After some talking with Spoon being all reminiscent of the past and delivering him something, I got all inspired to model again. I decide to remake my LSF Knight (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=76711.0). Except this time it's going to be the SF Knight. Will there be an LSF version of this one? Who knows.
I actually used an older model of mine as a base. Some may recognize it, most won't. The idea of this is to make it less of an overgrown Challenger with a lot of copy-paste turrets and make a more versatile ship. There will be a beam cannon, but I'm probably going to make it similar to the HTL Hades side beams turrets and have it on a swivel. Maybe multiple of them for multitarget engaging fun.
-
I really like this
What's the colour scheme going to be?
-
So is this going to be SF version of the Lord? Otherwise it might be as well a CRF ship in place of the Champion.
-
I remember the name Knight from somewhere, probably the in-game information.
The Sol Fleets are certainly getting a major upgrade. First the new Champion, and now this beast. It's a very nice looking model, I can just picture fighters streaming from both bays.
I wish you luck with this, AndrewofDoom. It could be a fine addition to the new WoD fleets.
-
What is the SF relative to the LSF? Is it simply Star Force, or a different branch altogether using the same starting letters?
-
SF stands for Sol Force, the armed forces branch of the Sol Union faction. Let me dig up the relevent post in the game forum ...
EDIT - There it is (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=84995.msg1698960#msg1698960)
-
Heh. I just found that and was about to edit my post to scratch the question out.
-

No. The Knight will likely be comparable to the Lord, but is definitely SF through and through. The name Knight is actually from a never seen LSF ship from the original WoD, and I had made one version of the older one. I figured I'd keep the name since Spoon did for the Champion as well and all the old LSF ships. Unless he hasn't been telling us something. :P
That being said, I plan to make the SF and LSF Knight. It'll be really easy to do.
What's the colour scheme going to be?
It'll match the new Champion (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=74794.msg1740144#msg1740144). Spoon provided me the source files for reference. It's gives me a much better reference on what I really should be designing. Also allows me to yoink parts of the ship that are likely common with the SF ships. Namely, the turrets and the winglets.
I remember the name Knight from somewhere, probably the in-game information.
The Knight was mentioned only in WoD...once maybe twice? From what I gathered from the little information in game and from talking with Spoon way back when, the Knight was a battleship. It was beefy, big, and unlike most of the LSF ships, had a pretty impressive broadside firepower.
It's a very nice looking model, I can just picture fighters streaming from both bays.
Don't forget the two underneath as well!
Anyway, updated the first post with my lastest progress.

I'm guessing that information will carry on in this version as well?
-
I think that colour scheme will look good here. And of course, it's great that it matches up with the other powerful SF capital ship, the Champion. :)

From what I have floating around in my head, I think it was billed as the most powerful capital ship. Or at least one of.

Ohhhhh nice! :pimp:

Different faction colors, weapons and overall stats, I presume?
-
Maybe also a slightly rigged up or stripped down mercenary version, with only 2 fighterbays.

Dhem models

No. To put it this way: Spoon tells me that the only difference between the SF Champion and the LSF Champion is who's insignia is slapped on the side of the hull. The same can be said about the SF and LSF Knight.
Speaking of the LSF and insignias, the LSF actually got a new one. You can see it on the Challenger II at the end of the Turn 16 video. I didn't notice that at all until I saw the Champion's source texture. :P

I don't know anyone in their right minds would offer up a battleship to mercenaries. Even in a stripped down fashion, the Knight is long and massive. To compare, the p3d link above was updated to give a good size comparison with the Champion, which is about 1,000 meters long or so. It's closest Terran WoD comparison that I know of is the Lord is about 2km long, but visually doesn't have much mass to it. Ideally to me, I would make the Knight WoD's version of the Orion...well, not visually anyway. Iron Wall of Humanity indeed.
Getting off that tangent, let's talk about something Orions and Knights might have in common: BEAMZ and PIRATE SUPERDESTROYERS. I was mulling over ideas for beam turrets. I wanted them to be aimed and be big and scary. I had no idea, but then Droid pointed me toward YAL-1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_YAL-1). It looks weird, but I can't think of anything else. What do you think?
-
Eyes on a sphere are your best bet, I'm afraid. Or you can always bend things around and put a beam emitter in a cannon, like I think the Orion does.
If you need cannons, Supreme Commander has some pretty cool ones.
-
Maybe secondary beam turret similar to Dimensional Eclipse's Typhoon.
-
I've updated the p3d link up above. It's also got a primitive turret layout (Still in the works, looking for feedback on that). Just need some button turrets to add and I'll soon be able to UV map it.
-
Button turrets :snipe:
-
So for a while I've had people recommend that I not use a standard barrel turret and go for the Eyeballs of Doom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YAL-1_Airborne_Laser). For a while I kept resisting because there a whole (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/HEHc_Hurricane_V) bunch (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/HEC_Typhoon) of (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTD_Orion) ships that do that, not to mention Wings of Dawn throws realism out the window. After all, we all know that all the tech there is secretly powered by magical girls, right?
Sadly, I gave in. I prototyped a Knight with two Eyeballs of Doom. These are not 100% finished, because I want to see if people think this is the right way to go.
I like big beams and I cannot lie.
-
I very much prefer the other Knight.
I suppose you could create two versions, but I very much prefer the other ship. This one just looks forced, if you know what I mean. The other Knight I'm looking forward to seeing, I like the design and it should fit right into the WoD universe.
-
The other one just looks like that smaller ship used as a reference and scaled up, though...not very interesting.
And is this some sort of joke, because that looks pretty...half-assed, sitting in uh, square braces and all. :P
I think what would work better is if you took the old one and integrated slightly smaller versions of these into the "wings", replacing the fighterbays (because this are bootleshap, not career). Possibly following:
[19:54] <Vaktezraj> it'd be better if it were limited to a 160ยบ FoF, if it were set into a slight recess in the hull
-
1 big beam in the center, rather than 2 odd 'smaller' ones on the sides.
-
I think the consensus is that there is no consensus. :P
But I am flexible about it. I'll just wait for more opinions to come flooding in. At first I did like the two super honking big beams but now I'm teetering all over the place. The thing I do know is that I wanted it to have at least 360 degrees (or very close to 360 degrees) of beam coverage for the turret on at the very least one axis. You know, so it doesn't have to turn around to aim its beams at the target. "Iron wall of Humanity" and all. Ain't gonna budge for you, pal (Unless you're right behind me). That stuff?
That was the special stand out trait I wanted it to be from an otherwise simply overgrown Challenger or Crusader with hangar facilities.
Just mulling over my thoughts now. Some of the ideas I'm getting.
- Just go with the original idea that I had first posted. (Knight as a battlecarrier)
- Get rid of the hangars. Give me MOAR BEAMZ. (Knight as a battleship)
- Put a big beam in the front and keep the rest as originally planned. (More or less a variant of 1)
- Downsize the hangar bays and attach BEAMZ on the side pods instead. (Knight as I originally originally planned (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=76711.0), except not aesthetically. Mostly battleship with reserve fighters for self-defense and to resupply and repair nearby allied fighters).
If more than anything, I want to hear Spoon's thoughts on this.
-
While I like the first version, it would make sense to go with the second option if the Knight was described and planned as a battleship, with the fourth option as a compromise.
-
It should have a small scout/shuttlebay, though. WWII battleships carried seaplanes, modern ones (well, Iowas in their operational configuration) carried helos. So it makes sense for a battleship to carry a few scout fighters or shuttles.
-
Battlecarrier would be my preference.
-
Personally, I'd rather see this ship as a pure battleship, or at least mainly a battleship. The FS-verse already follows the "large ship = battlecarrier" principle; I'd like to see other universes diverge into more specialized ship designs.
-
Wow
such beams
much kanigget
very nice
-
It built itself from scratch since Io Shipyards wouldn't build it to perfect spec.
When it leaves drydock, the metaphorical water becomes wetter than usual.
It taught a Skirmisher to fire its beams...in all axes.
A Challenger once compared beam sizes with it and left only feeling like it was still a child.
Lords to pray to their Lords for salvation at the sight of it.
When it goes bowling, Volyas willing become its bowling balls just so they can hear it say "bowlya" in a husky voice.
Elephants feel like fleas when flying alongside it.
Its gaze causes Ascensions to ascend to a higher plane of existence, breaking the will of the Breaker helpers.
The Nordera become pacifists to avoid its wrath.
To the Cordi, bug spray is a better end than it.
Fura'ngle become brave warriors just so they can listen to its song.
The Zy envy its warrior prowess.
Armageddons feel like they are in Armageddon when they fight it.
It is...the most interesting battleship in the galaxy. And the Iron Wall of Humanity.
"I don't always command ships, but when I do, it's a Knight-class. Stay-"*log terminated due to hull breach. Transfer of all personal data to blackbox successful*

Clearly the moron who wrote that doesn't know how to write. And get his priorities straight.
(Yes, the bad writing is intentional)
-
Are that new little things on the sides are beam mounts or fighterbay or missile batteries?
-

Actually, I forgot to smooth it out from before I changed it. I decided I'll prolly redo the front to house an Eyeball of Doom instead.
-
Bah, I like the current prow. Really makes it look like a battleship. If you're gonna have frontal artillery, add two or four smaller guns on the sides.
-
So, basically Spoon told me to give up on the eyeball of doom thing, which honestly I agree with. I just entertained the idea a little bit since there were people who wanted it.
New one here. Looking for another idea for a big beam of doom that can rotate.
-
You can look at the Archangel Dreadnought from Homeworld Cataclysm. It has 2 huge beam turrets, one right on top, another below so they cover most parts of the ship.
-
DahBlount and I talked about it a little bit (He's actually the one who modeled the missile launchers for me on the latest model update). I have a feeling for something like a swivel turret like the HTL Hades. Problem is, I'm not sure how I want to visually convey this.

I don't know much about this kind of thing, but what about the beam weapons seen here?
Anyway, this is quite an enjoyable experience watching your model taking shape like this in these regular updates. I wish you luck. :)

And so it begins...
Silo doesn't support transparency, so that's why there's a black background for the nameplate.
Before you ask, yes I already made nameplates for the other 5 potential ships.
-
I love 3-barrel turrets
Add more comms arrays and antennas behind the bridge?
-
Textures are WIP.
-
:doubt: yaaaaawn.
:yes:itsawesomereally
-
So I finished the texture (you can see the final update above) and sent it to Spoon.
I'm expecting purty pictures of this to show the world when you're done. :P
Edit: Looks like this a new page, soooooo.
-
Niiiiiice.
Hey Spoon, now you've got an excuse to make another turn video. :D

It looks sooooo good, I want to try and eat it!
I think I would go with selection 4, my second choice being #2.
Here is a question, with the knight being relegated to a battleship role, the LSF would need a dedicated carrier to carry, supply, and repair fighters and other small craft near the front.
If we get another delicious looking ship out of it, I would definitely go with option 2. :wakka:
-
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that role be filled by the Guardian Angel?
-
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that role be filled by the Guardian Angel?
the GA and its class iirc is specific to the joint T-C forces, the terans and Cyrvans would have their own fleet ships to fill those roles
-
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that role be filled by the Guardian Angel?
The Guardian Angel is the only ship of its class in existence at this time. So something else is needed.
Had me tearing my hair out a few times that I didn't have a carrier vessel I could use when planning my WoD campaign.
-
Well, you have the Champion now from Stranded. Go, finish your campaign! :P
-
Well, you have the Champion now from Stranded. Go, finish your campaign! :P
I started it pre-stranded, but I'll be waiting for Spoon to release the remake and using the shipset and story from that.
-
Is it ready to be played with? Want to play with it so bad.
-
It is done, just waiting on Spoon to put on the turrets. Because lazy.
-
Wow. I was Freding a mission were you help a crippled Knight escape an ambush. And It's all " WHO DO YOU THINK I AM? I'M THE JUGGERNAUT *****!" and basically destroyed all the things. 13 Cordi Gunships, 2 Cordi Mother ships, 16 Cordi solders, 8 Cordi Warriors, 3 Nordera Battleaxes, 12 Nordera Pilagers, and 12 Nordera Bombaders, and she was sitll at 98% health...
