Basically NASA thinks we are due for a flip of the sun's magnetic field in the next 3-4 months, an event that happens roughly every 11 years and is associated with a marked increase in solar flare activity

Good thing I don't listen to radio then, it's usually somewhat noisy during those events. Will just have to stick to CDs/casettes (yes, we still use them. All the best stuff is either on them, or on vinyl) in the car. I don't expect this to be much of a concern to anyone not on the ISS. Maybe to my father, who drives a Dodge Stratus with an American radio, which is impossible to precisely tune to European stations, making it particularly susceptible to noise/weak signal problems. :)

I've got horror scenarios that the Earth could could be EMPd back to the stone age or sterilised by a solar flare in my head. Is there any truth in that?
-
No.

Oh, wait until I tell that ex of mine who's a novice astronomer. She's going to... lose it.

The joke is, it sounded like I was going to say "She's going to flip" and leave a terrible pun in everyone's mind.

I do not seem to be doing well with you and your jokes!

They've already filmed it.

You're more likely to be attacked by a rabid chihuahua than our planet being fried by an EMP flare.

Well yeah. There's billions of chihuahuas and they're all rabid!
