Title: Unable to run FSO
Post by: mwpowellhtx on August 24, 2014, 04:56:21 pm
Hello,

I downloaded the current ZIP, and RC3 as well, but in either case, I receive errors that my install is somehow corrupted.

I fail to see how, or do not know what else to do. I simply download, and copy to C:\Games\Freespace2. Would be great if an honest to God installer would place it in a more appropriate C:\Program Files\Games, for example.

With either Launcher, or wxLauncher, still happens.

What am I doing wrong? I need to have mod(s) loaded, or something like that?

Thank you...

RC4 is out (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=88178.0), so try that instead.

Can you post screenshots of your FS2 folder and the error message that you're getting?

Installing FreeSpace 2 Open to Program Files or Program Files (x86) (or any of their subfolders) is not recommended. The reason is that Windows Vista and later place certain restrictions on those folders that can interfere with things like troubleshooting and mod installation. However, you don't have to install to C:\Games\FreeSpace2; that's just where the original version of the game was installed by default.

It's true, it's a thing called User Account Control, and installers worth their salt should be done to take that into consideration, mod or not.

I was able to get it installed after all in the "custom" folder. Just don't like littering my C: with a lot of folders, you know.

The problem is not with the installer; it's with FSO's file-handling and the VirtualStore. It is entirely possible to run FSO out of Program Files; it's just not recommended, because it's one more thing that can make troubleshooting people's problems harder.

Also a byproduct of dealing with a game engine that was developed and released when UAC was barely a speck on the Windows roadmap. Yes the engine has been greatly updated, but it's still community-driven and updates, fixes, and enhancements are done purely on a volunteer basis.
