Title: Op:Flashpoint
Post by: aldo_14 on July 19, 2002, 03:41:36 pm
Just got this game yesterday...hard as hell, but fun in it's own way :)

Anyways, the misison builder is really easy to use (albeit at a basic level...I've been muddling with it)... which makes me think - you could potentially make a very cool T-V war mod..  any thoughts?

yeah its an amazing game, dunno about putting Vasudans in etc, you'd need oxygen and a dedicated mod squad, it'd be ard work. Im getting the expansion tomorrow as well :D. Still after you get use to the fact its uber realistic, it gets easier.

Looks interesting - although I only played the demo, I'm saving for some other toys at the moment though (grins widely) so I won't get it just yet.

Yeah...would.  i'm just idly thinking...  could use the desert map I s'pose.  Was a little piqued by the Stargate:SG1 mod being made, which looks neat :)

It'd work if you just had to pretend they were Vasudan :). You could make your own desert islands, theres a prog that lets you make custom islands. Resistance puts ditches, rivers and proper buildings in the game, no rivers in the original. I cant wait for the Merveka tank to be finished by those guys doing this Middle East project.

Aldo, if you like co-operative play, (use gamespy *shudder*) and connect to the 007vet server. They only do co-ops and the clansmen make the experience a lot of fun. You do need a lot of time though as games regularly go on for over an hour. (which makes it just cool)

I don't know, since I never played Ghost Recon.

However, I'm guessing that in Ghost Recon you don't have vehicles ranging from the civilian car all the way to a M1A1 Abrams, T80, Apache, Hind, A-10 Warthog, Frogfoot and having them be an intergral part of gameplay (meaning: you can board and use every single one)

The maps are vast, and I do mean vast.
It's as realistic as you can get, short of actually fighting a war.
You have to experience it.

Ala, i doub tme 56k could handle it :(

BTw, op:Flashpoint is sort of unique, IMo.... it's a bit like a cross between a squad FPS like SWAT or Ghost Recon, and an RTS... basically, you serve as a grunt in a warzone, set across a MASSIVE area (100km squared, according to the manual).

It's really realistic - one shot can kill you, and you have to seek and target your own enemies (there are little helpers like telling you when a target is hostile, but you still have to find 'em)... it's, um, like being in a real war. I spent the first 2 missions totally confused, nearly gunning down 2 or Bravo squad as they were retreating towards my (also retreating) squad from Ruskie tanks :o

Hard as hell, yet strangely compelling.... it's kind of hard to describe, but it's utterly spectacular.  The graphics are crap - until you actually get into the thick of battle :).  The main difference between stuff like Ghost Recon is it's not as 'sanitised'... it's bloody, and violent - sort of like comparing Saving Private Ryan to Commando (or Rambo, etc).   The other thing is that the AI is superb... the untis reacts exactly as you'd expect... running towards enemy units, diving to the ground and firing, and getting up to srint for cover...

It's fantastic, anyways :)

There are some great Flashpoint E-Toys at codemasters.com! One is a shooting range, and another is a top-down shooter, like Tyrian or Raptor, very retro.

normal price (about 50€/50) for both Flashpoint and the first expansion Red Hammer. Teh second expansion Resistance goes at 20 or 30$/€ (I believe it's 19.95 but I'm not sure)

Flashpoint runs fine on a 56k. Ghost Recon is not like Opfor at all IMO. The new island in Resistance is amazing! The Graphics are all updated with 2048x textures and the ground is all bumpy and smooth.

In the Uk, the Gold pack (OP:Flashpoint, Gold upgrade & Red Hammer addon) is £35  in most shops, albeit i found it for £30 in GAME (Near Buchanan Street, Glasgow :D0.  -10% for me student discount (see, there are some advantages to crippling debt ;7 )

Not sure about elsewhere.  Probably cheaper - the UK is a ripoff for pretty much everything.

And we in euroland ridicule Britain for it :p

but serious: £35 for the gold pack seems quite normal since the pound is still worth more than the €/$, so i don't think you got ripped off

Well.... i just think all games are overpriced, really.  Good as Op:F is, I wouldn't have paid more than i did.  Anyways, i paid £27 for it.

In Halifax (the nearest town to me with a branch of GAME) you can go into GAME and buy a lot of budget games for a fiver, then you can go across the road to Games2U and see the same games PRE OWNED for 8 quid! However, they were sellin Flashpoint gold edition for 7 quid, so it can't be that bad.

1 quid = £1

Which is about $1.50 (roughly) I think.

'quid' is slang for £1 sterling (as in 5 quid = £5).  Also Pavarotti = £10 (pavarotti = tenor = tenner = 10) ;7
