Post by: Master_Drow on April 12, 2014, 03:10:08 am
We got reviewed by Scott Manley, a major youtube space game reviewer. See the video here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ueG3SZrTaI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ueG3SZrTaI)

That's actually been mentioned on the "Where Have You Seen Diaspora Mentioned?" thread. Thanks anyway though.

A lot of respect to those guys!

I watched through Scott Manley's video review and really chuffed to hear how much he enjoyed our work. Always a pleasure to have your releases favourably reviewed, particularly parts I worked on (e.g. engine performance).

We'll take his comments on board about difficulties setting up the joystick.

Definitely. Feedback like this is really useful. A lot of the decisions made in Diaspora R1 were based on the feedback we got from Beyond the Red Line.

Looks like he is doing the rest of the missions. He just released the next video.

Listening to it on YouTube like this makes it more apparent that this game's script needed one more editing pass. There's some awkward verbiage in these briefings.

He toasted two Raiders when one of them flew in front of his torpedo solution.  :D

That would be an awesome AI profile to add. Ships that take the bullet for capital ships if they're close enough. :P

And seeing as it's mission 2, it also makes it apparent that the mission and campaign design had some very rough edges.

I don't know if I'd be that harsh. A first-time player spends the whole mission confident of what he needs to do and how to go about it. That's pretty successful as game design goes.

Maybe I've just spent too long overanalysing it...

It might be worth looking into, by and large Cylon caps are already dependent on the Raider escort for its anti strike craft protection.

In R1 that didn't make as much sense since the Colonials were mostly KEW based but for R2 that's a different story.

He's keeping up with the videos... up to part 6 now. The full playlist is here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYu7z3I8tdElQ5n0IdG6sp97VvzXNaV2N

It was actually video 6 that led to the Diaspora 1.1.1 release. Ace noticed that he didn't get the ending cutscene.

I started playing due to his first video. I'm already in love with it, despite its problems.  :D Now if there were a kick starter to get the licencing, and make a longer version for release, perhaps, with an improved engine, visuals, better joystick support... Ah well, a man can dream...

Kickstarter might be iffy.... licensing. Not to mention distribution of profits.

Mmm, I know it could be difficult, I was more dreaming aloud there. All I know is, I want more, and if there were an improved version, that would be awesome. Did I understand correctly that there is a second campaign in the works?

Yes, there's a 2nd campaign in progress.  There's some more info in the developer blog (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=182.0) board.
