planet 2, -mod Blue_Planet_2, or -mod blue_planet_2 ???

In case you're running Vista or 7, there was one more bit in the instructions linked to you. Since you've installed FS2 and FSO under the "Program files" directory, your log has actually been written into C:\Users\<Your Username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Freespace 2\data. So please check there.

used the pc's search function. no fs2_open.log file. did not find anything under the appdata files.
there is absolutely no file on my whole pc called fs2_open.log, nor is there any file with the .log extension.
-
ACTUALLY
i have a fs2_open file... but it's a .txt.
HOLY CRAP IT SAYS THE IMAGE IS A .TXT AND IT SAYS .TXT BUT IT'S A DAMN .LOG WTF IS THIS BS
i even searched with the windows search function, but i didn't get any results.

AND IT MIGHT BE OPENING WITH NOTEPAD. That's normal. Don't worry.
One thing I would like to ask you is with which build you were playing,
'coz when I select fs2_open_3_6_17_SSE2_BP.exe I get this:
FreeSpace 2 Open version: 3.6.17.9481
while you are getting this:
FreeSpace 2 Open version: 3.6.18.9546

i am indeed using 3.6.18 because 3.6.17 doesn't work- neither sse, non sse, or standard.
besides, using 3.6.18 doesn't work either. in 3.6.18 it gives me the error messages, in 3.6.17 it just crashes without any errors (programs has stopped working bla bla)
-

THERE. THAT.
BP builds are different. Even though 3.6.18 seems to be more recent than the BP build, the BP build is an Antipodes build. Use that.
Now to come to the point.
What happens when you use 3.6.17 build? Does it crash at start? When does it crash? What error it gives just before crash?
-
Sorry I just saw your last statement now. :p
Do this:
Or if your computer does not support deferred lightning (i.e. you have Intel graphics), then you could take a recent nightly build, download this package (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83606.msg1670192#msg1670192) and enjoy.
-
#1 lesson from all of this: we need a way of explaining this that circumvents the mess of FSO releases proliferating right now and Windows' total cluster**** of a filesystem organisation scheme.
-
Last reply for this thread (I DAMN WELL HOPE, GIVE ME 1/2 HOURS)
ok. ok ok ok. so basically i tried reading up what sse was, no forum is able to explain it simply
-
Actually, you should not use the 3.6.17 build that comes with the Blue Planet installer because it has a number of serious bugs, including one that can destroy your pilot file. Instead, use this build (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83318.0) or the compatibility package (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83606.0). If you do use the compatibility package, you must use 3.7.0 or a nightly build; 3.6.18 will not work!
Also, you should absolutely move your FS2 installation out of Program Files and to a simpler path like Games\FreeSpace2. Not only will this help prevent the headache of needing to look for files in obscure and hidden folders, it will also prevent weird problems caused by directories being too long.
EDIT: Furthermore:
Found root pack 'C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\FreeSpace2\blueplanet2\adv-bp2.vp' with a checksum of 0x4d6319c8
Found root pack 'C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\FreeSpace2\blueplanet2\bp2-audio1.vp' with a checksum of 0x4f978a6b
Found root pack 'C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\FreeSpace2\blueplanet2\bp2-core.vp' with a checksum of 0x64e738b9

Found root pack 'C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\FreeSpace2\blueplanet2\bp2-visuals2.vp' with a checksum of 0x9689af32
Both your "blueplanet2" and "blueplanet" folders (and, indeed, all mod folders) need to be placed in your root FS2 folder, not in another subfolder. I'm almost certain this is what's causing the crash.
Found root pack 'C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\INF_Main.vp' with a checksum of 0xb7e1e9e6
That file does not belong there. Move or delete it.

Good one, Yarn. I hope MobileForce follows your advice.
Now if you want to know about SSE. Go here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_SIMD_Extensions)
Generally AFAIK if your CPU supports SSE2, then SSE2 will be faster than SSE which will be faster than NO_SSE.

TRIED IT with 3_6_19_sse2bp debug. didn't work, spewed back the same shizz about 105 missing iconspaces etc...
tried it without debug mode, just crashed and didn't give me anything- just crashed- still didn't work.
if you want, use teamviewer, and connect, figure out wtf is wrong (still not working with the newest nightly.)

Jesus Christ man, don't you ever put an id and a password for all the internet to see!
Also, correct your folder structures. As Yarn stated, put the .vp's from BluePlanet and BluePlanet 2 into their own separate folders.

you're kidding me, right? the compatability package is what i was using. i got the knigthly and the extra files. added them to the directory. didn't work. none of the damn exes.
there is literally a choice of 1: 3_6_19_SSE2_BP.exe. that is all included in the fso. compatability package is one file, added.
then using the other files of the fs2_open_3_6_19-DEBUG-20130630_r9699.exe
that crashes, too. i told you, go ahead and use the team viewer. It doesn't work neither with compatability package or the other package. Nightly doesn't work either. All files are in the sf2 folder. dun work. I cant help you, you need to acces my teamviewer or this will never ever work.

already done. there is no subfolder inside Freespace 2. now it looks like this:
C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Freespace 2\blueplanet2\
does it need to be in a folder called Freespace2 OR in a folder called Freespace 2 (WITH A SPACE?!?!)
currently downloading 3.7.0 rc2.
another log? is it different? I hope it changes everytime you launch the game and it doesn't work.

How many and which VPs are there in your blueplanet folder? (not blueplanet2 folder)
Reason:
Found root pack 'C:\Games\Freespace 2\blueplanet2\bp2-visuals2.vp' with a checksum of 0x9689af32
Found root pack 'C:\Games\Freespace 2\blueplanet\bp-compat.vp' with a checksum of 0x6ef45eaf
Found root pack 'C:\Games\Freespace 2\mediavps_3612\MV_Advanced.vp' with a checksum of 0x4b8b0f5a
1
because i downloaded an installation
didn't know you need blue planet 1? wtf? that's like buying crysis 3 but needing 2 and 1...
bp-combat.vp is all that's in the blueplanet folder under
C:\Games\Freespace 2\blueplanet
what's wrong with the 3 mediavps in my 3612 folder????
There is not 1 vp. There are 6 VPs, 7 when adding that single VP you have. Re-install BP.
EDIT: Re-edited my post because I thought that it was going too abusive. Sorry MobileForce.

but i never got bp1, only bp 2. ah bloody hell.
do i need bp age of aquarius?
where do i get the vps? i tried the thread
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=68213.0
but it doesn't show me where the vps are
(hopefully in the installer)
god i seem like such a ****ing noob+newb right now
don't know how to do ****.
see this is where a video connection would be good.
-
Yes, use the installer. Once you've done that, you may need to install the compatibility package again.
Also, after you reinstall Blue Planet, you should delete the following files:
blueplanet2\adv-bp2.vp
blueplanet\adv-bp.vp
mediavps_3612\MV_Advanced.vp
mediavps_3612\MV_AnimGlows.vp
Why? Because those files require lots of video RAM and support for very large textures (at least 4096x4096 I think), neither of which your video card has.
-
Hopefully your problems have come to an end. Yay!!!! :)
And you also taught me to check debug logs thoroughly. :p
-
I'm back
with another error log!
DON'T BE AFRAID THIS MIGHT BE SOLVED ALREADY???
you see, i can't get past the intro in the campaign of AoA. It just turns of and leaves no error message.
lets try to take this step by step:
created a profile
took the campaign for AoA
clicked start/ ready room
the intro played (if you press esc it asks you if you want to quit this campaign)
then the game closed. that's it.
i can make a video if need, but here is the fs2_open.log (If that helps?)

i did get rid of mv advanced and anim glows.

Okay this thing seems to be impossible for me. :blah:
Still we could give it a try.
You said that you have created a new profile. I think you meant a new pilot.
So could you go to Freespace2/data/players folder and delete this file:
<your pilotname>.bp.csg <----- where <your pilotname> is your pilot name. Note that this is a file with .csg extension.
Also do not delete the file with .plr extension, just delete the .csg extension one. Good Luck trying 'coz I wasn't able to find the cause of your error.
EDIT: I just found out your pilot name which is Blue Planet 2. Delete the file called Blue Planet 2.bp.csg.
Also if this doesn't work delete your whole pilot name in game and create a new pilot. (preferrably with another name.)
-
If I understand correctly, your problem now is that the game ends if you try to skip the intro mission, correct? You can't really do that, but you can fast-forward by pressing shift+. (the period key) several times.

Oh, I thought that he isn't able to proceed to the next mission. :banghead:
Well the solution is then simple and Yarn has already given it.

Lol!
You're both wrong. I cannot progress the intro mission cinematic because it CRASHES!

Is it crashing just after a fade to white (the end of the cutscene)? If not, then where exactly is it crashing? (Your description wasn't clear on this.)

We both were wrong. Well then I suggest what you should do:
1) Delete the Blue Planet 2.bp.csg in your Freespace2/data/players folder.
OR
2) Create a new pilot.

it crashes exactly after the fade to white!

Well your VPs are not corrupt so.....
Even I am going to sleep. :D
But did you try creating a new pilot.

why don't **** work?

You need to start the executable with the -no_glsl commandline switch ("Disable shader support" in the launcher's troubleshooting section).
In addition, be aware that the GPU you are using is just barely meeting minimum performance requirements for Blue Planet.
-
first mission: works. first real like where you control your ship: only until the end, then it crashes. :banghead:
excuse me, fs2_open.log file is 23 mb big, how the **** do i post that?
something about texturing disabled for texture RT_512x512+24 and that goes on for about 23 mbs..
-
Compressing it with zip or rar or whatever is actually a very viable option in this situation.
-
If you have WinZip, WinRar, 7-Zip or any other kind of archiving software, you can compress the file. Even Windows have built-in zip-compression if you right-click on the file and select send to --> compressed (zipped) folder. It might go into small enough space to fit into forum attachment. If it doesn't, you can get free SkyDrive, Dropbox, MediaFire or any other service account that lets you upload files.

Why the frak do you frakking get so many frakking errors in your frakking blueplanet. I am frakking tired of your frakking excuses of your frakking crashes. I am frakking going out from this frakking matter. Don't frakking keep frakking hopes from frakking me.
As for your frakking large debug log, I am not frakking sure, but I do frakking remember about a frakking site called as pastebin.com where you can frakking show your frakking debug log.
Also why do you frakking play in frakking window mode. I frakking know that this frak isn't related to your frakking problem but are you frakking tired of frakking fullscreen? :)
-
Less frakking, please. This is not the Diaspora board.
-

Quite true enough. :)
MobileForce: Well I don't have an AMD/ATI graphic card but what about once again reinstalling your latest video drivers.
Also create a file in your Freespace2/data folder called as debug_filter.cfg (note the extension is .cfg). This will create
an even larger debug log and help us in debugging
-
create a debug_filter.cfg?
anyways, here's the 23mb log
here's the log after that.
-
create a debug_filter.cfg?
Yes. Open Notepad, leave it blank and save it as debug_filter.csg (Set the file type to All File types or you will get debug_filter.csg.txt; also you will have to type the extension manually while saving)
BTW, what did you do for the drivers? Did you try reinstalling them?
EDIT: Could you explain you error in more detail? For e.g. how do you trigger the crash, when exactly it crashes, etc.
-

No, it really won't.
Two things to do, MobileForce: 1. Use the "Disable OpenGL Render Targets" troubleshooting option. For some reason, your GPU is failing to create the render targets used to do environmental reflections.
Two, the "crash" at the end of the big log is not a crash, but a warning you can click through (and that release builds would allow you to play past without bothering you).
I have to ask though, is there any way at all for you to get a better graphics card? The one you have is very low-powered, and not at all built for 3D gaming (It's designed to drive multiple screens for business apps, not anything requiring real horsepower).

i am aware of how ****ty my graphics card is- i got this computer from an embassy when they didn't need anymore, i noticed it too. however, it can run league of legends as well as s4 league, trackmania forver, and fs1 and 2 on highest settigns (without fso)
ehhhm
still doesn't work after disabling render targets. OH WELL I REALLY WANTED TO CONTROL A GIANT SPACESHIP BUT **** IT.
i need to be able to find a custom campaign without any shudely dudely crap around it. (no extra mediavps, just vanilla custom camaign.)
one last log, analyse that ****.

Could some SCP guy explain me this. I am not good at computers. Its at the end of the larger debug log.
WARNING: VRAM is at -2435410 instead of zero after flushing!
Also MobileForce when an error pops, if there are three options 'Yes','No' and 'Cancel' , go for 'No'. I know you must be following this way, but what can I do, after all I have an habit of giving suggestions. :D

Seems like the old bug where anything beyond 2 GB of RAM is interpreted as negative RAM to me.

Now next problem: the hud is there, twice. reallly annoying.
thanks for all the help from everybody, one last issue and my game will (hopefully) function 100% normal! THANKS!

Er, don't get angry. :nervous:
The Blue Planet team worked pretty hard for this release inspite of their common life problems. They tried everything to make it perfect and will try in future too. Same thing with other mods and mediavps. Also they will see this low-end hardware matter for their next release so don't get disappointed.
-
We're trying very hard to make the game playable on most hardware. MobileForce, yours, sadly, is below par, and there is only so much we can or want to do to target that kind of stuff. We're generally assuming that players of our mod will be able to field at least a mid-range desktop or Laptop with graphics hardware made in the past 3 years or so.
This means that there's a group of people that can't play this mod, no matter what we do. Sorry about that.
-
Now next problem: the hud is there, twice. reallly annoying.
The HUD doubling happens because of an error in the BP2 HUD table. See this post (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=84868.msg1695346#msg1695346) for instructions on how to fix it (ignore the "first" and "third" parts).
-
Well the simplest solution was to play AoA campaign by selecting blueplanet1 as the current mod. But this solution would have only worked for AoA. :p

sorry to bother you then :(
i'm just saying you can optimise just about anything, league of legends even works on my old 2006 laptop.
-
LoL was an entirely developed for a purpose studio created application. It can target just about anything it wants to under windows using API features.
FreeSpace Open, by conjunction, is a group of hobby (based on available time, not necessarily skill set) coders that are refactoring a previously generated engine that itself it an upgrade of a much older engine. The difference of scope and available capability makes this much more difficult to address than "just optimize it".
FSO, as an executable, will still operate on many machines, including machines that Original FreeSpace 2 will run on (assuming Windows 98 and a proper build environment). So that isn't a problem.
The problem comes from balancing that capability of performance vs. the assets and materials it has to work with. In this case, it's not the engine that your system is having a problem with, it is the amount of stress caused by the assets that have a minimum requirement to them that your machine barely manages to make.
If somebody introduced a mod-pack to LoL that doubled texture resolution sizes and introduced higher detail-ordered polygon models, you'd be in the same boat there too, and there is only so much one can do in terms of the CONTENT that will make it available to specific targets.

Well thing is that you can actually decrease texture resolution in LoL, even if there is a large- texture mod-pack
i guess it's possible to just decrease texture resolution?
-
The F2 ingame settings say hi.
-
BP is as optimized as we want it to be. Understand this: We are under no obligation whatsoever to make a game that runs everywhere. Sure, we'd like to reach an audience that is as big as it can be, but at the same time, our vision for BP (Which includes some rather spectacular graphics) has to take precedence in the absence of monetary concerns. The "Official FSO build + compatibility pack" version is the lowest-end version we can support. Hell, in the release thread, we're specifically warning people off who're using Intel hardware, because we know that those do not have the horsepower to provide a good experience.
You are in that same boat.
BP's art assets were made with current mid-range gaming PCs in mind. We have no desire to compromise our visual fidelity any further, and will not provide or support a low-end version of the mod. You can try to reduce the number of effects in use, you can disable all the additional forms of texturing we use (glow, specular, environment, normal) via the Launcher's graphics section, and you can use the ingame options to further reduce the maximum texture resolution used by the game, but that will make the game almost unplayably ugly.

MatththeGeek, I am somehow getting reminded of your legacy. :D (hint, check in your sig.)

Honestly, in the year 2013, if you're a self-professed "gamer," there isn't any particular good reason why you should be relying on integrated graphics. You can presumably pay no more than $50 for a discrete card that can more than handle almost anything that FS2 can dish out.
