Title: (3.7.0) Strange slowdowns when looking at nebulae
Post by: Grizzly on September 03, 2013, 10:57:50 am
I am currently replaying FS2's campaign, and I have noticed one very strange problem. When my ship is pointed at nebulea, or a planet, the FPS drops from 60 or 70 to 30 or 40 (!). I am using an very old 8400GS graphics card ATM, but it seems to me that these slowdowns should not happen for simple textures like this. The problem occurs regardless whether or not the MVPs are used.
Notably, the problem does not appear to occur with suns.

Currently quite unsure how to properly turn this into a bug report (specifically, how to record this problem), so any help on that front would be appreciated.

Please post your fs2_open.log file.  Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post.

Here it is.

WHen disabling Backgrounds in the FS2 options menu (not the launcher, the ingame one) the problem seems to disappear.

Try removing this option from your launcher (it's no longer needed and (while not relevant to you) is known to cause issues on Intel video cards)

Code: [Select]
  -mipmap

The issue occurs regardless of that option (I checked it only to see if it would resolve the issue)

Also, I don't have an Intell. I suppose I should tell my system sepcs:
AMD athlon X2 6000+
Geforce 8400 GS
2 GB ddr 2 ram

Sounds strangely familiar.
Are you sure it's happening only when looking at nebulae and not when a head-ani is playing?
