Title: Will changing a campaign folder name be harmful?
Post by: CT27 on April 02, 2014, 02:58:16 pm
When I played the recent re-release of Derelict (I'll call it Derelict 3.7) I had a problem I didn't have in the previous release of Derelict (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.582).

I currently have Derelict 3.7 in my Freespace 2 folder (its folder is simply labeled "Derelict" though)  I was considering downloading the previous version of Derelict that I linked and trying that again.  However, I would want to be sure I was loading the correct Derelict (since seeing two "Derelict" folders might be confusing).  Could I rename the newer Derelict version's folder to "Derelict 3.7" or is changing the name of a campaign folder not recommended?

I.e., when I load up the launcher I don't want to see two "Derelict"s when I go to select a mod.  Is it possible to change the newer one so it says "Derelict 3.7" so I can pick the right one?

In most cases it will do no harm. However, if another mod.ini calls this folder as a dependency, it'll break everything. That won't happen with Derelict, but it will happen if you alter the name of a Blue Planet, FSPort, or MediaVPs folder (probably among others).

Instead of changing the folder name, change the description in the mod.ini.

Thanks.

In the wxlauncher, the campaign description usually says something like "Five years have passed since..."

Now I got it to say "(3.7) Five years have passed since..."

So if I ever download the previous version of Derelict, the campaign description will read normally and I'll be able to tell them apart.  Again, thanks GB.

Unfortunately, to have both Derelict versions available at the same time (Derelict and Derelict 3.7), I had to rename the folder with Derelict 3.7 in it to Derelict 3.7.  When I tried to put a second "Derelict" folder in the FS2 directory, it wouldn't let me have two folders with the same name.  I had to either just have one, merge them, or rename one.

Hopefully this won't cause problems.

It won't.

---

It only matters if a certain mod requires Derelict 3.7 to run - none exist, and it is unlikely that one ever will. In that case, either point the .ini file in the mod that requires Derelict 3.7 in the right direction, or rename Derelict's folder back.

Right now I have two Derelict folders in my FS2 directory:

[Derelict]
[Derelict 3.7]

A little care with mod.ini files and checking dependency and conflict should be ample with derelict.
