As Hera is finished, it's time to start a new project. This time I decided to make something smaller and much more simple. A post- Capella warship for GTVA, the Naxos. This vessel will be designed as an assault cruiser equipped with 2 bow beam cannons and dorsal missile batteries. I decided to give her similar shape to the Raynor because I assume that both ships were constructed by the same designers using the same technology.

Feel free to comment/criticise. I already have and idea how to make details but any tips are also welcome :D

The shape is a bit generic... It seems well made but it's just not very interesting. Kind of fits in with Aesaar's new BP stuff which has a similar very simplistic design ethos... So if you're going for that, then that's good I guess. Still, if it had a bit more variation across... hell, any of the axes, really, it would be more distinctive, and more visually interesting, more unique and original.
-
BW is right. At the moment, the design looks very close to Aesaar's BP designs (as well as his HTL GTC Hyperion).
I would change the side and top profiles a bit as a start.
-
Yeah. I think I'd "straighten" it and make it look like Hera's relative. It'd be great if it looked reasonably consistent with Hera, "fleetpacks" with identical turrets and similar textures are very useful. Unless you're explicitly planning to fit it into Aesaar's style (a fair enough goal, if you're hoping to get it included into BP GTVA fleet for some reason), you'd be better off with more sharp angles.
-
Thanks for suggestions guys :) Currently I am changing the ventral section where the wings are. I plan to replace them with something different. Maybe a single fin- like thing on the bottom. I like the current shape but it almost looks like a mini-Raynor
-
Which is exactly what Aesaar did with the Hyperion:
Are you sure you guys aren't the same person?
-
...well... and i did liked the Naxos design as it were shown the first time...
-
I love the Naxos design. I think the line flow is smoother than Aesaar's Hyperion, particularly on the rear block. They look closely relatet yet feel different enough.
-
Naxos is basicly a mini-Raynor with two spinal cannons. It was never intended to be anykind of reimagination of reimaginated Hyperion by Aesaar. First incarnation was something similar to Bolitho with addonital cannons. This thing is likely to continue to evolve into some more original design.
HoRnet: I told You - Don't make a mini-Raynor... But You didn't listen :P
-
FINALLY got ****ing P3D.in to work again. Don't listen to Betrayal, man! This thing is glorious! It's got the potential to be a GTVA Bolitho - something which I kind of tried to get across to Aesaar with the Hyperion, but I couldn't really describe my suggestion. Try fattening up that back section and engine block a little, and yeah, do away with those little stubby wings.
Maybe add a wedge thing like the front of the back section connection to the front for the engines? Just shorter, of course. Also, try flaring up the profile of these beeaaaams on the front. They look okay from the front, but it looks silly to to have that wedge thingie dominate the detail inbetween them or leave no circular shapes on the underside bit, given how big the dishes are. In fact, the dishes should get some more detailing to make them look less flat and more nasty-looking. Right now they look like a pair of giant flashlights or really flat engines.
Really man, this the Battlestar/Bolitho thing that the BP GTVA's next gen cruiser needs to be.
-
I honestly wouldn't worry too much about the similarities; if your both drawing from the same inspiration (Raynor) it'll happen and looking at them I feel they're different enough to have their own character (which I imagine will be even more the case when they're finished and textured models). Great minds think alike, end of the day.
I quite like both of them (though I liked the Raynor's design so I'm biased I guess ). Look forward to seeing how this looks later Hornet; feel you've found that balance I really like between a blocky, chunky 'terrans built this' design and curvy, sleek 'high-tech' design. As for Aesaar's btw E, think he's got that armoured look down perfectly (...does their shipyard take pre-orders?...).

For those who are curious about the size of the ship.
Sadly, I see from here that I will have to redesign the frontal beam cannons. They are just too tiny.

Time to show some updates. I added more details to the engines.

I decided to put one spinal beam cannon. It will be an MGreen. I will also add 2 slash- type beams on the sides.

It was meant to be Mini-Taynor, looks cool :D

Hello. Today I would like to present you something different. Effects of my first adventure with mapping and painting (calling this piece of turbocrap a texture is an insult to all texture artists xD)
Of course I am a total retard in mapping so Betrayal had to correct my mistakes.

Hey guys. Today I tested the AO Bake function in Blender to make the texture look less like taken from cartoon. what do you think about it?

Looks a lot like a Harpoon AShM. I quite like it.

I've split out the digression about the Hyperion into a new thread, which can be found here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=88366.0

Update.
I added some electronics and missile launchers. not much but I don't have as much time as I had during holiday :/

Gatling cannons are ready

Very nice work with the Naxos, looks like the mini-raynor is looking more unique.
Also: Gattling Guns, best guns. Nothing says Face****eruper like a Gattlinggun.
-
Yeah. Miniguns. I'm just trying to implement the CIWS from modern warships to Freespace :D We will make a proper weapon for this cannon of course.
The greatest inspiration was of course the USS Arleigh Burke. A destroyer. ;) Definitely an offensive weapon. But I will be also able to carry out defensive operations. Like being a part of a CSG (Carrier Strike Group)
I've made new turrets for the regular cannons. Previous ones sucked hard. Next step will be the beam cannons I guess.
-
Hey Guys. Today I made a decision that I will finish modelling of that thing soon. At the moment I'm working on the turret layout and the last small details. Everything shall have less then 30k polys (without triangulation)
I don't plan to start another model until I finish my (and not only mine :D) previous creations. It's time to grab a paintbrush and add some colours to these things :D
-
Don't get me wrong, but the gatling guns of the Arleigh Burke are intended to be used as CIWS. Sure, they can be used against small boats...but are not to be intended to be used as offensive weapon.
But then again yours is big enough to be classified as offensive weapon :D
Great design.
-
My bad. Phalanx system is used mainly for interception of aerial targets like planes and missiles. That's a defensive role.
By "offensive" I meant the entire ship itself :).
