Something something EAD...Tereus? It was even vertical, too.
-
Eh? The Tereus is (vertically) symmetrical...

Crap. I wasn't sure. Lindos! That's it.

You guys are funny when you're bull****ting.
You could at least try with its father ship which actually was asymmetrical, the Orion.
-
I was wondering if someone was going to bring up the big brick. :p My con though, is that the Orion is horrible. The Vaygr ships have an aesthetic to them, the Ori is just... a giant purple space bprick.

Huh? Do people actually like the design of the Orion? :nervous:
-
It's the Standard Human Spaceship (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StandardHumanSpaceship?from=Main.ISOStandardHumanSpaceship).
And yes. The Orion is an amazing ship in the grand tradition of the Sulaco and other big ugly box ships. All function, no thrills. Just straight up built for getting into ur base and murder ur doodz.
-
I do not dislike the ship. In fact, I like it's functionality aspect. But it just looks so out of place to me amongst all the other ships.
I looked up the Sulaco, and I like it's design a lot. I don't think it looks ugly, I think it looks intimidating.

This is an unfortunate result of there not being a really strong design aesthetic for terran ships (At least compared to Vasudan or Shivan ships).

The Orion is awesome and all who dislike it are no true
Scotsmen Freespace fans.

Darn Freespace fans! They ruined Freespace! :P

Calm down, mate. The Orion is ugly in my opinion because it has little effort put into it. It does not have any notable aesthetic features, nor does it look "utilitarian." Something utilitarian would look much closer to something an organization like NASA would engineer (at least to me). Not a Gigaporphutoúvlo.
This is getting off-topic, how about a split?
-
The Orion is awesome because, not only is it asymmetrical, and while it is a brick, it doesn't look like it has forced asymmetry like every EVE ship (good **** they're awful), it looks modular, it looks tough and solid - like THE battleship. It looks tough, it looks functional, and it's more than just a giant brick. And no, it has quite a bit of work put into it. It has raised plates where it works with the shape, and the shape isn't as simple and uninspired as you suggest, it's actually a well thought out ship.
It's too ****ing blue though
also, reported An4ximandros for bad taste
-
We talkin' about retail here? or 1st(?) gen VP? EDIT: Because (And i just checked ingame) the Retail Orion looks interesting texture wise. The VP one abuses the living **** out of tiling the originally limited "armor" texture. That said, I still stand that it is not utilitarian, in my opinion.
Also, reported Hades for abuse of the Report function.

can we go bak 2 HW pliz
-
Yeah, the current MVP Orion is bad about being a mess of boxes all over the place and having fairly bad usage of the tiles, the original Orion actually had some fairly good use of the maps and had good lines (which the current one mucks up)
-
I like the Orion is a human built box warship which stands out enough to be the distinctive rare sight they were supposed to be in the T-V / GW era, visually i prefer the fenris/lev hull but the Orion did what it was supposed to and looks good doing so.
also remember when talking about FS1 designed ships we are talking about assets 15 years old in a game that could run on 2D cards so they had some pretty heavy limitations on how complicated and how well textured the models could be.
