Title: OpenAL download site down (permanently?)
Post by: jg18 on August 12, 2013, 02:45:14 pm
It looks like the Creative OpenAL download site is down, possibly permanently, since it doesn't even come up in a Google search (https://www.google.com/search?q=openal+creative+download). I can't look into this more at the moment, so what other options exist?

Thanks.

if anyone has a copy of the download it could always be hosted on FSmods at least for now

Here you can download, the OpeanAL installer 32-64 Bits and the " openal-soft-1.15.1-bin" as well.

Interesting. Well, one more reason to support OpenAL Soft instead.

It's better than Creative's outdated POS too.

OpenAL Soft is a drop-in replacement for Creative OAL, or does FSO need to be made compatible with it?

Drop in replacement, FSO on Linux & OSX already use it exclusively :)

Now, if we can only manage to statically link in OpenAL on Windows as well.....  :D

Actually, OS X uses Apple's OpenAL library, which ships with OS X. Dunno if it's completely theirs or based on OpenAL Soft or something else, though.

:blah:  sorry about the misinformation  :(  (I *am* sure about Linux though, it's OpenAL Soft on every distro I've looked at)

Drop-in replacement.

http://kcat.strangesoft.net/openal.html
--> openal-soft-1.15.1-bin.zip
From the zip, extract Win32\soft_oal.dll to your FS2 directory and rename it to OpenAL32.dll.

To my surprise it even fixed blue-screening problem on one guy's X-Fi card.

Seriously, I don't know why SCP still insists on recommending Creative's OpenAL when OpenAL Soft could even be statically linked to the FSO executables. And if there is really need to, add a flag to disable the built-in OpenAL Soft to use external dll from Creative's or whatever.

My mirror has been down for a while since I never bothered to reconfigure FTP after moving to a new server...  Is fixed now.

I have a question.

My brother's OpenAL dates back to 2008.  He now has a Win 7 64bit system as well.   Should he download a newer version?  Also, which file do I download from Kopaschris's mirror?
