Title: Where to start?

Not sure I am even in the right forum.  I'll try to keep it to the point:
Bought FS2 on GOG .. great game but old graphic

Is there a simple way to update it (some mod pack?)

I am looking for better graphics, what should I be looking for?

I'll keep reading and see what I can find.  Any links or pointers would be appreciated. 

IS FS2 the same as FSO?

Got it installed and running, it was a bit of work figuring out what, where and how.. but it looks much better now.  I am guessing that I would run through the original campaign prior to running any of the mods?  Is that correct or should I be looking at any of the mods in particularity prior or during my first run?

FreeSpace 2 with the MediaVPs is a great place to start. Then I recommend http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=80688.0
