how do i get the Meson Bomb to detonate in my Fred Level??
(p.s. what is a SEXP? yes i am a slight newbie.)

You detonate Meson bombs by getting them to self destruct or by setting the hull to 0. Both of these are done using SEXPs.
If you want to learn how to FRED. I strongly advise you go to the help menu in FRED and look at the documentation. The FREDdocs contain a couple of walkthroughs which you should actually do (rather than simply reading them). You'll find that doing them will solve a large percentage of the questions you would later ask if you only read it so it's well worth your time.

If I'm not mistaken, you have to "create" the explotion yourself.
Use explosion-effect sexp for that, and make the Meson bomb self-destruct at the same time.

The Meson Bomb though requires a little tweaking to not look dumb
The Bomb does an insane amount of damage and as part of the way the game works, the more "death damage" a ship does, the longer it takes to actually blow up. So the Meson Bomb can take a long time to go from dying to actual explosion. Even Volition saw this was a bit of a problem in their missions. If you look in "A Flaming Sword" (sm2-10.fs2), you'll see they're using the special explosion options to reduce the damage of a dying Meson Bomb from 50,000 to just 5,000. (You could also use the custom deathroll time in the special explosion options, which is a new SCP feature)
