I've recently been on a bit of a resurgence of interest in WWII warfare and as always, in flight combat.
A long time ago when I was much younger, games like Aces of the Pacific and Aces Over Europe consumed my time. Sure the sound was bad, the graphics were low detailed polys, and smooth shaded polys made my 386 25mhz cry in anguish but damn was it fun.
Microsoft has a new Combat Flight Simulator 3 coming out and it looks pretty dang spiffy (have a look: http://www.microsoft.com/games/combatfs3/)
I'm just wondering if anyone has played any of the previous versions. I want to know how easy it is to jump in and play. I also want to know if the realism settings are adjustable. I don't mind some realism, but I'd rather not spend three hours flying over the English channel to get shot down by the first FW190 that finds my tail. Infact, I'd rather be able to take off...pull up the landing gear, hit a key, get to my target area (or get intercepted) and then go home and do it in 10-20 minutes.
So I want to know what previous versions were like and if this game is for me?
-
I have the first two.. I'll probably get this one as well

Well, Combat Flight Simulator 2 was ok. You could pritty much blow anything off the plane, or even blow it to bits. The action was good and stuff but it doesent beat Janes WW2 Fighters. Now I don't know about CFS3, it looks to be a real winner. But the previous games were more on the arcade style. But still fun.

wasn't fighter ace II really the beta for CFS3?
-
I miss Strike Commander

Ok...so how would a mission play out? I don't have three hours to spend crossing the channel.
Is there an easy navigation system and time compression? If I want to lighten the load a bit, can I just jump into my campaign and have fun? Or do I have to spend 10 minutes setting the radio frequency and adjusting the trim before I get off the ground? :D
-
Yeah there is. You could fly over the channel if you want if I remember correctly, but you can also click on auto pilot that'll get you there faster.
And hey, I got Strike Commander on CD! :D Still a rather sweet game.
-
Ahhh nice. So does autopilot "warp" you there or does it just compress time a bit and the sky shoots past very quickly?
This sounds promising!
-
Anyone know? How does autopilot work? How quickly do you go to and from a target. I'm really interested in this mission structure and so far nobody and no website talks about it at all.
