Title: Youtube is going Big Brother on me, Halp!
Post by: InsaneBaron on November 04, 2014, 09:23:41 am
Something weird just happened.

I have two computers, a desktop an a laptop. Two nights ago I was watching an hour-long Youtube video on my desktop. I watched about twenty minutes of it, then quit.

Last night, I got on my laptop to watch some more of the video. I was pleasantly surprised when the video started at the place I left off; I'm aware this has been an handy feature on Youtube for a while.

Then it hit me. This had never happened to me before. I started the video on my desktop, but now I was on my laptop, yet the video progress had carried over. Youtube had realized that my desktop and my laptop were used by the same person.

To the more tech-savy members: How does that happen, and do I need to be worried about it?

Were you logged into your youtube/google account? Because that's the explanation for it.

I don't have a youtube account... but in both cases I located the video by google search, and I do have a google account. That might be it.

Yes, it goes with the google account. Especially if you use Chrome, it knows. It knows EVERYTHING. Seriously, today I opened google maps to get a gps location and I got to the directions thingy. In it, it suggested as places my HOUSE and my PLACE OF WORK. I have told it nothing of the sort, but it KNOWS!

If you have an android phone, have GPS and mobile data on then that would probably explain it as home and work will be the two places you visit most.

I didn't say I didn't know how it got the information. I expected it long before I bought the tablet. Thing is, it did so without quering me at all.

The creepiest thing by far I've encountered was when I created a UPS account.  As identity verification (because we just can't have ANYONE seeing the tracking for my packages), it asked three questions about some INCREDIBLY personal information that to my knowledge I haven't EVER given out or associated with any kind of account.  Which address did I previously share with [my dad's full name], what high school did I graduate from in 2006, and I forget the last because I was already creeped out too hard.  It was multiple choice, and yes, the correct answers were there.  It got this **** from my goddamn name (not even full) and address.

It's the Information Age.  Information's coming out my goddamn walls!

Everything chrome and android seems to be connected nowadays. It saves the point in the video where you stopped watching and links it to your account. It's hardly the most nefarious thing that Google tracks. Netflix does this too.

I've avoided using YouTube outside of private browsing ever since I noticed it was recommending videos based on what I'd already watched. Privacy issues aside, I just don't really want the stuff I do to waste time following me around like that.

Seeing some of the connections that Google makes when you browse the web while logged into your account - especially if using Chrome - is why I don't stay logged into my Google account or use Chrome.

Hehe, there's a reason why I usually favor the underdog almost always when I have a choice. They just tend to cause less security vulnerabilities or are less interested in your private data.

Facebook I always use in a private window. Yeah, it doesn't stop much of the tracking they do, but it does stop some of it. If somebody sends me an interesting link through Facebook, I may actually censor the FB added crap from the URL. Or try to find the same link with Google search.

Using Opera as a browser seems to have worked for me. I don't have a Google account and do my email instead with a 15 year-old address that has probably already been removed from the spam lists already.

Jolla mobile phone Sailfish OS is surprisingly well separated from Android as well though it can actually run Android apps. So far it has served me well, on top of that I can actually kill the internet and GPS, and trust that they also stay dead until I say so. I can actually open the Facebook with similar private window setting as I can with a computer if I need to. Then again, I rarely need a web connected phone in Finland (and that Facebook with a mobile phone is indeed a gimmick), but it's handy with bus and train schedules in Southern Finland. When driving cars in Northern parts, I don't need maps or navigation.

But it is annoying that YouTube still seems to be attaching some kind of statistics for the channel preferences; if I look for 90s music, that **** is visible in every YouTube recommendations for next three days or so. Can't imagine what it would feel like if it connected my work and civil life computers.
