Please post your fs2_open.log file.  Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post.

I have not installed fs open yet, as stated.

Just the base FS2 game.

AFAIK retail doesn't work if you have more than 2GB of RAM on your machine due to a bug in the variable type used to hold the amount of RAM detected.  Best to install and use FSO.

Setup sees 0MB of ram.
By "setup" you mean the launcher, right ?

Retail's launcher bugs when you have more than 2GB ram - probably some int or short overflowing and going right into negative values or something. It's a known issue. We're talking about a 99-era game after all.

You should be perfectly able to use one of our recent launchers to play FS2 retail:

wxLauncher (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=67950.0)
Launcher 5.5g (http://swc.fs2downloads.com/files/Launcher55g.zip)

But yeah, while you're at it, better just go ahead and set up FSO (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=78710.0).
