General Battuta has raised an excellent question:
Where are these good sounds!? WHERE
So far, I have not come across a single audio pack release on these forums. Most of the audio for mods seem to be rips from elsewhere or stock-sounds. Thus my question is: Why? And are there any audio enthusiasts here at all? We need moar better zunds! (No not the scrappy MS iPod ripoffs :P)
-
I haven't the faintest idea where to get good sounds for weapons and the like. The only good material I've heard comes custom from Darius and the like.
e: or i made it
-
i tried doing some sound engineering. all i could manage was some annoying fuzz (see nukemod's horrible gatling gun effects). when i need sounds i just go to one of those royalty free sound effects sites.
-
Whenever I need sounds I just go no****sgiven and "steal" them from wherever :nervous:
Don't have the faintest clue to sfx are actually made. Though probably recording actual sounds is the usual starting point, which is something very few people have the equipment to actually do.
-
traditionally thats how sound effects were done. with odd vocalizations, abusing instruments, or banging random objects into eachother. ive also seen at least one tutorial where waveforms were literally drawn, sampled a million times, and modulated in various ways, needless to say the results weren't good enough for me to bookmark it.
-
Well I do have a few audio recordings from years ago that I didn't do too much with except playing with them a bit in Audacity.
EDIT: ~5 mins, and an old fan noise recording.

Just google for "free sound effects" and you can find websites where you can grab sound effects that are at bare minimum free for non-commercial use.
-
Then you can torture them in Audacity until they're so horrifying PhantomHoover won't play your mission (http://fi.somethingawful.com/safs/smilies/f/0/getin.001.gif)
ps darius made the (really excellent) UEF mass driver effect out of lions and tortured souls

Wow, where can I get those? Those lions had it easy for too long!
-
They're in the released versions of WiH. Chances are you've heard them before - they're quite distinctive!
-
Thunder and lightning, lion roars and the screams of Persians getting kicked into pits.

Earth Defence has a lot of ultra-awesome sounds for various weapons and other stuff. All of our blue beam cannons have custom beam sounds. Basicly all of ED weapons have. Generic Corvette did a great job with various sounds in ED, and many were never used. There is one problem with them - this is still exclusive stuff and it's not depending on me :( . I would have to ask project leaders.
-
Horray exclusivity.
It's great except if your mod is dead. :doubt:
Well, not even.
In my defense of the dead statement, the last I've heard anything happening was a "final push" to finish FREDding around December 2012, and that was through asking team members - I don't think anything's been posted in the public section since...the shockwave release (?) beginning of last year?
-
Well... Then actually you have no idea. After some stagnation [almost a year?], we pushed ED forward and getting closer to finish it. Anyway a lot of sounds won't be released, as they are not used in modpack. I will contact Shiv and talk with him about some small outtakes release.

Where does someone go to record tortured souls?
-
Well, it was a contact the Vishnan entities recommended after they recorded their part.

nuke's basement.

Diaspora has good effects cause we have Torc to do them in-house for us. You have no idea how many sound engineers we went through before we found him though. Sound engineers are definitely the hardest speciality to recruit but if you've got everything else done, the best place to look is on the ModDB. We never got anyone to remain on the team from there (IIRC, after months of searching, Torc approached us) but I suspect if everything else was simply awaiting sound, we probably could have got someone from there.
