Title: The Winter Soldier
Post by: StarSlayer on April 14, 2014, 09:06:40 am
Was very topical and proved that a superhero flick can be successful at crossing genres and be much more than about punching things.

Spoiler:
It had all the great action set pieces and witty dialog that you've come to expect in the Marvell franchise but the inclusion of the espionage/thriller elements really made it standout.  Don't get me wrong it wasn't exactly the Marathon Man or Manchurian Candidate but still well executed for a superhero flick.  While I wasn't terribly surprised as the plots unfolded, though the hidden bunker was pretty eerie, it was a pretty bold shake up of the universe.  In addition the juxtaposition of Cap's man out of time ideals against the more Machiavellian modern surroundings really gets a lot of mileage out of his character.  He might not be as cool and flip as RDJ's Tony Stark, but in this format Steve Rogers really shines.

The tackling of the implications of surveillance was very relevant especially since, while it might not take the grandiose forms of Magnetic Tape Nazi derived algorithms and air to surface bombardment helicarriers, many of the pieces actually exist.

Of course as all that hardware merrily dumped into the Potomac I could not help but cry out "My God Cap think of the tax dollars!"

Overall I thought it was a pretty bold move for the franchise both "in universe" and defining what superhero flicks can be.  I'll certainly be keen to see the next installment of Captain America's story.

Seriously if you haven't seen it what are you doing still reading this?  Go see it now!

I'm gonna post stuff in spoilers here just in case this is meant to be a clean thread.

Spoiler:
This had a lot of deaths in it, which is probably more realistic even with the giant flying carriers and the computer brains. I'm not a giant comic book nerd but even I knew who the winter soldier was. The entire audience gasped at the reveal.

The story was ok compared to others (I'm looking at you Thor 2 evil elves come out of nothing)

Anywhos, it is worth seeing in theaters which is something I rarely say about most movies I see in trailers or at the movies.

Sad part is I'm not sure what movies are next on my list to go see.

I didn't let it overpower me with morals and FX. The insight project was nice. But the winter soldiers origins were glazed over and there was too much blah. Blah, meaning plot filler of no consequence and convenience. Falcons origin was glossed over as well.

Combat was nice though. Agent Maria Hill always brings a smile to my pants though. Proper milf.

6 out of ten dekker points.

Divergents gets two. Don't watch it.

I saw Winter Soldier last Wednesday, but I had seen "Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D." the night before with significant tie-ins.  If any of you aren't watching the show and are left with a "Well, what happens next?" feeling, you may want to consider on-demanding a few episodes and watching tomorrow night, as they are playing an encore edition of last week's episode followed by the new one.

Yea one of my complaints
Spoiler:
any Shield/Hydra regular agents conflicts just didn't really happen. There was never any real "who can we trust?" on the part of shield agents because there really weren't any shown.
