Hahahahaha! You have to turn your computer off during a storm? Hahahahaha!
-
Yes an0n, most people do because they don't want a pile of ash to replace thier processor/expensive expansion card/etc
my advice: Try rebooting a couple of times manually... but from the sounds of things your processor is dead. (Trust me i was in this situation a few months back : Hard disk light on, no activity, no POST or even flash on the screen. it turned out that the processor had literally burnt out.) :(

Pfff. I've used my computer in heavy lightning and nothing's ever happened. And I live in high-ish ground. In some of the dampest weather in the world.

I almost live on the lowest part of the world... The Netherlands... Its also VERY flat.

a friend of mine lost her hard drive thanks to a storm. Had to pay the specialist 700 crowns (about 60$) to recover the My Documents folder, plus the cost for a new one.
Not pleasant. Especially when you got a lot of unarchived important **** on your HDD

See, this is why I'm buying a ton of spare hard-drives and some HP SureStore thingies. Once a Hard-drive gets full, don't bother deleting anything, just fit a new one. Then I'll back up all the important stuff onto one or two SureStore 60Gb carts.
-
of course, that is a lot more easy for people, whose monthly salary (or parents monthly salary for that matter) isn't 8 times the price of the hard drive.

A lot of the time this is due to forgetting to disconnect your modem from the wall socket. Telephone lines are just as capable of carrying the computer killing surge that well... Kills your computer. I usually switch my computer off during a storm but they don't last very long here and we rarely get fork lightning.
Try swapping out some of the components from another computer if you can. You might only need to replace the processor.
Bad luck :(
