Well we've got a thread about the 100 year anniversary for the air-conditioner; but not all nations use air conditioners, so i thought... why not have a thread about something most nations are familiar with: cars!
I make this thread to honor my favorite car manufacturer in the world: Cadillac.
Cadillac celebrated their 100th anniversary this year, and over the years they truly have stood out in making breakthroughs in engines, bodys, and new technology, like power-steering, etc.
Cadillac is an American-based company, but their cars are used throughout the world to some extent, although mainly in America. Below are some 'breakthroughs' in Cadillac
- In 1902 the Cadillac Automobile Company is created!
- In 1905 Cadillac, who produced one-cylinder engine, introduces the new 4-cylinder engine.
(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/cadillac/4cylinder.jpg)- In 1909 The General Motors Company bought the Cadillac Automobile Company.
- In 1910 Cadillac is the first automaker to sell closed bodies.
- In 1912 Cadillac cars received electric starting, ignition and lighting. For this news, the Royal Automobile Club of London awards, one more time, Cadillac the Dewar Trophy. Cadillac is the only one to receive this awards twice from the RAC.
- In 1915 Cadillac introduces its new engine : a V8 water-cooled.
- In 1927 Cadillac introduces the LaSalle.
- In 1928 Cadillac is the first to install security plate glass as standard equipment and the first to design and introduce the clashless synchromesh transmission.
- In 1930 Cadillac introduces its 45 degree V16 engine.
- In 1931 Cadillac introduces its 45 degree V12 engine
- In 1933 a year that is remembered to this day in Cadillacs, which many people still feel is the best year... 1933 series are still well-known today, although rare... SEE MY NEXT POST FOR THESE PICTURES
- In 1943 Cadillac received many awards for its war effort.
- In 1944 Cadillac produces the M-24 Light Tank. Two Cadillac V8 engines and two Hydramatic transmissions are featured in the M-24.
SEE MY NEXT POST FOR THESE PICTURES
- In 1948 Cadillac designs their cars with "tailfins" inspired by the P-38 Lightning fighter plane of WWII.
- In 1953 Cadillac produced the first Eldorado. 532 units were sold this year.
- In 1954, For the first time in the world, power-steering is a standard equipment on all Cadillac cars.
- In 1957 Cadillac produced the new Eldorado Brougham. A revolution in luxury!
- In 1958 the 2 millionth Cadillac is produced...
- In 1959 one of the most famous cars known today, the 1959 Cadillac (which came in many models, including the DeVille, Fleetwood, Eldorado, etc.) and my favorite car of all time...
SEE MY NEXT POST FOR THESE PICTURES
- In 1962 The two and half-millionth Cadillac is produced
- In 1964 The three-millionth Cadillac is produced. Cadillac is the first to develop automatic temperature control heating and air conditioning for automobiles
- In 1965 Tilt and telescoping steering wheels were available, for the first time, on Cadillac cars.
- In 1969 The four-millionth Cadillac is produced on June 19, 1969.
- In 1970 Cadillac equips the Eldorado with th largest car engine in the world, a 500-cubic-inch (8.2-liter) V8 (400 hp), mounted in front-wheel-drive.
- In 1974 Driver and front-passenger air bags are available on all Cadillac DeVilles, Fleetwood Broughams and Eldorados.
- In 1975 Cadillac introduces the electronically fuel injected engines on 1975 Eldorado, Fleetwood, and DeVille models.
- In 1978 Apparition of the "Trip Computer" on the 1978 Seville.
- In 1980 Cadillac introduce the digital electronic fuel-injection "4-6-8" that turn off some cylinders when not necessary. It includes the self-diagnostic system.
- In 1985 Cadillac is the first to introduce the transverse-mounted V8 engine (front wheel drive) on the De ville and the Fleetwood series.
- In 1993 Cadillac introduce its new V8 engine : The NorthStar
- In 1999 Introduction of the first S.U.V. made by Cadillac : The Escalade.
- In September 1999, Cadillac remodels its logo for the 'new millenium'...
- In 2000, Fifty years after its first and only participation, Cadillac was back at the race of 24 hours : Le Mans, France with a new car named "Cadillac Northstar Le Mans Prototype (LMP)" powered by the famous V8 Northstar which received two turbos . The car was made by Riley and Scott (R&S)
- In 2001 - Third participation to the race of 24 hours of Le Mans, France.
- The last Cadillac Eldorado was produced on Monday 22 April in the plant of Lansing (Mi). Less than 50 years since the first Eldorado. His succesor will be the Cadillac XLR in 2003.
Now you have a brief history of Cadillac, starting from its founding all the way through now!lol, i KNOW that some fool, be it vadar_1 or someone else will post the 'SPAM' image or something similar... but if we have threads about air conditioners, poems about God, etc. why not this?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, another reason i wanted this thread, is a few of us... (i can think of a couple) are old enough to drive... in the United States you can get a drivers license when you're 16 years old... i know that in South Africa you have to wait till you're 18, and i don't know about England, etc. but if you HAVE a car, why don't you give some specifications, details, and (if possible) even a picture or two! :)
(if you're not hosted, email them to me and i'll post them)
don't forget the 'lvlshot' tag
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
My car:
1980 Cadillac Fleetwood,
0-60 mph = 10.6 seconds
1/4 of a mile = 17.9 seconds
not too good compared to a Dodge Viper, Porsche 911, or even a regular TransAm, but remember this is 1980, and besides, this engine is pretty powerful (V8)
(i'll upload pictures of my car now in a few days when i get the film developed):
post your pics and cars here!

Thank......you.....?

i disagree... it's possible to live with no AC, but it's less possible to live with no car...
you'll realize this once you learn to drive and/or get a car...
i mean, with no AC there's always fans, but without cars, there's what? bicycles? F16s?:D

Bah, Stealt's pimpmobile has nothing on my... rusted-out old Jeep... that doesn't start... and doesn't have a working speedometer... or any other display.
Never mind. And no, I'm not going to post pictures. Forget it!
-
dude, i love Jeeps! it doesn't matter if your car's all rusted up and all! my mom was driving my cadillac a few weeks ago and someone ran a red light and went right into her (back left side is destroyed) but i'm getting it fixed, cause the engine, interior, etc. are still in PERFECT condition...
don't be afraid to post your pictures of your cars here! nothing to be ashamed of...
-
Considering my scanner's on the busted computer and I don't have any pictures, it'd be tough anyway. Besides, there's little to see. It's an original Jeep body, convieniently painted rust-brown. And it's got wiring and **** all over the inside, because my dad tried to put in a gadget to digitally display all the car telemetry and failed a year or so back, destroying all the dashbord displays...
-
oh, and you should really try and restore your jeep. it's not that hard as long as it's (somewhat) new... (at most 20 years old)
I mean if you want to get parts for it and stuff i could help you with that!
you think you are going to have troubles restoring it? no you're not! (http://www.employees.org/~bmckenna/cad/index.html)... this guy went through so much, it's not even funny! :)
-
I do on my annual budget. Cars in my family, we buy 'em used, we buy 'em cheap, we drive 'em into the ground. "The Ground" meaning that that's where most of the car ends up strewn over most of the time- particularly when I'm behind the wheel.

there's nothing wrong with that... today my mom drives like a 1985 Lincoln Towncar, and my dad still drives like a 1993 GMC Suburban. we buy our cars used too! i bought this caddilac for like 2000.00 (well, my dad bought it :) lol) and it was in (fairly) good shape... i had to do a little work on it, but it runs (ran) fine (until my mom wrecked it)... my mom had a Toyota that she drove and drove and drove for years until the engine seized up! (but then my dad bought a new engine for it, and gave it to my grandmother :D )
there's nothing wrong with driving used cars!
if you need any parts for it you need help finding let me know, i may be able to help
-
Er... rebuilding a car costs about as much as getting a new one, in this case. That's money I don't have. It will run more or less fine for a couple more years, with a few repairs when necessary, and then it'll die. I'm no collector, that's fine with me.
-
not rebuilding, restoring!
there's a big difference!
rebuilding would mean taking it apart and building it again :D :D lol
restoring would mean fixing what's broken / replacing what doesn't work
-
What DOES work???;)
And actually, I'm pretty happy with it the way it is. Now the cops can't bother me about speeding, since I can honestly say I have absofrickingly no clue what speed I'm going at.
-
Well, since you asked... My cars:
- 1992 VW Golf GTI 16V. Still a fun car to drive after 10 years  Bought used -- it was one year old with 12K miles on it. The odometer crapped out about two years ago at 102K miles (164K km), so I figure it's got about 130K miles now (209K km). I never changed the timing belt, and last spring it broke on the freeway, damaging a piston and that cylinder's intake valves (interference).
So I rebuilt the engine :D A hell of a lot of work and money (had to get the cylinders rebored too), but I did it, and felt frikkin' awesome when it started. It now has an annoying oil leak from an improperly installed crankshaft seal  but I still drive it every day and feed its habit. It's red :)
- 1974 VW Super Beetle. This is a WIP :) Drove this every day for about three years, until the engine died (about ten years ago); then I got the GTI. I couldn't bear to get rid of it, so it was in storage until about 2 years ago when I was forced to take it back. I took the engine and tranny out, they are now in lots of boxes. I want to rebuild it -- better, stronger faster. The body has about 200K miles on it, god knows how many engines have been in it. My wife hates it. It's yellow ;7
- 1999 Chevy Tahoe. Mostly the wife's soccer-mom vehicle, but I use it for my frequent runs to Home Depot and the county landfill. It's a requirement of our yuppie neigborhood that you must own either an SUV or a minivan  It's reliable transportation, but it doesn't have the character of the other two. It's gold colored.
previous cars:
- 1974 Ford Pinto station wagon. A truly horrible car. My first car. The engine finally died for the last time in a blizzard; I walked away and never saw it again. It was mostly yellow, with a few frankensteined body parts of other colors.
- 1971 Ford Pinto. Bought for $150 for parts (see above), then I ended up driving it 2 years. An ugly dark green.
- 1974 Dodge Dart. Very boxy, old-lady car, but it had a surprisingly potent 318 (ci) V-8. Given to me by my mom cause she felt sorry for me and my Pintos. Rusted to death. Dirt colored.
-
nice penguin!
a VW Golf 0wns! :D i love standard cars... automatic transmission may be good, but it has its disadvantages too

Yeah, like saying "Sorry Officer, I had no idea how fast I was going, I was too tanked to see what my speedo said." :p
Still, I'm glad to see that this thread has moved on from the Cadillac Company advertisment it originally was. :D
-
Meh, I'd try not to spend too much on a car (or truck). I got mine new and pretty cheap, I'd rather have a new not so special car than a used "better" car :p

Cars are for getting from A to B. It's not like I sleep in one (every night). Oh, and safety is important given the ridiculously high numbers of retards driving on our roads too:
Driver behind me: Oh look, a car is approaching in the other lane, but I will still try to overtake this car ahead of me because he's only going at the speed limit. I'll be okay.
Me: AAAAAARRGGGHH!!! *brakes* :shaking:
-
I love other drivers....
"Hmm I wonder which pedal means 'go'? This one?"
-
"Hmmm, should I indicate here? No, that might help someone else and let them continue safely, and we wouldn't want that. I'd rather make them stop or chance me smashing their driver's side in...
-
"I-95....95? Is that the speed limit? wh00t!"
-
nice post but umm gee cadillacs?
why not tbirds or porches?
-
My all time favorite..
"Oohh, look a busy intersection. Red light? Red means go, right?"

I like manual better;)
I drive a Ford siera Gia from 1990.
And is in damn good shape.

I have this type, but the red strips are black, and is metalic silver. And it is in very good shape, like it's a new car. Drives very good.

Stealth, you must be obsessed.
no one in their right might would care to even post about a car company being 100 years old let alone posting that big timeline thing.
-
So long as he doesn't give up sex, verbal communication, and human contact for his chosen thing, I'm not worried.
Though perhaps I should be, and would be had I never come to this forum.

i'm obsessed a LITTLE with cars...
but if there's a post about an air conditioner being 100 years old, why not about Cadillac :D
what "red Button"?

that picture is not my exact car btw... but it's the identical model (1980 Cadillac Fleetwood) in the same condition... i'm still getting the pics of my car developed, but i'll post them as soon as i get them back
what 'red button'?

I think he's referring to the MIB car's red button. The one that changed it into the batmobile. :)
-
Yep
-
oooh the red button eh?
Yeah... i don't know what car they drove in MIB1, it's been a while, but i know (almost) for sure that for MIB2 the Mercedes E 500 was used.
...not sure, but 99.9% sure
Mercedes is pretty proud of it in MIB2... here's a quote from the Mercedes-Benz website:
The slogan for the E-Class as a car that "can do anything that we can" In this film, the E-Class flies not only around the corners, but also through the air. Assistance was given by the renowned special effects studio "Industrial Light and Magic," which elegantly mutates the E 500 into a stylish glider. When Agent J presses the red button, the audience can be prepared for a chase of the spectacular kind. After all, a Mercedes with supersonic talent also has its natural place in the fantastic world of MiB.
notice the sentences i have bolded... lol :D
-
Bleah. Who'd wanna be associated with THAT movie? It was the first one all over again, with less funny jokes. And less impressive toys.
Ah well- so are they trying to suggest the "red button" comes as an option in their new make?
-

i think they're trying to suggest it doesn't need a "red button"... it's good enough without one :D
-
Just for reference, here are the cars they drove in MIB1 and 2 (not sure about either of them, but i'm pretty confident):
MIB = Mercedes Benz C230
MIB2 = Mercedes Benz E500
and of course... pictures... i have put together some pictures so you can compare cars... MIB 1's car is on the left while MIB2's car is on the right. Both are Mercedes, but the class type are shown above...
(shown are front, side, back, engine, driver, and interior shots)

teenagers --> obsessions --> general -->
girls = boys, clothes, figure, hair, breath, sex
boys = girls, hair, voice, body, breath, sex
(am i missing something?)
but most teenagers are interested in cars... personally my favorite overall are Cadillac, but my favorite CAR is the Transam

Porsche/Ferrari=win
Mercedes/Cadillac=fail

See, there's where I can't understand the average car lover. You'd think a guy would love something with dual side rocket/afterburners or a souped-up junk car with a bulldozer's caterpillar treads, but instead it's all these BORING cars that you can BUY. You don't even get an excuse to play with a blowtorch! What's the fun in that?
-
Yeah, and they'll never leave your garage, either.
Me, I prefer a tank. You don't get all pissy when you get bird crap all over it.

I don't have a car at the moment but I will have to get one at some point (and learn to drive) and I am really considering one of the larger off-road pickups, although I have not settled on any brand name yet. Although I would buy one of those large 12-wheeler dump trucks without a moment's hesitation if they were not so expensive. :p

Here they are... pictures of my 'beauty'
------------------------------------------------------------------
(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/cadillac/caddy1.jpg)
Front of the Cadillac... it's got plastic and stuff on the front, cause i wanted to stop as much dust and stuff as i could getting into the engine, interior, etc.
------------------------------------------------------------------
(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/cadillac/caddy2.jpg)
Close-up of the rear left side, where the truck went into her.

A little further out, so you can see more of the damage.
------------------------------------------------------------------
(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/cadillac/caddy4.jpg)
From the back, you can barely see the 'hole' in the side :)
------------------------------------------------------------------
(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/cadillac/caddy5.jpg)
This is looking from the front left down... you can see the plastic and stuff i put on, and the hole in the side.
------------------------------------------------------------------
(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/cadillac/caddy6.jpg)
Another shot from the rear.
------------------------------------------------------------------
(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/cadillac/caddy7.jpg)
The interior... the 'white' on the black leather seats is the dust catching the camera's flash, it doens't really look that white.
As you can see, most of the interior is in good condition... after 20 minutes of giving attention to the inside (washing leather, etc.) it will look brand-new.
What makes matters worse, is not only did the collision destroy the door and the rear fender, but worse damage, not seen in the picture, include:
- metal cut into left rear leather seats;
- door frame and other parts of the rear left part of the car are bent inward into the left rear wheel.
- i'm going to need a new left rear wheel
- rear axle is bent
- body is out of line, requiring some big machine to stretch it back 'in-line' (since the car hit from the left, it pretty much 'zig-zagged' the car on a very small scale... you can see this SLIGHTLY if you look from the top.
- glass is all over the seats and carpet, which is going to require a professional clean to get it all out :(
- driver door won't open because entire frame on the left side is bent
- after all this time it being sitting in the garage (about 3 or 4 months) the engine is going to need new oil, i'll have to empty the gas-tank (i actually think the wreck made a whole in it, but i'm not sure) and of course the battery is 100% dead (i disconnected it to help the engine) and i may need the entire engine checked, and of course minor things may need to be replaced, such as the fuel line under the car, spark plugs, etc.
- repainting the whole left part of the body once it's repaired, so i may as well repaint the whole car (not only will that take time, but also money!)
- numerous other 'minor' issues, (such as pumping the tires back up, etc.) and some 'major'... though not THAT many other than those listed above
i take it in to get it repaired next week... the repair process takes anywhere from 1-2 weeks, and even then it's going to cost small amounts to repair some parts of it... also there's the 'towing' it there and 'towing' it back, which will cost more and more money!
i'm hoping that it will cost overall less than $500.00 (excluding major repairs to the door and frame)
:)

Umm, hate to burst your bubble but the paint alone will probably be more than that.
I think it's time for another car... :blah:

nope... i'm doing a lot of stuff myself, which will save a LOT of money! for example my friend owns a body shop and he's painting it for me for free, i just provide the paint..
the '$500.00' i said was for stuff like gas, oil, spark plugs, engine tuning, fixing the leather, etc.
my mom says the same thing: "i think it's time for a new car"... but i mean, that engine's got like 7000 miles on it, and it runs PERFECTLY... the A/C is in perfect condition, all electronics work well (even after the wreck) and i happened to get it on a good deal :)

I think my mum will get a new car and give me the Ka when i learn to drive in september... which would be nice.
