This month's theme: Rage!
It's 2014! That means a new screencap season! We're going to do things slightly differently this year. Our many campaigns are filled with emotional ups, downs, and/or lackthereof. So let's highlight that with a whole year's worth of emotional themes. I don't care what's in the image as long as it portrays the particular feeling for the month. And yes, February will be the month of love.
Screencap Scoreboard:
Remember to check out the Wiki article (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Screencap_Contest) for tips on how to capture the best screen!

Penance indeed.

DAMMIT FRED, AT LEAST TELL ME WHAT THE ERROR IS.
-
After many bugfixes, SCP finally got FRED to the state where it had zero errors. Unfortunately, FRED was not designed to operate without errors, and promptly ceased to function. The error is, in fact, that there is no error.
(Based on its size, that looks like the texture replacement window- everyone's having issues with the damn thing recently. Mine just does nothing when you press OK but I know at least one person on mantis has a crash)

The error is quite clearly that the error is the fact that there was an error due to an error with having an error resulting in the error not showing the error, thus making the error non-existent and thus errorless, which is an error.
-
That, or we need to search the code for empty strings.
-
That background color is not helping at all to keep the rage controled Droid.
-
The background is due to being zoomed in on a waypoint.
-
The month is quickly coming to a close, who else is in?

Ah, that reminds me. Check this out, it pertains to my screenshot.
Feel the
The only mission that's ever made me cut off a campaign.
-
...Wait, really? The only time I failed that mission is when I intentionally abandoned the transports to see if I could intercept any of the Ares fighters before they reached the node (the answer: yes, but I only got one before the rest jumped out, and the Haulian exploded). I don't think I've ever had the drones do significant damage otherwise.
EDIT: Playing on Medium, to be clear.

I did clear it after a few goes like the guy in the vid, he starts at Medium, but goes down to Very Easy to just get it out of the way, I don't know if I did the same. I might have done, I'll do that if I'm simply not having fun, and this mission certainly qualifies, it's mind-numbing. What made me give up is how hard the mission was and how badly FREDded it was. If the missions are that hard and frustrating that early going, and that standard of FREDding is anything to go by, I'm not going to bust my ass grinding through the rest of the campaign.
Or so I thought. I've watched that let's play since. I will be picking Derelict back up sometime I expect eventually, after the story and everything has faded from my memory since I've seen it now. That mission is a blip as far as both difficulty and quality go from what I've seen. Hell, Derelict would probably be better off it was ripped right out of the campaign completely.

Derelict is 100% solid gold!!

Ah yes. Not long ago at all, I wouldn't have known what this was supposed to be.

I still don't :nervous:

It's connected with the pilot episode of Battlestar Galactica.

I've been thinking about this as a larger question. This contest is judged by one person and is about emotion. That means that one person has to have experienced whatever it is to judge it properly. A picture, and this one is a perfect example of it, likely won't be able to convey that emotion alone.
-
A screencap should contain all it needs. All the context and compositions within it self contained. If some frozen moment in time is only winning because it's part of an emotion invoking sequence or film clip... It ceases to be a suitable candidate as the emotional catalyst is no longer part of it.
-
Couldn't have said it better... Of course there's only one in mission screen submitted so far..... I know I didn't explicitly say.... But I assumed it was quite understood that images should be from the in mission engine. That said, Droid's is highly exceptional... :-)
-
I think the BSG one tells a pretty effective implied story even without context (and, of course, all art does draw on context :ARTPHILOSOPHY: :weed:)
-
My vote for Droid's entry! :D

Yeah, I have to agree; without context it's not that great. It could probably work only when alluding to sth from vanilla FS (FS2 preferably).
-
No, it's great without context. The arrangement of the ships implies struggle and attempted evasion, the (obviously inevitable) missiles create tension. Stripped of any reference to BSG it's still a fantastic entry because its visual composure is so strong. I guess it could perplex someone who literally wants a screaming face on the screen, but everything about the subtext roars 'aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh ****'
-
You know, I would say both my shot and Droid's shot fit rage a lot better than Mpez's. Mpez's for me is more about helplessness, confusion, sadness, I don't think it's a rage moment at all.
But I still think it should win just based on the effort and creativity that was put into it.
If you don't know what it is though, it just looks like a bunch of ships slapped down. I can say that, because I was like "huh?" for a few seconds before it clicked. And that's going to be a big problem I think in the future for these contests.

No idea what this one is.
That's a hell of an effect on the Orion though, that's beautiful. Is it just naturally exploding, or did you do something with it?
-
It's something that happens with some particle script when you're in screencam mode. Explosions just keep spawning at normal rate even though the game is slowed to x.000001 or something.

Oh. That's interesting, I thought it looks like that in normal speed as well. Good to know :)
No idea what this one is.
Well, this is sad :blah: I thought it would be quite obvious (the orion's last escape pod is obliterated trying to escape)

Ah, I see. I came back thinking of something else. Perhaps it could be even better if the escape pod does escape. The Admiral, just managing to escape with his life as his flagship dies in the background, swearing revenge.

Well, the idea was that rage is shown by the shivans, who kill the shuttle in cold blood. Anyway, again, if the screen doesn't work without an additional commentary, it probably doesn't work at all.
-
Yes, I recognize Mpez's screenshot and totally concur on the rage feeling. That mission is ****ing hard to beat.
Stupid escape pods, why can't they take a punch before asploding

It works fine too - anyone looking at it can remember missions about guarding escape pods, or see that the pod almost made it out of a terrible situation but didn't quite. Have faith in your work, man: by any reasonable standard of visual art everything you've submitted just SCREAMS the theme of the month.
Seriously, art does not require captioning. The image itself speaks and tells a story.
-
I don't think he has much to worry about with the "competition" he's going up against from me and Droid. :p
-
My only problem with the BSG shot was at first (not having watched the show) I didn't realise that the Vipers were all stationary / dead in space. On realising that context I now "get it"... and it's a good shot  (ditto for the pod shot, although I got that one straight away)
-
So my three screenshots are styled in a story of rage so to say. If you haven't played JAD 2.1 you wont get it.

The messages and head ani in Number 2 were intentional to show the angry 5th Beta tester. (I don't know if that disqualifies that screenshot but I went for it anyway.)

Its not very often that missions make me rage or even get angry, however as a TEV supporter this pissed me off.

This is pissing me off. Even as a Byrne hater. I swear to the stars I will FRED a mission in which the only thing you do is blow up the Atreus for hours.
