Title: OT: Starcraft
Post by: Petrarch of the VBB on July 03, 2002, 01:10:48 pm
Is there a site where I can get a starcraft demo. Loads of guys at school have been on about it, and I beleive it has a HUGE following and fanbase, but I've never played it.

BTW HardWar rules!

Should be able to get it from the Blizzard site...
Yeah..

Speaking of Starcraft.. I've been playing a lot of that recently..
Who else here has it and would be willing to play some games?
[edit] Brood War would be even better

Aww, but that's half the fun of the game. You turtle your Protoss base with 4 layers of Photon Cannons as well as an outer layer of Reavers to prevent nukage and then you secretly build a carrier fleet to nail the people you're backstabbing!

or you park a bunch of Ghosts around his command center and say its for "defense" then nuke the sucker....

I'll play(as said on ICQ) but I totally suck balls at this game...

I'll need a big x-pert teammate  I can defend myself well but I suck major nuts at offense

Just reinstalled it last night after Thorn mentioned it over ICQ.

Well haven't you noticed everyone that plays on B.net are full of themselves... I swear, they make models of themselves and bow down and pray to themselves...they nuts!

Uhhh, and they say "wow I rock, I got 99 wins and 1 loss" what they don't add is they won because they backstabbed or played in newb games

...or played TvB with 6 computer allies and one computer enemy
The worst scum besides backstabbers are disconnectors. You blow up their Carrier fleet, narrowly avoiding destruction, and start to build your defenses back up and restart your efforts to get an offensive force to go up against their 200+ photon cannons, when all of a sudden they disconnect and you have to wait...and wait....and wait....

I used to play on b.net (my record's about 120-40 for the latest clan account I use), but I don't really play much on b.net anymore because of all the backstabbers, newbies, and the maps most people play on b.net are money maps (ie BGH, fastest map ever, team base thingies), or they play 7ppl vs 1 comp which are quite sad. So I joined an Australian community server (~100-300 people play there at any one time, and where my record is ~60-40) where most people play hunters and lt (yes people, if you are any good at starcraft, go play lost temple... it actually requires micro skills!). And since everyone on that server is Australian, you can actually talk to people! No backstabbers, less lag...:D :D :D

I admit that I'm not very good at the game - I always try to get into a game against bots rather than people - and I haven't played too often, but I've found Starcraft to be great fun, and BW even more so. I wouddn't mind trying to fit a few more games in sometime.

bah bots are boring, they send predictable attacks, they dont help their allies, and they dont coordinate with each other.

Starcraft: Brood War - all time greatest game ever.

They do with the 1.09 patch..
And their attacks may be predictable, but theyre nuts... the bastards cheat..

Thing is, playing against newbies is stupid.  I never do it.  On Brood War, my record is like 264-212-9, normal SC 68-12-2... I really ONLY play lost temple, because it is so well balanced and a very fun map to play.  Also, I've played against a few ladder peoples, I beat about four, lost to one of them...;)

But cheating is the only way most AI in various games can actually be a challenge...

computers are awesome on non-money maps... like lost temple.

SD-Money and other money maps they're good, but it's easier to beat them... i've beaten 7 computers before on 'random' many times...

Terrans suck though, because their siege tanks are built fast, about 5 minutes into the game, and they pwn photons and sunkens...

your partially right. The melee AI script is actually the most complex of AI scripts. According to Blizzard, and my personal experience, the AI subscript of the melee script actually looks at the record of the users playing (for single player - it looks at the internal record of the player, including campaign progress). It then executes one of four scripts, determined both based on record, and with a hint of randomness: Easy, Medium, Difficult, Insane. Easy, medium, and difficult attack waves can be found on Blizzard.com, however, Insane is something else.

If your unlucky enough to get an Insane AI bot, then yes, they do 'cheat'. They have decreased build times, and decreased costs. They even start with more money then you. They use stratigic attacks like drops, and attacking weak points in your bases. As Blizzard puts it, "They are aggressive, and do not want the player to win at any cost. They will attack you no matter what you do, there is no trigger that will set them off".

Now this last thing is just purely from experience, but I think at odd times, a unit or building owned by an Insane AI comp, will quickly flash invincable and then back to vunerable, quick enough that the attacking units will change targets to something with more health.

are you talking about Broodwar or Starcraft, or do they both have the same script?

Cause i don't play Broodwar, but all the times i've played Starcraft, i've never seen them THAT good! :)
Title: OT: Starcraft
Post by: Stealth on July 05, 2002, 01:35:07 am
actually something i've always noticed... (and i've tested this)... AI on Terran builds marines first... then siege tanks... if you're playing a big map you can't stop them building siege tanks, but put up a little 'challenge' near their base, like 10 siege tanks :) lol

they'll keep sending marines, as long as they've got something in their 'way' then they don't expand... they just keep sending whatever units they have available... for example, they won't build a bigger building or unit... if you konw what i'm saying...

Starcraft's an awesome game :)

unfortunately i broke my CD a few weeks ago, and never thought to make a backup, but in a week or two i'll get another one, and if anyone would even like to consider challenging me, please let me know... cause i'd pwn you up and down :D

"I die for Aiur"

Oooo, i so wanna play starcraft now.  Infact, i think i will.  I had SC and BW back in '99, and i playyed it online a bit, but i didnt have free internet at the time.  But now i do, and i got an ISDN, i wonder does anyone still play?
I hate people who just build carrier fleets, thats just (in want of a better word) gay.
I also dislike money maps, that defites the point of having resources to fight for.

Starcraft was, and still is, my favourite all time game, with Freespace 2, Transport Tycoon, and Frontier Ellite contestiong for second.

Has anyone made any starcraft ships into freespace models?

Oh, and seige tank + bunker and marines = 0wntage :headz:

Stealing it off your site!?  Fine, perhaps you did have that on your site, but I don't ever recall you copyrighting it!!! I mean geez!!! That thing's all over the net, just cause i see it on your site, like it, then upload it to mine, what's the problem with that?

Why the hell would i want to have your MODS and downloads on my site?  One friggin' file that doens't even BELONG to you, and you go off, what a fag.

Oh, and "i am not officially kicking you off my staff"... when was i ever on the staff... this guy has real problems, cause i never recall being on whatever staff he's on.

EDIT:
To "forcefully" remove anything from my site?  AHAHAHAHAHAHA
i think it's funny that i'd want your ship MODs and your "1337" program and all of the other 3 downloads you have on your "downloads" page... geez!
Most of the links don't even work you realize!

oh, and admins:
This is the only thing I "ripped off his site"... and even though it doesn't even belong to him, just for the sake of peace i'll remove it, because *****-face here has already kicked me off the staff...

HLvsSC.zip has been removed...

anyone who wants to listen to that file, please ask vadar_1, because just because he hosts one of the millions that are floating around the net on his site, he claims rights to it obviously...

Oh, and ask him for his long URL, because he doesn't like to host on HLP because they don't support PHP scripts...  funny, i thought they did though!

oh vadar_1, please never contact me again on ICQ...i want no part of some campaign that you made up, especially one with a crappy intro!

peace out!
~Stealth~

EDIT:
Anyone desperate enough to go to vadar's page to check out that download, his download page can be found here:

http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/hosted/fullcircle/ci.php?id=3

unfortunately out of the many downloads he has (all four of them) only 2 of them work... pretty stupid huh?  the most important one, the one that is actually "on topic", one that's actually to do with his campaign, doesn't work... oh well.

nice design, eh?  i made it myself... he tells me to "creatively" make a page, but after 2 or 3 attempts, i gave up... after all, how "creative" can you get on a downloads page with only 4 downloads...
once again... pretty gay, huh?

Enough.

One or both of you are in deep ****. The level of childish behaviour here is quite incredible. I am not amused.

Thread closed untill further notice. Petrarch if you'd like it opened again I'll remove the offending section and we can get back to normal. In the meantime I'm awaiting vader_1s reply on the matter before saying more. I say again that I am really not amused.
