Title: purposal for a p3d. HLP directory
Post by: whitearrow on November 15, 2013, 10:04:45 am
Since p3d.in has become a very popular tool for our community, I think it would be useful to create a permanent thread or something similar to the wiki ship's database, where everyone who wants to share his projects can post a link to them. In this way we could easily access all shared models, without struggling to find the thread, and the page in it, where the specific link is stored, especially when it's a several months old thread or when you don't remember the ship's own name...

EDIT: IMPORTANT
Guys, now I'm the new maintainer of p3d.in pages directory on wiki. (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/HLP_modellers%27_p3d_pages_directory (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/HLP_modellers%27_p3d_pages_directory))
If someone would like his page to be added to the list, post the link here or PM me. I confirm the policy set previously by The Dagger, not to include links to specific models in case that the user's gallery is not public: only links public galleries will be mentioned in the list! So make sure you have changed your p3d privacy settings (it's the menu marked with a "Z" in the left column) from "unlisted" to "public" in one model of yours at least.

Certainly the wiki page for user made ships (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/User-made_Ships) would benefit from the inclusion of p3d where available, in addition to your excellent idea for a p3d gallery.

I had had the same idea, but the wiki user-made ships directory is for completed models. My purposal is to create a directory sorted by modellers, who can show their projects. In fact, as far as I've seen, most of the models posted on p3d.in by our community users are work-in-progress, still without textures in many cases.

Something like this:

Esarai's p3d account: [link]
Oddgrim p3d account: [link]
etc.

This may be useful for comparing different modellers' styles and learn solutions that they implemented... We've already got a ships' directory (in the wiki), but we lack a modellers' one...

Actually, there are plenty of completed assets in p3d. Since most people use their HLP username for their p3d account, it's quite easy to make a list. Here's the list AFAIK*:

Aesaar (http://p3d.in/u/Aesaar)
AndrewOfDoom (http://p3d.in/u/AndrewofDoom)
Axem (http://p3d.in/u/Axem)
BlackWolf (http://p3d.in/u/BlackWolf)
DahBlount (http://p3d.in/u/DahBlount)
Esarai (http://p3d.in/u/Esarai)
Hades (http://p3d.in/u/Haids)
Headdie (http://p3d.in/u/headdie)
Majorvader111 (http://p3d.in/u/vader111)
MjnMixael (http://p3d.in/u/MjnMixael)
Scooby_Doo (http://p3d.in/u/Skaarj)
Shivan Hunter (http://p3d.in/u/ShivanHunter)
Oddgrim (http://p3d.in/u/Oddgrim)
The Dagger (http://p3d.in/u/AngryDagger)**

* There are people who don't have public models, but have provided links for particular models. I have not included them.
** Yeah, I list myself in third person, so?

Hmm...you can search for a modeler's name in wiki to see their work since most of the models are credited.

I don't know, the user-made ship list includes only released assets, so you can download it and see it ingame directly (which is better than p3d).

EDIT: Updated the list

You can add me to the list too since I found out how neat it is.

looks like you have everything set to private scooby.

with the model open its the third option down on the left hand side.  all models upload in private which means they can only be viewed if you publish the link.  public means that when anyone browses your main page they can see the model

p3d certainly is faster than DLing the ship and setting up a test mod folder. Especially when the provided DL doesn't include tables and stuff.

That's a good point. However, due to the quantity of ships in the wiki, we would probably need more than a free account to load all models. That said, nothing stops us from puting a link in the wiki to the corresponding p3d for ships that already have it. I'll do it this weekend if nobody beats me to it.

DahBlount, you have nothing visible in your P3d - make sure you have at least one model set to public.

Thanks for letting me know. I had my model unlisted and forgot to make it public. More coming soon.

Perfect, may I suggest adding an entry in the ships' database, name it something like "HLP modellers' p3d pages directory" and simply copy/paste the above list in there?

Thank you Dagger! Here is account: http://p3d.in/u/whitearrow (http://p3d.in/u/whitearrow)

Since I'm the one who purposed this, I volunteer to keep that page up-to-date, but I need the priviledges to modify the wiki... Who should I ask?

Most of my stuff is on AndrewofDoom's p3d (since he textured them). That, and I don't know how to get textures onto p3d properly.

That's great. For wiki access, either ask in the wiki forum or ask Goober via PM.

Ok, I've got the access to the wiki now. The Dagger, I relieve you from duty... ;D

Thanks whitearrow, but don't let that wiki get in the way of your modelling.  :)
