This month's theme: FEAR
It's 2014! That means a new screencap season! We're going to do things slightly differently this year. Our many campaigns are filled with emotional ups, downs, and/or lackthereof. So let's highlight that with a whole year's worth of emotional themes. I don't care what's in the image as long as it portrays the particular feeling for the month (and is captured from in-mission).
Screencap Scoreboard:
Ckid - 2
Mpez - 3
AndrewofDoom - 1
tnathan475 - 1
The Hound - 1
Betrayal - 1
Remember to check out the Wiki article (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Screencap_Contest) for tips on how to capture the best screen!

What is that even supposed to be? A Orion blended with a Demon?
-
You're Out Of Time.
That's brilliant. I thought about doing something similar with the Lucifer, but that's way, way better than anything I could have done, and I'm adding the picture to my collection. :)

Well, time to step up! I've been looking for the theme describing best situations throughout FS history, and so it is.
"... by the time of the Great War.
Shivans came. They are enemy unknown. A threat to all living species. They came for Vasudans. They destroyed them, glassed their planet. Now the are coming for us.
~Entery from unknown lieutenant, GTD Bastion"
"Earth was helpless at the time, exposed. Their doom, our doom was coming... and nothing could stop it. SD Lucifer was an invincible warship, with weapons and defences unseen to this date, ship that moved around and through our forces, like they would be nothing, like a wall of paper. Terran homeworld - Earth, was doomed." - though the admiral as he hurried all of his crew to extends of their limits. Scientists found the way how to stop this monstrosity, the Lucifer. And the Bastion was the only ship able to stop them in time. It was only a one chance... there was no room for failure.
Everyone onboard was terrified... they all had families on Earth, their homes... their cradle... all was about to be destroyed, and there was almost no possibilities of striking back... that what was killing them most... inability to stop it. Their fear was even greater then their anger, what if... Bastion will not make it in time? What if Lucifer arrives in Sol before they can intercept the shivans?
The ultimate question was shadowing everyone, every person onboard the Orion as it struggled through subspace, inbound for the Sol jump node, their reactors pushed to the limits... strike wings equipped with the best they could....
All their effort was in-vain. Quick scan indicated that Lucifer was already at the node.... too far for Bastion to reach it in time... It was too late...
In act of desperation... the bite of cornered rat, they launched everything they got, in hopes... that Fighters might reach the ship in time, and save our race from the impending doom.
They cut through shivan wings like a hot knife though butter. They could not allow themselves to be stopped. Their mission was far too important to fail it... all of the Terran race survival depended on these few fighters capable of subspace travel through jump nodes. They done it.... they arrived at the node... a grave moment... did the Lucifer arrived in Sol by that time? There was only one way to check.... they followed the great nightmare into subspace....
And there he was, vunerable... can it be stopped in time? Can our very lives be saved? Can we confront the nightmare of the shivans, and overcome it...?
--------------------------------------
and that was for my 2 screenshots. Well, im not even sure if such an extended background is even permitted here, but honestly, I have no real idea how one can inspire the feeling of fear with just a bare screenshot... FS isn't suited to do that... so i thought a bit of backstory can add to the meaning of the months theme.

I do belive that is a Deimos on the foreground.
-
Oh, I can see now. It's just the darker lighting on the front of the Deimos made it hard to see. Curious as to where that screenshot is from, though, if it's from a campaign or anything. I vaguely remember a Shivan destroyer chasing something through subspace :V
-
"Homesick" I'd wager.
-
Yeah, it's from the final subspace mission of Homesick. Years ago I had a bug that put the light in subspace missions to 0 and I thought it looked really cool with the Demon in pursuit only visible by its glowmaps.

Love this.

Ahah, knew it. Thanks.

TheHound's are great screenshots but I don't think they fit the theme of the month unfortunately :(
-
TheHound, something I've learned about these screenshot competitions (correct me if I'm wrong mjn) is that these screens need to basically stand on their own, so writing up stuff about them or trying to tie one contextually to another are not going to help any in terms of winning the contest. I'm not entirely sure, but I also think picking out a moment from a specific campaign doesn't help either. It has to truly stand alone on its own merits as a screenshot. Which is very fair when you think about it, or showing a shot from a campaign he's played would have an advantage over one he has not. The screenshot has to tell its own story. When he judges them, he simply takes the shots and looks at them one at a time, no writing has any involvement.
But don't get me wrong, I truly did enjoy what you wrote and your screenshots, especially the first one. I'd be genuinely interested to see more like that. I'm just trying to help. :)

That pretty much explains it. To assure, I'm not taking anything to myself, I know that could be screwed up pretty good (in term of possibility of contest winning), regardless, lets say.... art for art? I'm not that really keen on winning the contest :)

That's more or less true, but we are all here for Freespace. It's almost a right of passage to know and understand the context of those two screenshots.

QFT. Also, you can probably get the feeling without knowing the context.
And also also... Dayum! This thread is full of winning shots.
-
I feel like these both could have been executed better, but I lost interest, if I'm honest.

Ancient Ravana below surface level? Cool!

Shades of B5 "Messages From Earth".

Those are super badass!

Oh man, this is my month; few know why. In the mean time, this is a screenshot of a screenshot (thank you google image search); it qualifies.
I bring about the forgotten carl, who's a shivan. And his last escapade in june 13, 2007. He has since disappeared. I was tracking his where abouts for a while. I will have separate thread on what the curious monster was up too in a bit. For now, Rick James everyone

I also have a previous entry (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=86994.msg1742795#msg1742795) that would have fit very well for this month, but I would NOT like to include it in October's contest. Re-entering previous entries strikes me as cheese.
