Title: How do you name your Campaign
Post by: Boomer20 on January 08, 2014, 03:25:34 am
Yes it's a weird question to ask. But as I get closer and closer to finishing my campaign. I've realised I have no idea what to name it nor where to start.
So I thought I ask the community.
How do you name your campaign? For instance what conventions to you go by.
Do you name it after a significant object or person.
Do you name it after a squadron.
Hopefully I can learn and finally put a name to my campaign instead of it's folder being <name pending>.

Themes or ideas that the campaign is based on are good. Blue Planet is a campaign about family and comradeship in times of strife, and the campaign is named to reflect this.

Choose a name short and snappy that people are going to remember. Something like Freespace 3: The Search for Bosch (Valentine's Day Edition) is a good example.

Fans of your campaign tend to initialise campaign names so choose something that'll shorten to something eye-catching. Something like Battle Of Olympus's Barren Stars illustrates this rather well.

Try to make it something that has to do thematically with your camp. (Something like Maelstrom would be good in story that deals with very troubled times involving unrest, conflict, etc.) It is best when they are catchy.

Example: The Sundering would be good title for a campaign about the disintegration of the GTA that took place after The Great War...

Off-Topic: Why, I always though Darius' posts on the original release thread seemed oddly out of phase with the discussion taking place...

Well... Rethink what message your campaing has, and turn it into some cool metaphor. A single word or phrase describing your whole story.

Mine (WIP) I simply named it after what it's about. It's about the evacuation of Alpha Draconis, so it's called Evacuation of Alpha Draconis.

However, I am also fond of things named after a significant if not the most significant spoken line in the game/movie, etc.

Or try to think what sensational title a newspaper would use about whatever happens in your campaign.

I go minimalist, usually.

It sets the tone for the campaign, sets the thematic, the very core of what you are trying to express with your campaign.

Literal names like "Evacuation of Alpha Draconis" for instance relay the idea that the campaign is in fact a kind of a documentary about an event that took place in history. More metaphorical names like "Blue Planet" can carry different themes like "home" (the blue planet), and a feeling of "blue" nostalgia, longing, sadness or coldness. Freespace 2 was to be titled "Exodus". There's a whole theological thematic under that name beside the literal meaning, but notice that "Freespace" itself intends to convey gameplay mechanics.

Wow, was surprised when I got up this morning to see so many replies.
Thanks for the responses, hopefully will help.
That campaign name generator would be cool.
So expanding on this, does that mean if you were to have multiple campaigns (in a series like thing) you would choose something that conveys the overall themes or events etc. to the campaigns?

Well, there's no one way to name a campaign. Sometimes you actually have to play the campaign to get it (like "Age of Aquarius"). Other times it's pretty obvious- just a relevant word that sounds cool, like "Warzone". My current project, "Shadow Rising", gets its title from two things: 1. "Shadow" is a key word in the plot, and B. the "Shadow" is expanding, growing, "Rising".
