Title: GTI Dionysus?
Post by: yuezhi on February 02, 2014, 08:00:35 pm

I also just had a go at the GTI Dionysus

About 1100 polys (due to the pipes) Bit a clipping on the panels but otherwise it's ok. I'm currently mapping it.
If you guys don't snap it up, I'll release it to everyone :D
And I always thought no one ever bothered. :nervous:

Does any model of this exist? I've always been fascinated by this concept.

It's on the wiki, under a different name (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/TI_Achilles).

It's a low-poly instalation from the Unification War mod. Cool concept, cool model but it's pretty outdated. Some good modeler should take it on his workbench and add a few polys.

Thank you Black Wolf.

I always assumed Volition names would have precedence over whatever else modellers come up with.
That and imao Achilles doesn't sound fitting for a space station even if it's a really dangerous swiss army knife of sorts.

Still can't help but imagine those panels having a glassy blue texture like the ISS.

I'm 90% sure that Volition never actually gave names for most of the concepts (It says as much on the wiki page (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Concept_art). A bunch were applied by (IIRC) Pegasus V when he hosted the concept art on his site, and in some cases they stuck, but they're no more correct than any others.

As for the model, I think it's interesting, but kind of oddly engineered. Those spindly arms don't look like they'd be able to take much in the way of shear forces before bending or breaking. Compare that with the Big, bulky look of the other terran installations (Arcadia and Ganymede) and it doesn't entirely fit, IMO.

That said, it does kind of work in an early TV War setting, if because it sort of implies a connection with the space stations of today, with the solar panels and cylindrical body. It also seems like it would be fairly easy to model compared to a lot of the other [V] concept art - it would be a good project for someone still learning to model, so from that front I hope someone does make an effort to upgrade it.
