I'm new to mobile gaming - I don't have a smartphone, but got a Nexus 7 for Christmas. I've been playing a lot of Real Racing 3 and Asphalt 8. I also have installed N.O.V.A. 3, Galaxy on Fire 2, and R-Type, but I have not played them much.
What do you all play? What do you recommend? What hidden gems am I missing out on?

I'd recommend against anything that requires you to place your thumbs over screen space where things will be trying to kill you. I played R-Type on my phone today, and every death was in the lower-left corner where my thumb was. Games designed for a touch-screen are almost always better than ports, especially twitch-game ports. Avoid Metal Slug and Raiden Legacy.
Angry Birds
Plants vs. Zombies
Eufloria
Canabalt
Anomaly Korea
Just Risk It! (A Risk clone)

I have N.O.V.A 3, The Dark Knight Rises (Batman game), Modern combet 3, Scrabble, Words with Friends, Zynga Poker, Brothers in Arms 2, Candy Crush and Gangstar Rio. I have also played Galaxy on Fire right up to the point of buying the Space Station but after that I found it a bit of a grind. For some reason it won't reinstall on my phone. I think it's a storage realted issue.

I've gotten strangely addicted to Despicable Me : Minion Rush.

My list (all games free):
Lazors and Dots are games with simple design but really fun.
Badlands is a great game, with a LIMBOesque graphic style.
Traffic Racer is a nice time waster.
Strikefleet Omega seems to be a really nice sci-fi game. You have a fleet of ships (carriers, destroyers, mining ships) and you point where your fighters should fly, which asteroids should be mined, where the destroyers should shoot etc. It's a similar mechanic to Air Control. I'm really digging it.
You could also try Frozen Synapse. It's not free, but from what I've been reading it's really amazing (there is a pc demo available). It's a turn-based tactical shooter with a cyberpunk style and great music.

Chess.

Ingress. Well not that much anymore, but a bit every now and then, if there are bigger operations going on.

I'm an ingress player. It motivates me to run a mile and a half to the nearest landmark and back a few times a week. Good with phones, not practical for tablets. I am an ardent plague Inc player. Also sketchbook pro and flappy bird (still free on android)

I played my own Android game (the one that only made 3 sales :(), and I played Angry Birds on PC if that counts. :blah:

Anyone have Flappy Bird? Ridiculously hard (to get any significant score anyways), simple, and addicting.

The thing that gets me about Flappy Bird is that I was playing a helicopter game on Addicting Games a decade ago that was the same exact concept. Same goes for Angry Birds too. In short, people are dumb.

Smash Hit (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mediocre.smashhit)
Free to play, then $USD 1.99 if you want checkpoints to work. Read the reviews, this game is awesome.

Thanks for the responses! I'll definitely check a few of these out.

Definitely get Sonic Dash. I'd highly recommend getting "MyBoy" and playing some GBA Metriod or Zelda games, or Mother 3. You should also get SAS: Zombie Assault 3.

here's one from the WP8 side, Hill Climb Racing. Fun little time sink.
but strolling through the store just makes me want to kill myself...
-
None anymore... had the "Android bug" for a while, then at some point asked myself, why I was not playing a proper game instead. ;)
Too much work, not enough freetime I guess heh.

Get Sega's Crazy Taxi port. You could download it for free until the 19th (yesterday).

a friend of mine made this (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.huntergames.runbillyrun), it seemed quite good (not being a particular fan of puzzle games in general myself)

I've mostly played Asphalt 8, Iruna Online, and QI4A. I also have Retroarch and GBCoid.
