Title: FS1 and FS2 Menu Backgrounds
Post by: Snarks on February 17, 2014, 02:20:11 am
Does anyone know how the menu backgrounds (the menu screens with the doors, people, and whatnot) work? And how much work would it take to make something like that?

Have a look at this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=67991.msg1342479#msg1342479); i.e. a template for creating new mainhalls.

uhhh, niffiwan, that tool can NOT create new mainhalls. It can create the rest of the interface, but mainhalls are not within its powers.

Snarks: Mainhalls are somewhat complex. They require not only the graphical assets, the animations and sounds, they also require entries in mainhall.tbl (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Mainhall.tbl).

If you want to take a look at how Mainhalls are made, I would recommend checking out mods like FSPort, or BP, or WoD, or Antagonist; those all provide their own custom mainhalls.

This thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=80783.0) gives the basics of how Mainhalls work. However, to make one from scratch that has doors and animations much like the retail Mainhalls is a lot of work. I should know. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=81657.0)

Simple "static" mainhalls are really easy to make tbh. Especially if you don't give two ****s about animating the "buttons"/doors it takes all of like, 2 minutes to whip one up from a screenshot.

Really depends how "involved" you want it to be.
