Thunder just had his 18th birthday. And that had me wondering: How old are we?

Ask your "WE"
-
I'm 17
-
This "we" implies an oppressive collectiveness.

Actually thats not how old you are now. You'll have to keep telling us your age if your gonna narrow it down so much.

Prove it. Prove it without using quantum theory.

All the atoms I'm composed of have always existed, or at least as long as the universe. First Law of Thermodynamics or summat.

Ah yes, but can ones being be defined merely by it's parts, or is it the very process of interaction between the components which gives us our being?
-
Is a rock still a rock when you cut it in half? Nothing is new about my body, and, if we are to believe a theory I happen to despise utterly and yet reluctantly admit as possible, none of my thoughts are new, either.

23 this year *checks forum calendar*... yep 23 (http://w1.520.telia.com/~u52019065/smiley/buttrock.gif)

*looks at his Oklahoma and Washington ID's*
Damn, born in 8/26/78.
So I'll be 24 this year.
*looks at his california ID*
According to them, I was born in 8/28/76.
Stupid people can't read over there.
And what's sad? They had it right on the little black and white temporary ID, and still screwed up the final one!
(Told me they'd send me a new one, dad still hasn't seen anything in the mail.)
-
According to my drivers license I'm 15.
-
Actually thats not how old you are now. You'll have to keep telling us your age if your gonna narrow it down so much.
Yeah, it has increased since I posted that, but hey at least it's better than only having one or two decimal places. :p
I happened to have a little bit of free time a few months ago and made a little Mathematica program that calculates the time between two dates in seconds, so I just use that whenever one of these age threads comes up. :D
-
I is 14 right now, and will be 15 on the 26th of July
-
15, and I drive around in an F50(I wish ) ^^;;
-
12.423 , now whos the youngest?:D
-
Ah- got you there, too- I am also less than a second old, as at every instant the human body (as with most things) changes imperceptibly, and only the me in the instantaneous present is, strictly speaking, the true "me".:D
-
by that count, we are all the same age.
-

Why? Everything doesn't happen at the same time...
-
sience all the time , we cahnge then we (acording to stryke) are constantly born.
-
Blah... Stryke... :D
But if you'd be reborn every second, we still wouldn't be exactly "as old" as others around here. But almost... :)
-
Actually, yeah, we then would be equally old, since all the matter/energy in the universe is thought to be of the same age. :D
-

But all the atoms aren't of the same age...

Your DNA doesnt change, ah sussed!:ha:
-
So? I move, my chemical composition changes (digestion, respiration, et al.) I'm never precisely the same person from one instant to the next. Thus, the person I am currently is less than an instant old.:D

 You mean.... you were born one day before I was??
Hmm... Washington ID, eh? You weren't born in Washington State by any chance, were you? :D

Thought... :p
But all the atoms aren't of the same age...
Well it couldn't really be otherwise going by the law of energy conservation; the atoms are of different ages but the quarks and leptons would be equal. :p
-
I'm 16 currently, 17 in september. We should have had a poll for this with age ranges to choose.
-
You f00lz talking quantum shmack about the human body recreating itself every instant of Planck time are getting annoying.
It's starting to read like something from "Thief of Time," one of the latest in the Discworld series. Y'all sound too much like Wen the Eternally Surprised...
As of sometime 6 months ago, I am 18.
And this makes how many times we've seen this topic in one form or another spring up here?

Seems like 300....
-
Nope, was born in Atlanta, Ga.
Spent 3 months there, moved to florida for 2 years, then to oklahoma till I turned 18, then Navy, then back to OK, then to CA, back to OK (dad, I have issues with now...) Then up to wa.
Around the world in 24 years...
-
woo, I'm 13, youngest so far? :D (although there are some other 13s on HLP...)
-
nope i'm 12.

...2o...20...2O!

what? Age? Age is irrelevant. It is the person inside that matters.:p

As well as changed our desktops.... :D
-
Age is at least more interesting to know than what desktop does everyone have... I answer to neither of them. :ha:
-

DON'T tempt me.
-
...And come to think of it, are we ever really even of ONE age? I mean, if you go on the molecular scale, yeah, different things are forming and breaking down all the time. Which molecule is us? Or is it all of them, and thus we end up being scattered across much of the planet?
-
Yeah, there is no clear way to define the concept of an individual over long periods of time. The concept of "I" has no absolute meaning really.
-
THe shorter the word, the more difficult the definition.:D

True - just look at pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. :D

A respiratory disease caused by inhaling fine particles strewn into the air by a volcano?
How'd we get onto this subject?
-
How else?

Pronunciation: (nOO'mu-nO-ul"tru-mI"kru-skop"ik-sil'i-kO"vol-kA"nO-kO"nE-O'sis, nyOO'-),

an obscure term ostensibly referring to a lung disease caused by silica dust, sometimes cited as one of the longest words in the English language.
-
Nanosoft president, wich is my alter-ego, should be 47 by now...
My actual body is 20...
-
I knew that the longest words in the English language would have to be some biology or medical term; they are good at making up nice-sounding words. :D

Eh, I remember it from watching a science show way back when i was in high school... (AHH! Class of '96! Yay! Now I feel old!)
anyone else remember Beakman's world?

'97 here, but because I stayed back a year to learn Hebrew when I first came here. :D
Yeah, Beakman's World - definetly rings a bell, although I'm sure I would remember it better had I actually had a TV for the past 13 years. :D

Forsooth, 'tis an unmitigatedly and incontrovertibly delectable sensation to enunciate such marvellously polysyllabaic expressions as pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. Philological dilitenttes and sundry enthusiasts of subtle irony may partake of delicious etymological drollery by following my signatory hypertext link. :D
-
You've taken all the time since your last post to think that one up, haven't you?
-
I daresay not, my slightly sardonic acquaintance. Linguistic expression is indubitably one of the most entertaining of playthings.
