Title: Modelling Help?
Post by: Bryan See on November 03, 2013, 09:27:13 am
I'm just a newcomer and I have my 3 ships still needs HTLing, which means to me is high-poly. I know Blender has since been updated, and most of the information about conversions from POF to Blender and vice verca has been either inaccurate or outdated, especially Blender's own COLLADA importer and exporter in recent versions.

I've used the latest build of my POF Constructor Suite to save them as .DAE formats and imported them in Blender, but what do I do from there? Is there's something I missed about?

What to you mean?
Blender Crash down when you import the COLLADA?
What to you will do with the Models in Blender?
Have you the original Blender Files from your models?

Blender did not crash down when I import any COLLADA. I intend to make it high-poly, accurate and detailed (>60k polys) as those from Esarai, Oddgrim, Aesaar, and fightermedic, in order to not just compete against them, but also include as potential addition to the next MediaVPs release for the FreeSpace Upgrade project (with height maps of course!). In addition, I just want to make hi-poly turrets and other submodels. Included are the blend files. In fact the POF to Blender conversion.

BTW, the blend for the SJ Amritaya from the 2011 Inferno model dump is included because I might be HTLing it specifically for my BSG/FreeSpace crossover mod.

Describe exactly what happens after you import the model.  There should be a gray model in your 3D view afterwards.  If there is, you begin editing the model.

I saved the DAE by using a recent build of POF Constructor Suite, and imported to Blender by not the COLLADA import/export plugin, but rather a module itself, see Doc:2.6/Manual/Data System/Files/Import/COLLADA (http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Data_System/Files/Import/COLLADA). Although I began editing it, I didn't see a gray model, but rather a white model.

I don't get it. Is there any other way to get dae into Blender than File -> Export -> DAE? If there is any, is this really needed? Importing dae via import/export is the easiest way. You should see raw, white-gray model without textures.

Using the latest version of Blender (2.69) and POF, I don't have any issues importing/exporting DAEs to/from either program.

Yeah that sounds like everything is working as intended.  If you're expecting to see textures, you will have to make sure that all the image files are placed in the same folder as the dae file you are loading, otherwise it will not load the UVs.

Thanks, esarai. Probably the POF to Blender (and vice versa) in the FreeSpace Wiki may be outdated in some parts.
