Title: 100 years of Cadillac & your car!
Post by: Stealth on July 19, 2002, 07:53:12 pm
Well we've got a thread about the 100 year anniversary for the air-conditioner; but not all nations use air conditioners, so i thought... why not have a thread about something most nations are familiar with:  cars!

I make this thread to honor my favorite car manufacturer in the world:  Cadillac.
Cadillac celebrated their 100th anniversary this year, and over the years they truly have stood out in making breakthroughs in engines, bodys, and new technology, like power-steering, etc.

Cadillac is an American-based company, but their cars are used throughout the world to some extent, although mainly in America.  Below are some 'breakthroughs' in Cadillac

Now you have a brief history of Cadillac, starting from its founding all the way through now!lol, i KNOW that some fool, be it vadar_1 or someone else will post the 'SPAM' image or something similar...  but if we have threads about air conditioners, poems about God, etc.  why not this?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, another reason i wanted this thread, is a few of us... (i can think of a couple) are old enough to drive... in the United States you can get a drivers license when you're 16 years old... i know that in South Africa you have to wait till you're 18, and i don't know about England, etc. but if you HAVE a car, why don't you give some specifications, details, and (if possible) even a picture or two! :)

(if you're not hosted, email them to me and i'll post them)
don't forget the 'lvlshot' tag
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

My car:

1980 Cadillac Fleetwood,
0-60 mph = 10.6 seconds
1/4 of a mile = 17.9 seconds
not too good compared to a Dodge Viper, Porsche 911, or even a regular TransAm, but remember this is 1980, and besides, this engine is pretty powerful (V8)
(i'll upload pictures of my car now in a few days when i get the film developed):

i disagree... it's possible to live with no AC, but it's less possible to live with no car...

you'll realize this once you learn to drive and/or get a car...

i mean, with no AC there's always fans, but without cars, there's what?  bicycles?  F16s?:D

Bah, Stealt's pimpmobile has nothing on my... rusted-out old Jeep... that doesn't start... and doesn't have a working speedometer... or any other display.

Never mind. And no, I'm not going to post pictures. Forget it!

dude, i love Jeeps!  it doesn't matter if your car's all rusted up and all!  my mom was driving my cadillac a few weeks ago and someone ran a red light and went right into her (back left side is destroyed) but i'm getting it fixed, cause the engine, interior, etc. are still in PERFECT condition...

don't be afraid to post your pictures of your cars here!  nothing to be ashamed of...

Considering my scanner's on the busted computer and I don't have any pictures, it'd be tough anyway. Besides, there's little to see. It's an original Jeep body, convieniently painted rust-brown. And it's got wiring and **** all over the inside, because my dad tried to put in a gadget to digitally display all the car telemetry and failed a year or so back, destroying all the dashbord displays...

oh, and you should really try and restore your jeep.  it's not that hard as long as it's (somewhat) new... (at most 20 years old)

I mean if you want to get parts for it and stuff i could help you with that!

you think you are going to have troubles restoring it?  no you're not! (http://www.employees.org/~bmckenna/cad/index.html)... this guy went through so much, it's not even funny! :)

I do on my annual budget. Cars in my family, we buy 'em used, we buy 'em cheap, we drive 'em into the ground. "The Ground" meaning that that's where most of the car ends up strewn over most of the time- particularly when I'm behind the wheel.

there's nothing wrong with that... today my mom drives like a 1985 Lincoln Towncar, and my dad still drives like a 1993 GMC Suburban.  we buy our cars used too!  i bought this caddilac for like 2000.00 (well, my dad bought it :) lol) and it was in (fairly) good shape... i had to do a little work on it, but it runs (ran) fine (until my mom wrecked it)...  my mom had a Toyota that she drove and drove and drove for years until the engine seized up!  (but then my dad bought a new engine for it, and gave it to my grandmother :D )

there's nothing wrong with driving used cars!

if you need any parts for it you need help finding let me know, i may be able to help

Er... rebuilding a car costs about as much as getting a new one, in this case. That's money I don't have. It will run more or less fine for a couple more years, with a few repairs when necessary, and then it'll die. I'm no collector, that's fine with me.

Post by: Stealth on July 19, 2002, 10:41:37 pm
not rebuilding, restoring!

there's a big difference!

rebuilding would mean taking it apart and building it again :D :D lol

restoring would mean fixing what's broken / replacing what doesn't work

And actually, I'm pretty happy with it the way it is. Now the cops can't bother me about speeding, since I can honestly say I have absofrickingly no clue what speed I'm going at.

Yeah, like saying "Sorry Officer, I had no idea how fast I was going, I was too tanked to see what my speedo said." :p

Still, I'm glad to see that this thread has moved on from the Cadillac Company advertisment it originally was. :D

Meh, I'd try not to spend too much on a car (or truck). I got mine new and pretty cheap, I'd rather have a new not so special car than a used "better" car :p

Cars are for getting from A to B. It's not like I sleep in one (every night). Oh, and safety is important given the ridiculously high numbers of retards driving on our roads too:

Driver behind me: Oh look, a car is approaching in the other lane, but I will still try to overtake this car ahead of me because he's only going at the speed limit. I'll be okay.

Me: AAAAAARRGGGHH!!! *brakes* :shaking:

I like manual better;)

I drive a Ford siera Gia from 1990.

And is in damn good shape.

I have this type, but the red strips are black, and is metalic silver. And it is in very good shape, like it's a new car. Drives very good.

oooh the red button eh?

Yeah... i don't know what car they drove in MIB1, it's been a while, but i know (almost) for sure that for MIB2 the Mercedes E 500 was used.

...not sure, but 99.9% sure

Mercedes is pretty proud of it in MIB2... here's a quote from the Mercedes-Benz website:

Quote

The slogan for the E-Class as a car that "can do anything that we can"  In this film, the E-Class flies not only around the corners, but also through the air. Assistance was given by the renowned special effects studio "Industrial Light and Magic," which elegantly mutates the E 500 into a stylish glider. When Agent J presses the red button, the audience can be prepared for a chase of the spectacular kind. After all, a Mercedes with supersonic talent also has its natural place in the fantastic world of MiB.

notice the sentences i have bolded... lol :D

Bleah. Who'd wanna be associated with THAT movie? It was the first one all over again, with less funny jokes. And less impressive toys.

Ah well- so are they trying to suggest the "red button" comes as an option in their new make?

Just for reference, here are the cars they drove in MIB1 and 2 (not sure about either of them, but i'm pretty confident):

MIB   = Mercedes Benz C230
MIB2 = Mercedes Benz E500

and of course... pictures... i have put together some pictures so you can compare cars... MIB 1's car is on the left while MIB2's car is on the right.  Both are Mercedes, but the class type are shown above...
(shown are front, side, back, engine, driver, and interior shots)

See, there's where I can't understand the average car lover. You'd think a guy would love something with dual side rocket/afterburners or a souped-up junk car with a bulldozer's caterpillar treads, but instead it's all these BORING cars that you can BUY. You don't even get an excuse to play with a blowtorch! What's the fun in that?

I don't have a car at the moment but I will have to get one at some point (and learn to drive) and I am really considering one of the larger off-road pickups, although I have not settled on any brand name yet. Although I would buy one of those large 12-wheeler dump trucks without a moment's hesitation if they were not so expensive. :p

Dude you know that means you need to go out side..and meet the one who is going to be your driving instructor. That mean when you get back you have a cold spot on your chair !

I know, I hate going outside, but I probably will unfortunately have to do that once I start going to a university and/or get a job. :( If I must go outside though, I would rather go in a truck of some sort. :D

Here they are... pictures of my 'beauty'

------------------------------------------------------------------
(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/cadillac/caddy1.jpg)

Front of the Cadillac... it's got plastic and stuff on the front, cause i wanted to stop as much dust and stuff as i could getting into the engine, interior, etc.

Close-up of the rear left side, where the truck went into her.

A little further out, so you can see more of the damage.

From the back, you can barely see the 'hole' in the side :)

This is looking from the front left down... you can see the plastic and stuff i put on, and the hole in the side.

Another shot from the rear.

The interior... the 'white' on the black leather seats is the dust catching the camera's flash, it doens't really look that white.

As you can see, most of the interior is in good condition... after 20 minutes of giving attention to the inside (washing leather, etc.) it will look brand-new.

What makes matters worse, is not only did the collision destroy the door and the rear fender, but worse damage, not seen in the picture, include:

i take it in to get it repaired next week... the repair process takes anywhere from 1-2 weeks, and even then it's going to cost small amounts to repair some parts of it... also there's the 'towing' it there and 'towing' it back, which will cost more and more money!
i'm hoping that it will cost overall less than $500.00 (excluding major repairs to the door and frame)

:)

Regards

Umm, hate to burst your bubble but the paint alone will probably be more than that.

I think it's time for another car... :blah:

nope... i'm doing a lot of stuff myself, which will save a LOT of money!  for example my friend owns a body shop and he's painting it for me for free, i just provide the paint..

the '$500.00' i said was for stuff like gas, oil, spark plugs, engine tuning, fixing the leather, etc.

my mom says the same thing:  "i think it's time for a new car"... but i mean, that engine's got like 7000 miles on it, and it runs PERFECTLY... the A/C is in perfect condition, all electronics work well (even after the wreck)  and i happened to get it on a good deal :)

My Mum drives a '97 (i think) R reg Ford Ka mk. II, quite similar to the one shown here.

My dad drives a 2001 VW Passat Estate SE, like the one shown here:

I think my mum will get a new car and give me the Ka when i learn to drive in september... which would be nice.
