The new Flaming Lips album has arrived today! w00t! :D

Yes, I have deliberately weird tastes. I like stuff like the 'Lips on the one hand - Mercury Rev, Pavement, and all their derivatives. On the other hand I'm into Fugazi, Dismemberment Plan, Rival Schools, Burning Airlines.

Y'know. The usual. :p

Man, I love ALL music. Classical, Rock, Heavy Metal, Rap, Rave, techno, trance, you name it, I love it. Except that Girl/boy band ****. That music sucks. Theres no life in them, its just the same old recycled ****.

Hmm, for rock I could say that Metallica, KorN, Megadeth, Ozzy Osbourne, Smashing Pumpkins, Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, to name a few. For more happier and softer rock, theres Creed, Offspring, Linkin Park, etc. Then for more club, rave, techno stuff, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Apollo 440, Vood and Serano, etc...
For more classical, the old dudes (the composers that started it all), and mostly all film soundtracks.

Oh well. Thats my list. I've basically mentioned mostly main stream stuff thats come off from the top of my head, but I got ****loads of other groups lying about my room that I forgot to mention....

I LOVE S CLUB JUNIORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111one

well, to an extent.

I went to T in the Park over the weekend, and the following impressed me:

Those were tha bands that impressed me, ie were better than i thought they would be, not nesecerally the ones i like.

However, i like The Cooper Temple Clause (strange stuff they describe as "space punk", best song is Lets Kill Music), Biffy Clyro (Happy/agressive/emo core band from Glasgow, best song is "57") and Hundred Reasons (proper rock stuff, very good album called "Ideas above our station").

Weirdest song I like: Time Warp
Most Rock and Roll: Johnny B. Goode
Heaviest : For Whom the Bell Tolls - Metallica
Most emotional: Always - Bon Jovi

Techno...no, seriously, gotto Winamp.com, and check out their radio-the highest ranking is Techno. I mostly prefer rock though, but when I'm doing work, classical, or the 60, 70, 80s, etc.

"Disturbed" I just found out, they're cool if you like metal. Try Down with the Sickness, it's nice.
otherwise I'm the old school guy, so i'd say Queensryche, Megadeth, Helloween, Angra, Judas Priest, oh well, why not, Manowar, Korn maybe... mmh... Metalica, Guns'n Roses and Iron Maiden, I like more or less, too... commercial, they say (tho I still like Maiden, ok ). For loud stuff ( but not too loud, I'm not a black/death metal guy ), overkill is nice.

Blacksheep's list is cool, but I'd add various japanese dudes ( I dunno their names ), they make some cool music for animes ( different styles: Record of Lodoss war, Cowboy Bebop, etc )

S-Club Juniors Factoid:
Listen to their song, One Step Closer To Heaven. It's a suicide song.

One step closer to heaven baby,
Means one step closer to you,
There'll be no more living without you baby,
I'll be countin' each minute till I'm back to you,

And it continues similarly.

What you'll find me listening to on any given day

-Radiohead (My favorite band. If I had to live the rest of my life with only two albums, it'd be OK Computer and The Bends)

-Pink Floyd (If I got to pick 3 albums, Dark Side of the Moon would be the third)

-Marcy Playground (It's a damn shame that no one really listened to them much other than their famous single Sex and Candy. It's like, one of their worst songs)

-Just about anything by Yoko Kanno (I've played some of the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack for my friends who like Jazz and they don't believe me when I tell them where it came from)

-Green Day
-Reel Big Fish (Their new album is way sweet)
-Less than Jake (I think they made a song on there just for me. "History of a Boring Town")
-Sum 41

-eminem (I usually hate rap, but for some reason I can't put The Eminem Show down. I don't really care much for his other cds though)

-Led Zepplin
-The Beatles (The White Album is just sweet, as is "Yesterday", "Hey Jude", and "Eleanor Rigby")

-Sublime
-Weezer (Although they've yet to put anything out that can top their Blue Album)
-Nine Days (I went to one of their concerts and the power went out during the middle of their set. They went off stage, got their acoustic guitars and played a set of music on their accoustics. Then when the power came back on, they went back off stage and got their electric instruments and finished their set. How many other bands would do that?)

Finally, I haven't gotten this cd yet, but it should be in tomorrow. It's called Majestic Mix: A Tribute to Nobuo Uematsu (http://www.majesticmix.com) and it's a fan produced and funded cd with tons of techno remixes from the Final Fantasy Series (as well as other games Uematsu composed for). The samples I listened to on the site were quite cool. I can't wait for their SquareDance cd to come out.

Meh, Dynamo and Thorn are the only ones worth saving up to now... :D

Here's my (non-extensive) list of english-speaking bands:

- Led Zeppelin
- Pink Floyd
- The Rolling Stones
- The Doors
- Eagles
- Velvet Underground
- Jethro Tull
- Green Day
- U2

I'll mention a few Brazilian bands too, just cause they're too good, even if not known by you:

- Engenheiros do Hawaii
- Acústicos e Valvulados
- Tequila Baby
- Comunidade Nin-jitsu
- Ira!
- Legião Urbana
- Titãs

Among lots of others, of course. And these are the songs I consider the best "contemporaneous" (sp?) ones, in english:

- Hotel California, Eagles
- Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin
- Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd
- Paint it Black, The Rolling Stones

I never found the music from UT particularly inspiring. Some of it was good for the whole adrendalin-charged mood, but it was best to turn it off anyway if you were a fake-pro (which I was not, I hasten to add. I was crapola).

Okay, I wasn't knocking old music in general. Just people who only listen to old music and complain that bands "aren't like they used to be" and "all this new-fangled music is just a bunch'a hew-haw an' clap-trap! Jarn Lennon could'a done this in his sleep!"

Mmmhm. Yeah. :p

Oh yeah, and I do like old music too: Television, the Talking Heads, and so on. So there. :)

Well in the case of Oasis' material John Lennon could indeed have done that in his sleep and most likely surpassed it.

Blur were pulling better material out of their asses when fools were running around shouting 'Noel is god'. I'm not even a fan of Blur but recognise that they were easily more interesting. The only thing that Oasis played on was the fact that you could sing along while totally rat-arsed.

BTW do you guys know that the soundtrack for Pikmin was number 1 in the Japanese album charts! Waccy. :D

Yes, but here is the pearl of wisdom I always carry around in my pocket:

Oasis are ****.

They always were, and will be in perpetuity. No matter what any 'music publications' tell you, they're ****.

With few exceptions, MOST popular bands suck right now, anyways. At least as far as rock music goes- as far as I know, country, etc. is flying high (unfortunately, I do know quite well how country music is faring, living in the South and all. Bleargh.) Comes from nobody knowing where the genre is headed now- pop music has gone entirely mechanized, rap is becoming rich whiteboy fare and thus "pop", nobody's really pioneered anything new in the classic designation of rock music for years, and everyone's afraid of any version of rock not entirely experimental, since the label suits are pandering to teenagers who, they fear, might play one of their parents' REM or Sex Pistols records and recognize the hottest new whiner. So, we get white rappers, Creed, and the whiny, pissed-off nose-singers who slaughter their guitars in between complaining about how their parents don't let them stay up late and watch TV, trying to catch the essence of their target market. The bands most supported and advertised by the RIAA suits are the most stereotypically angsty teenager, and generally free of all the trappings of skill- they become the most popular because they're all we hear about.

hell yeah. I went to the main stage to see them at T in the Park this year, they were headlining on saturday night.  I watched 4 songs, and thought to myself "this is dull" ; it was.  I defied the 40000 people there and went to see Basement Jaxx on the NME stage.  Who were brilliant, its nice to see a band who aren't just riding the hype created by an album out 7 years ago.

One of the best performance I've ever seen, is a toss up between the Jimmy Swift Band and Rythm Seed.  Saw JSB at the Attic (its a bar in Halifax). ****in phenominal. They played one song for 25 minutes, and it wasnt the same goddamn thing over and over. I saw Rythm seed at this coffee shop in Chester (in the middle of ****in nowhere), these guys are just damn good....

I like tank!, but prefer RFB :) cat's on Mars is funny :D sounds a lot like a music from Escaflown (which, incidently, happens to have "cat" in the title too ).
Blue Bird, I have an idea of using this busic as BGM for a space battle ani, w/o any sounds effect, just this music ( one of my countless projects that won't be done before, pfff, oula, at least that :p )

It's a "bang your head to the wall" song

Personally, I really like A Moern Way of Letting Go, and (I Am) What I am Not. It's like old droney Idlewild man, but with...err, tunes. :)

Don't get me wrong, I like 100 Broken Windows too. There's a corvette in BWO called the Idlewild. :D

Yep....  I'm more of a mellow chap myself, so I prefer that track and 'i never wanted' (etc), but it's generally a top notch album IMO.  At least another 2/3 good singles there.

Not really. :p

Right, since this was originally a thread where you could recommend good bits of new music rather than disgorge your whole record collection, I'll try and move back towards the original topic. Hah. Fat chance.

But anyway.

Here's a couple of things that I think have been particularly good recently. The first isn't exactly new, but it's hardly from 1977 either. :D

FUGAZI - The Argument - Usually Fugazi are all shouty-shouty and as a result people don't find them very, er...musical. But this one is! The Argument is their newest record, and disposes of (some of) the shouting for bigger, better-produced songs, some of which are even sloooow. Oh yeah, and one other thing: double drumkits. ;)

THE FLAMING LIPS - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - Just out last week! Buy it whilst it's still hot! I really like the Flaming Lips, because they write tuneful, melodic songs that are almost like pop, but without the associated lobotomization. And their live shows are excellent, with fake blood, giant gongs, balloons full of confetti and...teletubbies. Oh, and the majority of their recent songs are about love/death, but any band that can write songs called "Evil will prevail" and "Psychiatric Explorations of the fetus with needles" gets my vote. :)

Your turn!

Nope. Fugazi are Washington D.C. www.dischord.com is the label they run. The Flaming Lips are from Oklahoma City. Their site is www.flaminglips.com . The Flaming Lips are psychedelia; Fugazi are hardcore punk. :)

Oh, and Siamese Dream is the best Pumpkins album. All the rest are a bit...bizarro. :doubt:

I buy twice as many albums as I would have had it not been for WinMX.

Listening to Helmet - Like I Care right now.

What a band.

hehe now I don't feel so old...

I think I saw every Dischord band at least 10 times in the 1980's, usually at the smelly old 9:30 club (before they moved).  I worked at the university radio station, and one of my roommates was the drummer for Government Issue, so I rarely had to pay for shows, either :)

I blame all the DC hardcore shows for my bad hearing now.  Really.

See, being old has its virtues. You got to see some of my favourite bands - and meet the people, I guess. Fugazi? Jawbox? :)

And yes, I understand that they really were that noisy. :D
