Title: VeniceMirror official thread!
Post by: procdrone on April 09, 2014, 06:39:46 am
So finally! I'm making the official thread!

VENICE MIRROR

GTVA yet again is contested, while NTF failed many years ago, and shivans were cut off in Capella, new adversaries arise themselves to fight the exhausted Terran and Vasudan alliance - the Star Alliance!

My work will include:

-New storyline! Post Capella societies must face new dangers, while contact with Earth is still unmade to this day! Not only rebellious Star Alliance threaten the survival of Terrans and Vasudans, old enemies will resurface, but we shall not be alone in this fight...

-New ships! Terran and Vasudan shipwrights build completly new fleets to counter any threat, shivan or not, fly this new marvels of Human enginnering! Or shoot them down! Star Alliance has it's own seperate, unique fleet! (ScoobyDoo's Fleet Pack)

-New weapons! Scientists were not sleeping for all those years, so expect to mount deadly tactical weapons on your fighters! Capital ships were no exception, New weaponry made them deadlier then ever!

-Heavy Shielding! Star Alliance scientist finally found the way to generate capital ship sized shield bubbles! New tactics must be developed in order to fight them! So they were that genius? Or maybe it's another of Ancients legacies...?

-New Aliens! That's right! More aliens to shoot! Or well... maybe they will be one's blasting us...

-Music! Thanks to Belisarius, and other (That's my sweet secret!) mod will be filled with the best music that community has to offer! More immersion, better fun!

-Graphics! That's right! Skyboxes, and backgrounds in heavy amount will fill every mission, but remember to not to stare into them for too long, or those Star Alliance bastards might shoot you off...

-More then just one campaign! Yes! You will get to know the whole of the story, how things happened, why they happened, and what happened after you finished!

So well.... that's for the beginning.

Initial campaign, the Laramis Civil War is under way! the story how Star Alliance was founded in the first place. Maybe you seen or played the missions in development I was uploading.

Have any questions? Maybe you want to help me in development? Just write a PM, or let me know here!

More to come! Work in progress!

Very very long time edit: The recent info on the mod development is more likely to be found on the last pages. (It changed a lot over the course of time).

If the source of music is the same as backgrounds, well... Tnan you have a good taste :D. This looks promising. I'm waiting for more news!

BTW. As for the name, phoenicians were the ones who designed this kind of mirror. Venice Mirror is not a right name.

I know they don't, and this word is not even the "Correct" one!

I don't want to spoiler! It stays this way! ^^

Only thing I can say, will be: SACa Venece. Nothing more!

I asked my friend who play with graphics to help me.

So here we came up with the logo for the Star Alliance
(http://screenshu.com/static/uploads/temporary/k7/49/eo/4ebsj3.jpg)

And for Laramis Supreme Reign

Those are cool designs, but I would recommend you dial back the gradients. The Star Alliance logo would work much better as a flat graphic, without the faux shading effects, especially if you want to use it as a decal graphic on ships.

As for the Laramis design, again, less is more. The whole brushed metal look is cool, and steely grey is always a nice, classy color, but I think it's overdone. Flattening it out, reducing it to the shapes and linework, would look much better, much "flaggier" for lack of a better term. In addition, the way the colors are set up makes the "Lara" part of Laramis sort of fade into the background, a higher contrast would work better (or moving the text out of the logo altogether).

I have star alliance other design, without any shades:

those images are meant for command briefing, so when you play other faction, the standard GTVA insignia don't appear ^^

Post by: The E on April 17, 2014, 05:11:22 am
Yes, but even there, I think it helps to take a look at how the iconography for real organizations looks like. I can understand the desire to make a design that's "cool", that has all the bells and whistles of modern photoshop technology, but you gotta ask yourself: Does this actually look like something a state or state organization would use?
It's like, these are organizations that want to project an image of severity, of dependability and stability; Are those gradients and metal textures timeless, or will they look tacky in a couple years or months? Using stuff like that is fine for a video game company or film studio, they have the freedom to remix their logos every few years or for every release, but for states? States need and want a bit more timelessness, IMHO.

I really like these, especially the Star Alliance one. Probably helps that I have a thing about yellow and black, but I really like the Star Alliance one.

Nereid? Well... Interestimg :). Nice screenshots. May I give You some advice? Don't use nebulas in that big scale. I recommend to not use bigger than 5-6. Also try to use many smaller nebulas to create one nebula from them.

As for logos... Very cool. Does your friend take requests?

Betrayal, well, the logos we managed to make, are modified existing logos, so if you have something you like, and want to edit it, then I could arrange that for you, but drawing up from the scratch logo... well, I don't know.

Title: Re: VeneceMirror official thread!
Post by: procdrone on April 29, 2014, 07:02:44 pm
There will be Vasudan navy in action, due to my storyline, for the most of the first campaign, Vasudans will be rather a side faction not involved in civil war between Terrans, they don't want to mess with it. (It's just like in Inferno).

Only later the security council will convince the Emperor to deploy his fleets in order to protect the GTVA from even more progressing Laramis Supreme Reign into the GTVA space.

But I don't want to spoiler more then it's necessary, Vasudans will be present, and vital for the plot.

That is correct, development is going, maybe not so fast as i wish for it (life and stuff) but its going forward - thankfully... and even faster and better thanks to Betrayal's help, to be honest, i wouldn't be that far without him.

I know there was a big silence out here, but really, I don't know what should i post here without spoiling the whole plot :)

Stay tuned, Campaign 1 is worked on.

Maybe ill find something nice to screen-shoot and post up soon!

Anyway, let us start with the *Ships Showcase*!

Let us meet SRC Midgard

When LSR risen in Laramis to overthrow the oppressive GTVA goverment, they still lacked numbers, and Midgard was just an answer to this. This ship, nicknamed a "cyan fenris" has been refitted with number of unknown technologies possessed by LSR, and mass produced in their secret shipyard to fill the gaps as screening ships for their battle groups.

It's fitted with TWO* new White "Ice Shard" Beam cannons on it's nose, and has it's standard yellow laser turrets replaced with it's faster and better equivalent developed by post-Capella scientists, allowing it for faster rate of fire with improved damage. It's standard missile launcher has also been refitted with exclusive LSR anti-cruiser missile warhead, allowing it to engage other cruisers more effectively then its predecessors.

But it's not the weaponry that makes this ship better then its ancestors, it's improved alloy armor can withstand punishment from every ship within it's class, and come out victorious. It's onboard advanced computers allow this ship to perform "nano-jump", a effective method of flanking enemy ships, and disabling their engines once Midgard leaves subspace, making it's pray unable to move and fire back.

**----------------------------------------------------------**

* Since Betrayal is picky about writing issues...

Alright, it is time for another *Ships Showcase*!

This time we will be looking into some heavy bastard, namely: SRD Indigetes

This is one of the three destroyers that LSR has on it's payroll.

SRD Indigetes is still a question for GTVA scientists and engineers, every GTVA vessel that encountered this ship, reported a massive power readings fluctuations, power that needs a reactor beyond anything that Alliance can mount on a Orion class vessel while allowing the ship to perform inside combat environment... but Indigetes has that.

Even if it's power reading are off the scale, it's not weapons systems that alliance warships should be afraid of. Indigetes is a combat carrier, heavy armored enough to bring up a full squadrons of fighters and bombers to the middle of the battlefield, and successfully maintain its position, due to it's advanced point defense systems, and jamming equipment the ship is a tough combatant to engage. It also has an ability to produce weapons and fighter in the field, that gives it quite a flexibility and enables it to operate outside the logistical support for long periods.

Like all LSR prototype ships, this ship was built in secret LSR shipyard, and outfitted with technology mostly still unknown, but like all Reign vessels, it's has on mounted "Ice Shard" beam cannons for anti-capital ship warfare, and stronger anti-fighter capabilities then any alliance warship may have in a long while.

SRD Indigetes is currently placed under command of Rear Admiral Robert Kalivas.

Title: Re: VeniceMirror official thread!
Post by: procdrone on July 20, 2014, 03:33:39 pm
Well, there was no posts in a while, so I'll just go with the *Ships Showcase*!

This time, we get to see something GTVA made, and namely: GTD Titan

After the Second Shivan incursion, all Alliance engineers agreed that the Hecate failed as a heavy line combatant, and whenever it found itself in direct combat with Shivan forces, it was failing to perform.

That is why GTVA needed a new weapon to face any further Shivan threats, and their joint en-devour developed the Titan.

Titan is a top of the notch ships ever developed by GTVA to date, dwarfing all and every Capella-era ships. While able to face shivan destroyers toe to toe, it is still valued carrier within the fleet, surpassing even a Hecate's in that field.

Since you're taking on a system trying to secede, this plotline kind of reminds me of "Luyten Civil War".  (Note:  I'm in no way saying you're ripping them off.  Also, LCW was a great campaign so I mean this as a compliment).

I really look forward to playing this some day.  Hypothetically do you think we could see a late 2014 or early 2015 release perhaps?

Both campaigns share only the system where the rebellion is happening. That's all I can say :P

Oh man, you're SOOOOOOOOO wrong there. LCW was at the VERY VERY beginning of my mod (Laramis Civil War), but after suggestions as is this so similar to Luyten Civil War, I've changed it all. And only, only similiarity goes for Laramis i think... (In LCW, first briefing, Fleet stationed at Laramis was to fake an attack, in order to draw their forces off the node to... Wolf? This or another way. I don't remember now.) And my campaign starts in Laramis, Laramis.

I thought that all, ALL similarities were... taken away by now. Please tell me what seems so that similar, and we will work it out.

Post by: CT27 on August 20, 2014, 01:32:03 pm
I think the campaign looks great, no need to slow down work or push back a release date just to work on reducing perceived 'similarities'.

Also, this Archangel looks good.  Is it bigger than standard GTVA destroyers (maybe bring back the superdestroyer designation)?
Title: Re: VeniceMirror official thread!

If I recall, the Archangel is almost Colossus scale in terms of size.

Correct. Archangel is bigger then any destroyer. Just look at the thing in comparison to that modified destroyer in a screens just few posts above.

Title: Re: VeniceMirror official thread!
Post by: procdrone on August 21, 2014, 05:42:20 am
Well, you're correct there guys. It won't stay designated as GTD. I was thinking of something like GTVA Archangel, just as the Colossus was named, because the fleet don't have a mainstay of ships in that size, designation should be unique like that. If not, It'll bear the name of Super Destroyer.

Yes, Archangel is a flagship for GTVA fleets, one and unique.
Title: Re: VeniceMirror official thread!
Post by: Nyctaeus on August 21, 2014, 06:11:42 am
Didn't we discuss about it? Archangel shouldn't be unique battleship, but a class of bigger vessels designed to be flagships of each GTVA fleet.

We did talked about it. But for now, there will be only one Archangel. Its too early after the Second Shivan incursion for GTVA to have all the firepower. They will be inducted to the fleet as flagship for each fleet later, that's true, but for now, it is only one ship.

Unfortunely, Archangel model was too problematic for me to use (Model and textures issues), and therefore was withdrawn from the mod, and replaced with a special asset Ephyra. Most of you would know it from Shadow Genesis.

And the final asset is finally here! Thanks for the courtesy of Betreyal, SAHC Volator Class, the Venice was finally added.

However, I am more then excited to announce that work over Venece Mirror progressed to Beta state, which means almost all of the hard work over it is practicly done! There are couple of things that needs to be done here, but I think I'd be able to get a proper release before this year ends!

Cheers!

Are you currently looking for an editor? Because if you're not and you don't already have one, you should be.

Editor? Well, I do gladly accept any kind of help, but could you explain the editor role a bit more... hmmm simply? (I'm just having a bit of problem understanding what that might be)

By editor he probably meant someone who will check the text lines to correct grammar mistakes and other kinds of text bugs.

Into looks very promising, the only thing that I did not enjoy that much was the music. Please try not to overload your campaign with "too much epic" music :) Sometimes it can make the game rather funny then dramatic.

Ephyra vs Venice... will the newest LSR technology outmatch the sheer firepower that GTVA thrown at them?

Yes. FREDing work seemed very nice (nice work with the cutscene camera), but spelling and grammatical errors made it very hard to watch.

I am fully aware of my disadvantage here... I just want to complete freding work, and take care of the balance, and text as well... Im sure to post up, looking for people able to help me with this.

I can help with very basic spelling and grammatical errors (mostly spelling) as I'm a native english speaker if you wish to utilize my aid. But I'd suggest finding someone else to do it as well for some errors can slip under my nose.

Hello! This time, I come to ask your aid. As VM progress is going well, I've been "rejigging" a lot lately, and..... well, to the point.

There is a major problem I am facing here - "Flavor text". As AdmiralRalwood correctly pointed out, I am not best English writer out there, and therefore, I am looking for a person who has that "artistic drive", and knows English grammar well enough. If there is such a person, and is willing to help me out (messages, briefings, debriefings, tech describtions, etc, etc, all that needs some work on), I'd be more then happy to have such person on-board.

The second matter, is casual beta testing - looking for people who could point out any bugs, inconveniences, balance issues, and so on.

I hope ill get a solution for the first problem, or else, its a shady future for VM...

Unfortunely, Archangel model was too problematic for me to use (Model and textures issues), and therefore was withdrawn from the mod

Would you consider releasing the model into the FS Modding forum to see what our modelers can do to fix it?

I don't have the files anymore, sorry. But the model itself is available from http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.319 (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.319)
It gave me a loot of problems, honestly. (not much changes to the one from the link really, just used my own weapons for it)

Hi. I just thought I'd drop in and let you know that I've been keeping an eye on this thread and to encourage you to keep going. It's been nice to see as the months have gone on how you've continually stuck with it and released more and more screenshots that have made me intrigued, and began to look more and more professional and organised with what you're doing. And since we seem to have had a number of projects in the last months that have fallen by the wayside or fallen into difficulty, it will be great to see someone new complete a project that has been many months in the making.

Hey there Lorric.

I know this thread is somehow dying, but its not because I stopped working, I do work, even if very slow, I have completed about 7 missions to be almost release ready and the rest (about 10 missions) in late beta stages, and I continue to make the late betas to be almost release ready as i have inspiration, and time to do that. (its like 1 mission per week, but don't take my word for it).

There are no screenshots, because almost all the graphical and ships are already set in, so there is nothing new to show... without spoiling the plot.

And about the plot... Even if I do finish all the missions to be in a release worthy state, there is a bugger that won't allow me to release it - english spell-checking, and dialogues checking.

To be honest, I think most of you seen my "intro" video, and how english looks here, and ill be honest, Im not english-man, or using english good enough to keep dialogues and all the words correct, interesting for most of you english natives.

That's for the setbacks.

It would be nice if a beta-tester, or someone who is willing to check over all the text in my mod volunteer to help.

Hey TheHound.

I've got some unfinished business to take care of with BtA, and I don't know how long that will take. I make no promises, but I might be able to help you sometime in the future if you are unable to find someone else to help you by then.

Hello, long time no see.

Some of you might even think that this little project died/was abandoned.
Good news, it doesn't.

But it gets even better. I have actually finished most of the FRED'ing work on my campaign, with only minor issues, or balance issues to be solved. The project is nearing completion.

So here, I come to you asking to make my project even better by your own input!
I am currently looking for someone who is willing to help me with:

*Beta-testing
*English-language editing

As with beta testers, its not as big issue, but I know, that I demand a lot, when asking for English editor... there is not just text that needs to be corrected, but some other things written as well. As far as I can provide with simple English, It would be demanding for someone who is willing to write a professional text, so you can enjoy Venice Mirror to the fullest, without my stupid errors an mistakes which could be seen in the intro I've uploaded some time ago.

Please contact me either on skype, or via PM system if you are willing to assist me, thanks in advance!

Hey all!

In about 1-2 weeks (HLP Time, varying depending on WoD's release), suit up and get ready to fly for Laramis! 'Cause Venice Mirror Chapter 1 is inbound! 14 missions' worth of quality FS, for your playing pleasure!

If anyone wants to help with last-minute beta-testing and/or English proofreading, TheHound (and I) would love to have you onboard! :D

I don't want to pour cold water on here, but there is a risk of being overshadowed by the imminent Wings of Dawn release if the release happens near to it, especially if WoD releases first...

With all the work that's gone into this, that would be a real shame and undeserved. Campaign releases don't happen very often these days, and it should get it's own time to bask in the spotlight.

I would suggest if there is a clash when this is ready, delaying the release and feeding hype / teaser material into this thread for a bit first before releasing, or perhaps releasing, but then feeding in the hype so it doesn't slip out of people's minds.

I think HLP can withstand having 2 campaigns release near the same time together. Given the present state of activity, both will be in the highlight bar for many months and moons.

Dunno exactly. We've got 17 missions + cutscenes (no fiction viewer or other WORDS), about 8 1/2 of which still need heavy editing for English. Take that as you will, though you might prefer to review the edited product once we're almost done.

...Good point. I'll talk it over with TheHound.

What needs to be done? About 8 missions' worth of dialogue left to English-proofread, and 15 missions' worth of gameplay to beta-test. I've already beta-tested the campaign so far, but we could use an outside opinion!

Since when was disabling environment maps the solution to bad shinemap alpha channels? I'm not even convinced there's any problem there, and even there is shouldn't you be telling FSU that?

Also...that text could really use some editing/grammar check.

It's not the shinemap, it's the HDR builds.
I've found that:
- the -no_emissive_light flag looks broken
- the envmap is too strong (you can see environmental reflections even if the shinemap alfa is totally black) Disabling them in the launcher fixes it.
But since Swifty is still working on those builds, I'd say it'll get fixed sooner or later.

Also, those screenshots make me think of FC3: Blood Dragon. :)

You could try Freespace Files (http://sectorgame.com/fsfiles/?dir=).  It also gives direct links that are compatible with the FSOInstaller.

Have a look at mediafire as well. I think its a gigabyte they give you on a free account... so if the mod doesnt exceed that size then you could be good to go.

Mediafire doesn't provide direct download links, preventing its use with the FSO Installer.

Fair point Admiral. But it could still be used as an alternative mirror if someone doesn't want to use the installer for it. I probably won't use the installer for it when it is released.

Generally, I only use the installer if I have to completely reinstall FS2.
