Title: Aquitaine Chronicles
Post by: FIZ on November 26, 2013, 07:56:50 pm
Well, one idea I have been toying with is how 'Alpha 1' gets thrown from squadron to squadron.  It leaves a feeling of no history or choice in the main campaign.  I am thinking of porting 'retired' assets over from FSport and writing a back story for these squads that you seem to flip through.  Really want to make some back story for the Suicide Kings (other squadrons later), their transition to the Aquitaine, the retiring of the FS1 ships.

If this has been done before, I wouldn't be surprised.  Interested in using Fury AI with Shivans and playing with canon script.  What I really would like to know is if this has been done before, not trying to reinvent the wheel and seems like an obvious place to start.

I can't recall anyone ever trying this specific sort of campaign.  Give it a shot. :)

The closest thing I can think of is the 158th Banshee Squadron, which was going to be a history of one squadron throughout the FreeSpace saga.  Then again, there was Lightning Marshall, which followed the 87th Space Cowboys and the GTCv Actium.  But those are only two campaigns, and neither is about the squads that Alpha 1 was a member of.

Your campaign is ok, I think. But it reminded me of something different. What would really be funny would be a kind of a trolling campaign, wherein you'd be constantly moved from one squadron to the next within the plot of say, FS2, precisely when the action was coming to the squadron you just left. You'd be wandering around doing patrols that didn't get *any* action whatsoever while listening to the radio the ludicrous events in the war happening everywhere else where you weren't.

Your fly mates would be constantly be pissed by missing the action and would soon start blaming you for too many "coincidences" that you were always in the quiet squadrons at the right time.

It would be hilarious if it wasn't so boring at the same time!

Heh, I'll try for a respectable mini-campaign before I even consider a troll campaign.

What squadron would HLP like to see some backstory to?  Currently focused on Intercept squad, but there is a lot of room for story.

Athena Mk. IIs and a heavy assault squad anyone?

Anyone interested in helping me FRED this?  Newcomers and Vets welcome, lots to play with and creative freedom in abundance if you want.

Damn you Axem  :banghead:, now I most provide leakage:

Spoiler:
Games.  They have us playing games.  As if Operation Falling Sky was just another day.  Comms are on blackout.  It is for the good of the system, forcing them to come together as a community, forging unity by making them rely on themselves.  It's a Terran system, but we play cat and mouse with a Vasudan battle group to test preparedness for the next Lucifer.  Moral is high and we are on defense on home turf.  Games.

Your campaign is OK if you set the story revolving around the 158th Banshee Squadron. I think it is better if you do a character-driven story. When it enters development stage, why don't you include some combat sequences inspired by Ace Combat?

I would use an unknown Squadron.

I dislike quoting every post so I will be direct:

Bryan See:  The 158th is not mine so I feel I have very little (no) creative license to start using them in a campaign.  The 242nd (and other squads from FS2) are established squads that are canon and 'Alpha 1' just kinda floats through.  My aim is to add character and history to those squadrons on the Aquitaine.  I have not decided on the narrative choice, but I think you as the player will speak more through actions than words.  The Ace Combat thing... just not interested due to not being familiar, but if you would like to try some FRED tricks I would be pleased to have the help and if you are interested we can continue this discussion via PM.

Black-Devil:  Using an unknown squadron is at the other end of the spectrum, where I would have to create a back story and home base for, which is not what I want to do.

Obviously, this is still in a very early stage.  I aim to have a 4 mission-mini by spring where you get the ebb-and-flow of what I am going for, but the what I want to do and what motivates me as a creator is to flesh out that Alpha 1 may not have achieved what he did if it wasn't for the other pilots on the Aquitaine.  I think Fury AI provides a great avenue to provide new content and I see here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=86411.0 that there is demand to flesh things out on the FS2 main campaign without breaking canon or reinventing the wheel.

@BD and BS:  Thank you for your interest.  I hope my design style does not completely alienate you, as I do hope to one day have Beta testers :)

Quick update:  just acquired me a laptop with enough capacity to land on the moon 8^64 times.  Things are still very busy, but having a centralized tool that I can work on during downtime at work and at home... raises hopes.  Or maybe I'm just bragging about a new toy.  Still no screenshot Axem, congrats on the promo  :nono:
