Title: The guest

The time: year 2334
The place: a remote mining station in the east border of the GTA, Laramis system
The crew: 1 headmaster, 1 tech engineers, 1 pilot class 4, 3 pilots class 1, 1 medic. And a "guest".

At 11.22, day 348, local time, a silent radar station checking for Vasudan marauders detected an unusual signature near the Edingway asteroid prospecting station. Without any military patrol available, the crew is ordered to check by themselves. They discover a large, black object and bring it back to the station. The artefact is sealed in the quarantine room. The night that follows, a breach is detected in the ejection tubes of the rescue pods room. Something has come to claim back the artefact...

I did the closest of what they really look like. It may not be that great, but I really have added nothing, it's the way a shivan is supposed to be, as far as I know
And as this one's the only one I know of apart from the V one, well ;7

little lesson of shivan anatomy. Obviously it's nowhere near perfect. It's too skinny, the shoulder gun is incomplete, I haven't even done the power claws, various parts are just stuck together w/o any care about intersections or anything, and some articulations are just not there. But it's a first try, so... I think making it from LPM is not the best way, next time, I'll try splines.

Good work!

A little off topic:
Say; do any of you know where i can get some concept-art of Shivans (not their ships), I cant seem to find any...

Back on topic:
Nice work all around! :)

there, I'm nice, here's the mesh and the map I used ( most are procedurals save for one, which sucks, btw ). Too bad for LW users, it's in .Max format ( not in .3ds so the procedurals aren't lost ). Feel free to use/modify it, just don't forget to give me credits for the original thing ;)

yea it looks a bit starved... but ... but ... :jaw:

on the other hand... no wonder they look so good :p

hmm... maybe I'd prefer the second one... add a bit motionblur to it... then it looks like the POV is from the eyes of a dying soldier

First one was probably best. Increase the specularity on the casings a lot, so they look like metal.

First is the most menacing one, so i'd go with that one..the eyes, wouldnt red be better than orange? or is it just me...(maybe my monitor is screwed up too and they already are red, i dunno).  Good job venom, very very impressive indeed.

On another matter. Does anyone here notice the similarity between Shivans and that weird species from startrek?  The one in the voyager series?

You mean 8472?

Wow ;) Just a little stockier and you got it.

I'd make the eyes blood red though, the orange just doesn't look quite as menacing.

The second lighting test I think looks the best, the grating lighting on the pipes on the top of the corridor I'd make a lot smaller and I'd add grit on the pipes plus some lights.

The second one's lighting is a lot closer to the FreeSpace cutscenes in style, IMHO.

the eyes are the same colours than the ones you see in the cutscenes.

I think it looks better that way, anyway. Looks like glowing coals, sorta.

Apparently most people haven't seen this... I found this Shivan model on my hard drive and had no idea where it came from.

*has a thought*

Y'know. That might not be a Shivan. Seen as their ship was being invaded, they could sent their automated security thingies to go annihilate the Terrans. Wouldn't surprise me if the FS story arc was originally intended to end in a Wizard of Oz type situation.

Anyway.............

That can't be right because Volition went on record saying that the things we saw in the Hall Fight cutscene in FS1 were Shivans. People thought, way back when FS1 came out, that they were automated robots and not real Shivans, but [V] said they were Shivans. It's official canon.
