Title: V's next game
Post by: rubixcube on August 30, 2013, 04:31:15 pm
Assuming  :v: is finished with the Saints Row series, where do you suppose they will go next? Another FPS, maybe another space sim, or something entirely different.

Saints Row 5: Attack of the Vasudans. :P

EDIT: We know the Red Faction and Freespace universes are linked. The Subach Corporation was in Red Faction Guerrilla. Or it could be just an in joke. Actually, that's more likely.

i mean it's not like we can conclusively rule out the GTA being the evolution of the Saints, is it?

:v: is known for easter eggs as a general.

as for their next game, i would love to see a new space game but between market impressions and the dominance of Star Citizen i think it will be awhile before any of the established player delve into the genre

the studio currently has a lot of experience in 3rd person game development so probably something based on that experience with a new sci-fi setting would be cool

I wouldn't mind another Red Faction game.

Technically, THQ killed it. There's no saying that Deep Silver couldn't resuscitate it. (Unless the remnants of THQ hold the IP rights and they didn't transfer with :v:)

That's actually worth looking into. Where do the RF rights reside?

No-one's brought up the idea of another Descent game.

I'm thinking they're just going to do something new; most of their old work is now in some IP limbo or other from all the times they've changed hands.

Did Volition ever have the rights to the Descent franchise?

I could be very wrong but that went with Parallax iirc

OK, so apparently Nordic Games purchased the Red Faction IP (http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/08/26/nordic-games-another-darksiders-years-away-red-factions-future-is-uncertain), and will most likely choose a developer to sell it to (hopefully :v:).

I don't know who owns the IP for the Descent series, but it was last seen with Interplay, and since they now completely own the Freespace IP, it could be assumed that Interplay does retain Descent itself.

Yeah, I think Interplay owns the rights to Descent, they were actually going to get G1M2 to develop a Descent for Wii ware title but I think that died

Man, Descent has been out of my head for so long I pretty much forgot about it.  And ya know, I still haven't ever beaten any of them.  When I was first playing them, I was so young that the concept of saving and continuing a game was lost on me.  I was REALLY damn good at the first 3 or so levels though.  I think I eventually played 3 far enough to get both of the pyro variants.  And I remember some levels where most of the outside environment was purple.  I'm not sure if I legitimately obtained the black shark missile, or if I only ever had it from a cheat code.  I think what mainly stopped my progress in 1 and 2 was the mines just got so damn big and confusing it made playing tedious and I stopped.

I actually wouldn't be terribly excited about a new Descent.

I wasn't terribly pleased with the change in direction from D2 to D3 (it was still a damned good game, mind you), and I would imagine that anything made today would be even further away from the core game than D3 was.

Descent really was a franchise based on the multiplayer experience over LAN / Internet.  The single player portion of the game wasn't anything to write home about.  Though descent 2 made the descent universe more fleshed out and had great cut-scenes, the single player game left a lot to be desired.  The original D1 was really nothing to write home about since it released in the pre-internet environment.  Descent 2 came along with dial up and kali / kahn lan emulators to play over the net.

Descent REALLY could use an update with all the lessons game developers have learned in making cinematic based games. Problem is, vehicular combat has been incorporated into first person shooters/third person shooters like Unreal Tournament, Halo, etc, etc.  We've had 'genre convergence' as first person shooters started incorporating simulating other aspects of the world.  But I'm not confident any game dev team would know what to do with it.  The reality was Descent 3 was a botched job.  The whole flying outside thing screwed up the game and the developers didn't take any care replicating the feel of D1/D2's ship weapons and physics characteritsics.  If I were to do descent today, I'd go over D2 with a fine tooth comb figuring out the exact size/shape of weapons, their characteristics and replicating the feel exactly in some new engine.

I liked what 343 studios did with their update to Halo 1, I think they called it halo anniversary.  It basically allows you to switch between the old game and new game graphics in real time.  I'd love for a developer to do that with say descent 2.  D2 had the beginnings of a cool universe for descent that was never expanded on.  That whole starship at the end could have been flung into something interesting.

Ending cinematic

Today people rather have vehicles as an option and play as a man with a gun/super powers in some pseudo-action movie semi-videogame that they pump out today.  Rather then be forced into a vehicle for the whole game.

What volition has been making after freespace was shooters /w vehicles, either first or third person.

An open world Descent where you tunnel between massive underground chambers using geomod could be pretty cool. Chasing another player through a tunnel that he is creating on the fly sounds fun, especially if you had an instrument that let you see what was in the rock ahead and do stuff like collapse tunnels in on themselves or dig up into lakes of frozen hydrocarbons or whatever. Think Dig Dug meets Tribes Ascend.
