Title: Upcoming models now with P3D!
Post by: Scooby_Doo on November 19, 2013, 12:43:25 am
This is replacing the old Upcoming Models (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=52678.0)  It's getting long (52 pages) and old (started in 08).  Plus I just found out about P3D, wish it would work with Opera 12.  What you find here will eventually get put into the Released thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=73516.0)

Straits, which needs a better name.

kind of looks like a demon fighter lite so perhaps naming it something like Imp

So far I've gotten Ifrit, Imp and Striker.  Striker sounds more like an attack fighter name rather than light fighter.  I do like Imp... small mischievous creatures.

TCF Imp, still needs to be lodded and imported but mostly done

Pretty. :) What are you planning next? The list wasn't very helpful this time, you made a lot of new ships which are simply not there. :)

Next up, the Super Hornet, from I think the 3DO Super Wing commander.  I'm already starting to add additional features to the model.  The original was so flat and boring.

How about making a "classic" Hornet, too? That's the last fighter you're missing from a full WC1 lineup.

I've looked more closely and noticed you're using Particle Cannons on it. Could you swap them to lasers? Hornet with Particles just doesn't seem right. Unless, of course, that was the SWC loadout.

I gave it a third on the underside to give it a bit more umph. Switching it to lasers shouldn't be a problem.

Nice, but don't you think you think you could fit at least three launcher ports on those frontal surfaces? Currently you seem to have one.
Title: Re: Upcoming models now with P3D!

You mean missile banks?  There's two large torp ones (one on each side) and 4 regular ones (2 on each side)

I've seen that. It's just that the "light" ports don't look like your usual missile ports.
Title: Re: Upcoming models now with P3D!
Post by: Scooby_Doo on December 03, 2013, 11:54:48 pm
Oh I see what your getting at.  It's not the light/missile launchers thats the problem it's the big torpedo launcher.  Apparently I used a cruise missile!!!! launcher.  The torp launcher is just a bigger version of the missile one.  Let me fix that now

Well, some of your other ships (Ballista and Hwacha) also use this model. :) Though it looks good on them, especially on Hwacha.

Quite original. It's really well armed, with 4 Plasma Turrets it has as many big guns as an Essex! It's quite a battlecruiser.

That thing looks nasty. How big is it compared to the old tallie?

That thing looks nasty. How big is it compared to the old tallie?

Approximately 1.45 times the size (Saga's tallie is ~540m and this is ~780m).  It's still smaller than the carriers (it is bigger than the Yorktown).

Quite original. It's really well armed, with 4 Plasma Turrets it has as many big guns as an Essex! It's quite a battlecruiser.
It's suppose to be the top-tier heavy cruiser.  It's shorter than the Essex, but more bulky.

Post by: Dragon on December 21, 2013, 02:30:55 pm
Looks like a nice, frontal firepower-centric alternative to Essex Battlecruiser. I'm still hoping for an actual battleship with 6-8 Plasma Cannons. :) Ideally, there would be both a "standard" battleship and a superdreadnought like the Hvar'kaan. Are you planning anything like that, Scooby?
Title: Re: Upcoming models now with P3D!

The Warlock will be a battleship/dreadnaught class
Title: Re: Upcoming models now with P3D!
Post by: Dragon on December 21, 2013, 04:59:04 pm
Yeah, though from what I've seen of it, it doesn't quite have this "WWII in Space" vibe. Not to mention from what you said, it'd be that Hvar'kaan equivalent. Do you think you could make something like "Gettysburg Mk.II", with flat, slightly sloped deck and 6 Plasma turrets neatly lined up along it's top and bottom deck?

They're fighters, so I think they wouldn't take long to take. I'd especially like to see what you can do for the 'bolt. :)
Oh, and on page 5 of the release thread you posted a ship list. If you keep forgetting what's next, you can check it (that's what I do :) ).

I looked forward for your Waterloo and the Tonga :) Maybe the Exeter and Wake class too? And your Kilrathi ships from the WC1+2 timeline. Confed ships are nearly done if I remember your old posts of coming ships right

Scooby did already a original Bengal for my Campaign:

@Scooby Looks nice. You take a few parts of the other Bengal, the engines from the Confederation and the Jutland 2 Tower. Good mix of all :)

Looks a bit larger and the other Bengal is already about 1200m - 1500m or longer?

Definitely bigger than the original Bengal.  I don't have too many pocket carriers anymore, just the Liberty.

I looked at the model and wondered how you were hitting 150k triangles and then I looked in the hangarbay. I think the roof grating detail needs to go, that's easily normal-mapped and it's not something that'll be seen well in 95% of gameplay, in my opinion. It also means you can do a bit more with the hull itself, the bit of the ship the player will almost always be able to see.
Title: Re: Upcoming models now with P3D!
Post by: Dragon on April 17, 2014, 05:46:14 am
I don't think changes are needed. 150k is fine, polygons are not what kills FSO. You could gain a lot more performance by making it not use 7-8 large textures, like Scooby is prone to doing. The general rule is, the less textures, the better. IIRC, it's even better to use a 4096^2 than 4 2048^2 textures when it comes to FSO performance, I believe it was once tested somewhere.
Title: Re: Upcoming models now with P3D!
Post by: Scooby_Doo on April 18, 2014, 09:54:20 pm
A ton of detail goes away at LOD 0, that cuts the polycount down quite a bit.

Anyways the whole hanger has been replaced.  There was a bug here a bug there, better to start from scratch.  Now with a fly through hanger instead.

Edit: Also my video card can't handle 4096 res textures.  If I ever get to redo the textures for these ships I'm going to double down the uvmap size.  That should cut the texture count down quite a bit.  Also the bathroom tiling doesn't work very nicely with detailed hull.  I really need to find something better.

At least when I around to doing the kilrathi ships, I can make changes.

Post by: Dragon on April 19, 2014, 05:09:39 am
I like the flythrough hangar idea. How about adding some missile launchers and 1-2 plasma turrets? It was always an "assault carrier", meant to operate alone. It makes sense for it to have some armament, and we've already got a "normal" carrier in this size class (the Nimitz).
