So I got 3d MAx 2012.
It seems to have a lot more options when it comes to UV mapping. Including a "Pelt" option.
As some of you may know, UV mapping complex models is my mortal enemy. Normally I do it by making planar projection of specific parts and assembling them onto a 2D plane to draw over and make a texture.
This is a time-consuming process, but it works.
However, this method is redicolously impractical on high-detail models.
I tried some automating tools, but the results were awful.
So, I ask this - my HD Archangel model is still sitting on my HDD. I didn't release it because I wanted to give it a proper texture job and NOT resort to tiling.
Can anyone give me a hand with making the UV map (I can make the texture myself, it's the maping that's killing me)

The pelt option in 2012 is more for organic shapes rather than mechanical vehicles. It can work but i have had some weird results. Sometimes sadly it has to be done the hard way and done by hand but the projection section of unwrapUV is your friend with planar, cylinder, box and spherical projection. Also when in the editor making your selection of faces and then using the Unfold mapping option and produce good results.
There are programs like Ultimate Unwrap 3d http://www.unwrap3d.com/u3d/index.aspx but in 98% of the time you will need to do it manually at some point. Digital Tutors has some good tips on it. Also I was utter rubbish at it myself but i have stuck down and just kept doing it the hard way and doing all by manually. It does take a long time and is a pain but it does pay off.
