Title: Installation help, offline installer, prettiest graphics etc.
Post by: Bas on August 02, 2014, 07:12:23 pm
Hiho!

I am using a modem stick and would like to download the whole installer with the updated files so I don't need to re-download it everytime I install FS2.

Also, some info and offline installer for FS2 upgrade project would be nice.

I am using the steam version.

So... What exactly is your problem? You don't know how to install FSU without installer? Just go here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=86475.0) and download what You need. Mixael explained everything clearly.

I don't think FS2 actually uses any registry thing for installation, at the very least, FSO doesn't. As such, I haven't actually *installed* FreeSpace over the past like, six reformats.
All I do is copy and past the entire game folder from the old HDD onto the new one and the game runs just fine.

So, if you don't want to redownload everything, you can just copy and paste the folder. Probably won't integrate with Steam's UI anymore, but I'm not sure if Steam's UI even integrates with FSO launched via the launcher.

If you want to pre-download the files for the MediaVPs, then I think a manual installation is your only option. It's really easy though (basically dragging and dropping the contents of a *.rar file into a folder).

Well, I thought the FSO installer etablishes a connection to a server and downloads the files?

It's probably just like this and current installer won't work without any access to internet. Offline installer IMHO doesn't make sense here, as the instalator would pack all of the files inside. It would be pretty... Heavy file. Instead of this, you can download everything manually.

If you want to copy your Freespace files, go ahead. As far as I know, game will regenerate registry files on the new computer.

Download MediaVPs 2014 from the link I provided before. Also I recommend the newest stable version of FreeSpace Open. You can find it here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=87764.0). You will also need Launcher. I use classic FSO Launcher but I cannot find any download link, but wxLauncher is probably more newbie-friendly :). You can download it here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=67950.0).

If you want to play some mods... Meh, it's obvious that You want :P. The best place to start is Relesed Campaigns Thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70582.0).
...and when you don't know what to play, the best place for you is Battuta's Guide (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=80688.0)

Also it's pretty good to look for the best content yourself. Complete mods without their own forums can be found in Missions in Campaigns forum. Releases have always [RELEASE] in topic names. Bigger mods with their own forums always have releases sticked to the top of the board. FSWiki hosted on HLP is also your friend.

Enjoy :)
