Title: Combined battlefield 4 and Payday thread.
Post by: Colonol Dekker on October 24, 2013, 11:54:28 am
Two no-brainer multiplayer games I like to wind down to. Does anyone else indulge in a bit of console based sinnery?

I do kinda laugh at the BF4 testimonial ads.  Its a great concept but in execution they got a bland bunch of folks to tell the most uninspired stories.  Where are the tales of high adventure?   Like bailing out an Cobra just before it eats and Alamo, pulling a sidearm and capping the pilot of the Su-27 who shot it then skydiving over and taking control of said Sukhoi before you both meet the ground.  Or using detpacks to launch M1A2s across the map to the enemies' base.

That's the crazy shenanigan **** they should be using, not "I fell in water then a building fell into the water and we found a tank."   :o

Can't comment on Battlefield 4, but Payday 2 is great fun. It certainly hits the sweet spot between Left 4 Dead and the Rainbow Six/SWAT games. We've been having great fun in it so far, despite some rough edges here and there (Like, what the hell is up with the economy in the game? 42k for a pistol suppressor? Really?).

The BF4 demo is allright I think, if not somewhat buggy. I haven't bought the game yet of course, I hope the R9 290x I am looking to buy come with it so I wait until then.

BF4 plays a lot more like a proper sequel to BF2 then BF3 was.
Except that it had the good infantry combat with BF3.

If there's one gripe I have about the game, it's the absolutely bonkers unlock system. Everything, including skills, costs a ****load of money, and getting weapon accessories is an exercise in frustration as it's all tied to a random card choice at the end of each mission.

Despite this being a full-price game, this system is straight out of the bad F2P school. It's unclear to me how the developers came to the conclusion that this is a good idea.

Addict the player towards the random reward system. Add extra packs out of a micro-transaction store and charge real money for them. Swim in the money you just took out of helpless junkies.

I'm happily racking up my arsenal and skill points. I only really want to get a few masks.

I've had an itch to play some ME3 multi lately. I wonder if there are any players playing these days.

I happily would if I had anything left to unlock aside from ultrarares.

Nothing else to unlock here either, but it's not like I played the game just to unlock ****. It was fun when team wasn't full of morons.

ME3 handled this a lot better by basically following the trading card game model. With all those extra packs available, I have at least a slight measure of control over what I will get.
At the end of each heist in Payday 2, you are presented with three face-down cards, of which you can choose one. These cards can be equipment unlocks, they can be various cosmetic items, it can be an EXP or cash boost. As far as I am concerned, this "choose a card" step is completely unnecessary, since there is no way to make an educated choice (Unlike the booster packs in ME3 multi!).
The second thing that I dislike about this is that these cards only unlock equipment in the store that you can buy later (at hilariously inflated prices). In ME3, when you got a good weapon, you were able to try it out immediately. Here, you will have to grind through one, if not several, heists in order to get the cash to try something new; This is also true for skills.

Basically, Payday 2 uses money as a limited ressource you have to grind a long, long time for in order to do even basic stuff like leveling your character. It's gating the content to a degree only seen in the F2P realm, and it's completely baffling as to why.

EA meets tacky B-movies.

Anyone know someone who's lost an actual limb pursuing this fool's errand?
