Dear ml-16 during this month, i would like to congratulate you for popping the tiniest hole in the rear shield of a shivan fighter barely big enough to fit a fury through so i can do it all over again a few times until the bastard is dead.
-
On a scale from very to please kill me now, how bored are you ?
-
Bored and pooring over the fswiki. Why should we not vent our frustrations about this weapon?
-
One should totally do a campaign where one plays as the GTI whilst they are prototyping that jump drive that ST:R says is on the GTD Hades, which in turn unleashes the Shivans and you being forced to do escort missions with that ML-16 all day long.
-
To be fair, considering that the hull damage of a single hit from the ml-peashooter is a substantial fraction of a fury missile, which has thermonuclear yield, each laser pulse is actually doing quite a boatload of hurt.
Supposedly. pew pew.

The ml-16 is a decent weapon. Just not designed for shields. Shields are pretty darn good if straight up defacto laser weapons are used on them.
-
Not Holtzman Shields :beamz:
-
I liked the sound of the ML-16 a lot and I memorize it still, it also certainly sold why you'd want shields on your ships. Also liked the rate of fire on it, but the Avenger seems it was a straight upgrade so there's not much left for the ML-16.

1/3 the hull damage of an Avenger. If you're comparing it to the Training Laser maybe.
-
Back in the long-lost days before I knew what Furies were, I once managed to kill a Scoripion in "Out of the Dark, Into the Night" with nothing more than ML-16s. It must have taken me a good 10 minutes or something.

The ml-16 is miles better than the vasudan light laser. Before the shivans showed up, it was probably considered a pretty good weapon since its matchup was turds and then some.
-
It does do a decent-enough job against unshielded fighters, and you can even plink a freighter to death with them.
-
Dear ml-16,
You suck, your projectiles look like white snot have a low range and is completely useless against anything shielded.
Please stop calling me at 3 am when you are drunk (which is every night) yelling at me why I don't use you at my load out anymore.
In which : Stop drinking all the time, you have a problem get some help and bother someone else.
Bugger off.
Oddgrim.

I was going to make a similar post but Oddgrim's is way funnier

^ Same.

I remember the days when some user-made campaigns were incompatible to my german freespace:tgw version.
You were able to play a campaign with it... unfortunately it could happen that there were no avaiable ships and weapons and that you are forced to fly a GTF Apollo with ML-16s and Fury/MX-50.
I know that i was able to finish "Alliance fights back" with it, a campaign against shivans... maybe the campaign with the longest missions i've ever played, because a mission takes ages before the last shivan went down to complete the objectives.
Since then, i actually hate missions with ML-16 against shielded enemies

Ml-16 over reacts and over does everything since it split up with you. It's just a mess man. I invited it over for the holidays, and it just vaporizes the candles off my room mates menorah. After three times in a row, it wasn't going to get candle lighting done right the fourth time. My room mate ducked out to his "batch" pad firing up his xbox 360. Trying to console ml-16 is when it's seemingly drunken sob *****ing started up. Complaining for 15 minutes about how no pilot ever has long term plans for it, how pilots always drop it after eight missions, all that pilots are looking for is a quick dirty load out and mission objective, and on and on about it being the big fat ugly "practice" laser for virgin pilots. That was when i smelled ml-16's breath in passing and found the empty fifth of some nasty peach schnappes in my trash and knew that it was drunk for sure. Then ml-16 had a complete left turn out of no where emotionally, getting all horny and kissy kissy. I pushed ml-16 off me and ducking fearing another moment of it over doing something like the menorah. An alcoholic ml-16 definitely is, and got with my room mate that night when i got up off the floor and turned around hearing his door close and lock with ml-16 no longer in the room. Used an abused ml-16 is. I don't think there's anything i or anybody can do for it. I'm sleeping over at a friends tonight. Don't want to be around to find out my room mate got his wanger fired off.

ML-16 you are my first laser, always remember you, mi first kill was with you put in the sides of my first apollo also.
probably you are going to receive an upgrade in my campaing :D so, dont worry you are going to penetrate shields with limited efectivness but soon!
Bye :D

ML-16 is deep fried with garlic sauce
-
I like the ML-16 laser you know. I certainly wouldn't use it in a mission with the choice of a better gun, but it's good for those unshielded missions.
However, I whipped up a little mission the other day, and had 4 Apollos (with shields) with nothing but ML-16 lasers go up against a Cain. They took off 8% of it's health before they were destroyed...
I wonder how many Apollos with nothing but ML-16 lasers it would take to bring the Cain down?
-
Give them full furies loadout and improved AI. This should speed things up.
-
42. Definitely 42. But if using tactics, the number falls down to 1 :).
Dear ml-16,
thanks to you my Apollo was destroyed by a Shivan with a sharpened stick. So i have a question for you:
Y U NO KILL SHIVANS ??? :banghead:
-

Well yeah, but that was the point. I wanted to see how the ML-16 on it's own would fare against the Cain. Can't use fighters because they won't penetrate the shields.
I suppose the best I could do under these conditions is jack up the AI. But I wanted a fair test, so they were running with Captain AI, both the Apollos and the Cain.
-
You should be able to disable shields for a test like this if you used fighters.

The Shivan hulls are made of paper. They'd be able to destroy the Shivans much easier than the Vasudans, and the campaign shows the ML-16 laser is adequate against unshielded vasudan ships.
-
True be that, but with shields disabled you could test against shivan fighters. There's only one mission in fs1 where you can take on unshielded shivan fighters.
-
Dear ml-16,
Don't listen to them buddy, haters are going to hate. I confess that I love you, and I've written you a letter every day for the past year - I think that GTI is keeping them from you.
The great sound you make, your unassuming but pretty cool blue hue, your actual weapon sounding name. Man it was all just too much for me. You never needed fancy names like 'Avenger' or 'Flail' or 'Prometheus' to ah... compensate. No you were just you.
Never stop being you.

Cavemen don't hate the ml-16.
-
I played and finished the Phantoms campaign today. Only 5 missions, and I only got the 5th one for a speculative press of CTRL+Shift+S in the techroom.
ML-16 laser all the way. Pew-pew. :)
