Title: [WIP] Sarkoth's epic quest for a complete currently working campaign list.
Post by: Sarkoth on July 29, 2014, 07:05:56 am
Welcome to the currently working campaign list [WIP]
(meaning this list is both currently being worked on and pointing to campaigns which are are currently working. Oh and I could always use some help, just saying.)
Anyone interested can post here in this thread or apply to get rights for keeping this GoogleDoc (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YP1QoiqrrhXpL9ytb1KuxTTMYf9f7QRZGT-MSpXZONE/edit?usp=sharing) updated

Requirements:
To be able to enjoy everything from the following list to its utmost potential, there are five requirements that will need to be installed prior to any of the listed campaigns. If you are completely new and / or have no idea what to do, have a look here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=78710.0). It looks far more complicated than it actually is, I promise. If that's too complicated, you could also just use the FreeSpace Open Installer (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=87537.0).

We have seen quite a few of different releases for Free Space Open in the last decade and apart from ever changing version numbers and a metric ton of user generated content, three of the probably most renowned and important releases were the [1.] Mediavps (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=65038.0), [2.] Mediavps_3612 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70736.0) and [3.] Mediavps_2014 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=86475.0). To play everything on this list, you probably want and need all three of them as well as [4.] Fsport (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=84358.0), wich brings you the original experience of FreeSpace 1 to FreeSpace Open. You also want macfie's patch for Fsport to make it compatible with the Mediavps_2014 [5.] You can get it here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=86514.0)

Oh and in case you're overwhelmed by the sheer amount of available campaigns, please feel free to consult Battutta's campaign guide on what to play first or next (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=80688.0).

Due to the fact that FSO is an ever evolving project, campaign compatibility has always been an issue. To be able to make certain campaigns playable again, people like the FSCRP (FreeSpace Campaign Restoration Project) have stepped up to update older Campaigns to work with newer builds and more shiny graphics. As there has been no 'global' documentation as to this point in time, half of the available content is either outdated and / or broken with current builds, which makes especially trying to get some of the smaller projects working, some sort of a hit or miss endeavour. Due to the fact that it is possible to easily customize the appropriate mod.ini of any given campaign to use a newer version of the mediavps - especially because that step is not working with all campaigns - the compiling of this list was started. And is still in progress. And will keep being in progress either as long as I remain an active member of HLP or until no new content is ever released anymore. Not seeing either happening anytime soon, so I guess we're good for the time being.

*I also present the FSport Legacy Campaign Bundle (https://www.mediafire.com/?4a6jahvn8z4j0x8) (I take no credit for any content whatsoever, all rights remain the respective author's rights) containing: 25th Year, Alliance Fights Back, Battle For Altair, Duke Squad, Dark Raji, D-W, Hellwolf, Infinite Dimension, Internal Conflicts Ep1, Marduk's Shroud, New Beginnings, Nubian Conflict, Ross128, Second Vasudan War, Special Ops, Start of the Vasudan War, Tango, The Counterstrike, The McCarthy Campaign, The Road to Victory, Vasudan Academy, War, Wolfpack Legacy and a few other standalone missions I scooped together, which you can access from the tech room, all bundled together into one extractable RAR. Needs 3.7.2 RC1, otherwise a few campaigns fail to load or have errors.

The things on this list either work fully or to some extent. This list ist probably not yet complete and needs additions, so I would be glad for any suggestions. I will also cross-reference with scotty's campaign repository as well as ModDB, Sectorgame and FSMods to check if there's some more working campaigns I missed after I managed to test everything already on the list here.

Broken Campaign List as of 3.7.0 and later
Marduk's Shroud - First missions crashes on startup, but you can skip to mission 2 via CTRL + SHIFT + S in the tech room mission simulator and play the other 5 missions just fine.
Allied Worlds (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.59) & Allied Forces (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.60) 109 Errors on startup and 24 missing ship classes. Epic fights between Ulysses, Ulysses and even more Ulysses.

Any help with keeping this project up to date by reporting issues or suggesting additional entries would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: By suggestion of Cyborg17 I can haz made a GoogleDoc (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YP1QoiqrrhXpL9ytb1KuxTTMYf9f7QRZGT-MSpXZONE/edit?usp=sharing). It doesn't look pretty (changing all the html codes in the document was bothering enough), but it works. Anyone who is willing to help and wants permission to edit, please step up. I will keep updating both this thread and the doc regularly and implement any changes that have been made in the doc here.

UPDATE: With 3.7.2 RC4 being out (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=88178.0), I won't retest everything for now, but I will do all future testing with 3.7.2 RC4. Until eventually the final version comes out. Not sure if happy or sad.

UPDATE 13.09.14: Partial thread overhaul! More to follow.

My bad, mistook my Ancient-Shivan War folder for Ashen Wings. Rectified! Especially since Dimensional Eclipse already is in the list.

+1. This is a great idea! :)

Maybe this is something that could be in line for a sticky, if not now, in future...

You have Return To Sol listed but not its prequel "Incursion".

I saw you have "The Incursion" just now.  If you're referring to the campaign that's in continuity with Return To Sol, I think its title is just "Incursion"

I think the rolled into one campaign has been named "Incursion Return".

All three should probably be listed.

I wanted to avoid double entries, although I am fully aware of macfies marvellous work on the double pack of the Incursion and Return to Sol. Played it just about three weeks ago. I will add the info though. Thanks for mentioning it.

Small update: For now I will only include hyperlinks to release threads for campaigns and/or projects hosted on HLP itself. I figured I'd do the stuff on the list first before stretching my feelers into the abyss of sectorgame, remnants of the volition archives or moddb. Because if I try doing everything at the same time, I am bound to fail. I also plan to dedicate my time regularly for a longer period to keep things updated as the list progresses. It's far from something to be finished or done during an odd weekend.

For the first few days I will probably end up just adding the information for all "newer campaigns" which definitely are (or at least should be) working with all current nightlies.

FWIW, both times I went through Windmills (last time was through the version given by the FSO installer), there was a show stopper in the second or third mission.  It involves an event that uses ship-replace.  Not sure what the original intended behavior was, though, so I only fixed the error in my own campaign.

How are we going to track all this data?

I like this idea a lot   However, I feel that the forum is not the best place for it because only one person (or an admin) can update the list in the original post.  Maybe instead the Campaign List (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Campaign_List) on the wiki could be cleaned up and used for this info?
e.g.
*) Add a info on the SCP release and mediavps version to the "requirements" field
*) Move the non-released entries to a similar but separate page?
*) Remove the special content field (this info could be added to the Story field)
*) add all the new campaigns listed above that aren't already on this page

(just thinking out loud here)

@ Axem: The naming continuity of your JAD releases doesn't follow a standard number scheme since the third version. Which is both fun and heavily annoying at the same time. ;)

@ CT27: I'm not sure if I remember it correctly, but Into the Dephts of Hell had an ridiculous amount of errors and was practically unplayable with any current build. I put it on the list of things to recheck it.

@ Cyborg17: Yes, Windmills unfortunately isn't fully working. I never saw the 4th mission myself. But it is an experimental proof of concept anyway, so I kept it in the working list.

@ niffiwan: The idea to implement this information into the wiki somewhere - not necessarily the Campaign List - was a thought I had initially, as a lot of entries are definitely in need of an overhaul or aren't even existing, but keeping the wiki updated in regards to which campaigns are actually working with current builds would in my opinion take quite a bit more of manpower than a stickyfied thread on the board here. Let me be completely honest: Even if I got the rights to add stuff to the wiki, the mere thought of linking to other wiki pages and updating or writing not yet existing entries feels like quadrupling the necessary workforce. I am all in favour of that idea eventually, but I'd rather have an as complete as possible list on the board first, from which we can continue or start an endeavour to get the wiki up to date afterwards. Does this make sense?

Edit: Macfie, I couldn't find your mediavps_2014 patch for the fsport anymore, that one is crucial for other people to get the campaigns working as I have stated. Could you do me the favour of linking that for me, so I can include it in the thread?

Edit 2: Have been on an updating and testing spree for the last three hours.

Yeah, that makes sense. If all the info is gathered into this thread anyway, moving that to the wiki shouldn't be much more effort.

So let's say we got to the stage where everyone is testing like crazy.  Are you going to be the one to update every time someone has data to update?  I would use a google doc or two, make it public with a link in the first post, export it to your computer periodically as a personal backup.  I think it saves version history itself, too.

Also, with this system people could be doing multiple steps at once.  For instance someone could post their progress on fixing Windmills which you populate your list with more mod packs.  Methodical is good, open source is better.

I'd like to suggest two more campaigns for this list:

"Rogues"
"Rise Of The Corporates"

Added

Rise of the Corporate was in the list as simply "Rise", removed the duplicate and remembering it was a rather short campaign, already played it through. Rogues is next.

Great list so far.

2 suggestions:

1-(this is more of an update than a suggestion) Cyborg17 has created a complete new file for "The Aftermath".  Instead of downloading a main file and then downloading a couple patches, there's just one file to download now.  I posted that on the first page of the thread in the opening post.

2-"Sol:  A History" is a campaign that's pretty good.  It worked well with 2012 mediaVPs last I checked.

Well handy thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=78518.0) I made should help with making what little sense there is for JAD and version numbers. In any case, all JADs are good for any recent build. JAD:XA needs 2014 mediavps, while the rest need 3.6.12 mediavps. I will eventually get everyone up to 2014 mvp levels!

Minor update:

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=87904.0

There's been a title change to the thread containing Cyborg17's update of "The Aftermath".  I retitled it from a thread asking for an update to the campaign into a defacto release thread for the campaign.

So far, not many people have stepped up for the list itself and testing. Just one, to be precise. I could always use more help. ;)

Updated the Aftermath,
added Sol: A History
Will look into the patch for WoD

And thanks for the link Axem, will implement that as soon as I have a another sliver of time.
And after I have been made aware of it again, Shadows of Kraken is now also on the list. Hah!

Implemented a few more updates.

Do we have any accurate list (at least for some campaigns) on how many missions which campaign has? The database on the wiki is dodgy at best in regard to that.

I couldn't really go far with testing in the last two weeks due to family issues, but I should pick up the pace soon again.

It certainly is! I don't know of any good list, you're probably stuck with something like; open the .vp and check the .fc2, or press CTRL-SHIFT-S in the mission simulator to see how many missions there are in a campaign.

You listed in your campaign list that you are having problems with the campaign Tango.  It is a FSPort campaign and has no special ships or weapons.  If you are getting 13 ship class errors with all and any (even without) mediavps, spawning in an Ulysses with no weapons, there is something wrong with the mod.ini file.
It should work without any problems as long as the mod.ini is set right.
Mod.ini should say:
secondarylist = fsport-mediavps, fsport, MediaVPs_2014;

Macfie, I tried that and I still got the 13 ship errors notice for "Tango".

FSOpen log is attached.

Code: [Select]
Passed cmdline options:
  -mod tango
Building file index...
That is clearly not using a mod.ini containing the line Macfie just stated, or you forgot to re-select the mod in the launcher.

I selected "Tango" in the launcher

and "secondarylist = fsport-mediavps, fsport, MediaVPs_2014; " was a line in my mod.ini

I just checked all of that.

The only working download link for "Tango" I could find (freespacemods) did not come with a mod.ini file in the downloaded folder.  I had to put a blank one in and copy that line in.  That line is there.

Besides that line...what should the entire mod.ini file for "Tango" look like?

With some help from another forum I was able to at least start the game.

However, after starting the first mission I noticed another important problem:   it starts both my wingman and I in Ulysses and with no primary or secondary weapons.

That's pretty much why I added it to the broken list guys. If someone does know how to make it work properly without rewriting anything in the VP itself, I'll correct it ASAP.

Thanks niffiwan, that IS actually something I didn't know you could do. At some point I will just blitz through the mission simulator counting missions. Although today shall not be that day. But I'm looking forward to be able to provide information to enable us to properly update the wiki afterwards. Compatibility will always change with progressing builds, but missions numbers, for example, do not. =)

CT27 there is something wrong with your command line.
It reads -mod fsport-mediavps,tango,fsport-mediavps,fsport,MediaVPs_2014;
It should be -mod tango,fsport-mediavps,fsport,MediaVPs_2014;
I just played Tango last night without any problems.  I have it in a folder with some other FreeSpace 1 campaigns with just one mod.ini file for the entire folder.

The file has:
[launcher]
image255x112 = FSPort.bmp;
infotext     = A number of campaigns that use the FSPORT.;

[multimod]

secondarylist = fsport-mediavps,fsport,MediaVPs_2014;

I understand from this thread http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=49267.40 that CT27 got it to work by starting with a new pilot

Macfie,

In your secondary list line near the end of your post, shouldn't it be "MediaVPs_2014" instead of just "mediavps"?

Yes it should read MediaVPs_2014.  Copy paste error on my part.

This is perhaps a minor detail question, but is the mod.ini case sensitive?

In other words, for the 2014 mediavps, is putting "mediavps_2014" as acceptable as "MediaVPs_2014" (which is what I usually see posted)?

It's as case-sensitive as the filesystem it's used on.

A new pilot? Even after 4 pilot file corruptions over the years and more than 35.000 kills lost, that's clearly unacceptable.

Do you really care? It's actually obvious that properly working mod is much more important than kills count.

Actually, he just deleted the .csg file, which just stores progress for that campaign in particular; he didn't create an entirely new pilot.

Actually I'm one of the completionists that are already bothered when after a campaign I don't get told in the campaign menu that the campaign has ended. Happens with some campaigns that have a cutscene or credits screen as the last mission. I can remember how outraged I was when the pilot file system was changed to ensure higher cross-compatibility, as it did reset the progress for all my campaigns. Then again, I'm clearly insane.

Admiral Ralwood, I will try deleting the .csg file and see if that works together with the mod.ini.

Just as a thought...

I asked a while ago if the campaign wiki could be updated as there were missions on there that could either no longer be found or just plain didn't work anymore (please don't ask me which ones). But with this WIP, wouldn't it be worth updating the wiki as you go a long.

I was given a password to do it, but I decided not too as I have not been around long enough, or know enough about all the campaigns to do it and I would probably turn it into FUBAR. It might be worth creating an extra column on the wiki page to state whether the campaign works with the latest MediaVPs or not (or which the latest VPs are which the campaign can work with).

I mainly played only the voice acted campaigns on the wiki as I cannot focus on text as I am shooting stuff. As it goes, I did go through BP:WiH without voices, but I think I've lost out on a lot of key text/story as a result of concentrating too much (yeah... a bit keen i knoes).

Hey Gee1337,

Your suggestion was actually a thought both niffiwan and myself have already thought and briefly talked about. Right in this very thread. In my humble opinion and not disregarding the work of all the people updating it, the wiki is pretty much in shambles right now, when it comes to reliable campaign information.

In regards to this campaign list, progress is unfortunately rather slow right now, as I am the only one at the moment working on the list in my spare time, which - to add insult to injury - was recently greatly reduced by new work shifts. Ugh.

That's the reason why I didn't want to grasp too far at this particular point, as getting involved with the Wiki right now while still merrily testing would simply be too much for one guy to handle. If it was simply firing up a single mission and be done with it, the list would be finishable on one weekend. It's not as simple as that though.

Speaking of which, if you do know any campaigns that could be added to either the working or broken campaign list, please feel free to let me know. I am an high spirits that our knowledgeable board wizards and campaign restorators will look into anything hat lands on the red list.

Actually, that goes for anyone lurking around here. Yeah, I'm talking to you, everybody reading this. ;)

Quote from original post.
"Oh and then then there's also some working but loose VPs flying around in my fsport folder dated mostly back to 2006: (Not sure what to do with and how to list ancient vps without a mod.ini for now)

Alliance Returns
Battle for Altair
Duke Squad
Hellwolf
I-Dimen
Internal Conflicts
Mc Carthy Campaign
New Beginnings
Nubian Campaign
Ross128
Second Vasudan War
SotVW (something of the vasudan war?)
Spec Ops
The Counterstrike
The Road to Victory
WAR
Wolfpack Legacy"

If you follow the same directions as for Tango these all should work.  I took all of them and threw them in a campaign file called "FSPort campaigns" with a single mod.ini for the bunch

Something weird happened when I tried to play "The Road To Victory."
With "Tango", I followed previous instructions and after putting a mod.ini in Tango's folder, Tango showed up in the mod list when I used wxlauncher.

However, when I did the same thing (put a specific mod.ini in the campaign folder) after downloading "The Road To Victory", TRTV didn't show up in the mod list in wxlauncher.

On the other hand, when I made a "FSPort campaigns" folder and put that special mod.ini and the TRTV vp file in that, I was able to play TRTV that way.

EDIT:  Nm, I was scrolling too quickly through my mod list.  It was alphabetically listed under "R" rather than "T".  I found it.

Hey Sarkoth,

I did notice that but from what I read, I felt it was a bit unclear as to what was working. SMOD Redux for HL2 has swallowed me up at the moment, but after I've done playing that (should only be another night at most), I will start trawling through the campaigns I've got to see which ones work and which ones don't, with Media2014. It will most likely be the case that I will only go through the voice acted campaigns, but hey, it will be a start.

There are a couple of voice acted campaigns which I did not play, which were the Vasudan based ones, as they did not appeal to me. Whereas I am sure that they are fantastic campaigns, I'm sure as many people will feel, it does help to have a personal attraction to them.

What I will do, is work through the wiki again and report on which campaigns I either cannot find, broken, or whatever...

For a start, there is one campaign which I believe was a bisnitch to find... but I cannot remember the name and I cannot find it on the campaign list. I will have a look on my desktop to see if I have it and I will post the name.

EDIT:- I believe that the campaign was "The Centaur Project". I never actually played it, but I believe that it did not need anything special to play as all the models were from the original game and there were no new editions. I also really need to checkout "Shadow Genesis". So these will be on my "to play" list.

EDIT 2:- I've not fully tested it yet, but I had a VERY brief look and it looks as though TCP is working with Media2014. I think it could be nice is some re-visits this campaign just to add some tastier backgrounds... certainly if the first mission is anything to by. Hope this helps! :)

Unfortunately I have been struck heavily with work the last two weeks, so there haven't been any mayor updates. CT27 posted that Stormfront12 might be broken, I cannot verify that right now, but I will get back to it very soon.

Fiddled around with StormFront and WhatIf. StormFront is working just fine, but WhatIf looks broken beyond comparison. I didn't even manage to get it to run at all or to enable it in the campaign menu.

@ CT27 and Macfie, I am in the process of playing all my "loose VP files" from who knows back when to see if they're working like tango does. How about the idea of "rebundling" them into one package with a premade mod.ini (so anyone not having the slightest clue just needs to download and put the bundle into their FS folder). We could call it something like a "FSPort Campaign Legacy Bundle" and Re-Release them like that. Truth be told, I wasn't even able to find DL links for all of them. Apart from the fact that it would be hugely annoying to repost the instructions on how to get them to work a dozen times over in the list. Before doing that I would try to scoop up any campaigns I haven't listed yet as well, to be able put them all into one pack though.

Anyone in favour of this idea? Maybe it could even provide a few new / old things to play for our veterans out there.

@ Gee1337 Thanks for the input, as of now, the Centaur Project is already listed, but not fully tested yet. It's on my list though. Slow and steady =)

Edit: Wanted to test Allied Worlds and Allied Forces, unplayably broken.

Edit: Thread partially overhauled, and I also made a campaign bundle for Tango and all the other single VP fsport campaigns that didn't get re-released by the FSCRP or got any other overhaul. Mostly, because they use retail ships and don't need any restoration whatsoever. The whole package is a measly 18MB. Check it out in the main post.

Played through Transcend recently (like a month or two ago) on MediaVPS3612 and one of the RC candidates (one or two).  Everything worked well enough for me to get through it without errors, I think.
