Title: Know that excellent CGI of Mad Max's flame thrower guitar?
Post by: Grizzly on May 18, 2015, 03:15:46 am
Well.
It's not CGI (http://www.mtv.com/news/2161513/mad-max-fury-road-guitar-player-doof-warrior-colin-gibson/) :D

I need to see this movie.  I'm not sure I've lived until I've seen cars bursting into flame inside a giant dust tornado being struck by lightning.

That's the only CG scene in the movie.  Everything else is practical effects.

I watched Mad Max for the first time today in prep for eventually seeing the new one.  I must say, it really wasn't very good and not much like I expected.  The 'plot' did a really poor job even of providing an excuse for "crazy people (done poorly) and motor-themed murder".

Are the other two pretty much the same?  Cuz I might not bother.

the second was so different it wasn't even called 'mad max' when it came out

Yeah, 2 and 3 were far better movies!

Road Warrior is still the best Mad Max hands down. Fury Road was kinda disappointing...

Funny enough I actually like the original the most out of the first three.  Road Warrior is quirky, violent and awesome but I personally liked the "subtly ****ed up society still trying to hold on to civilization" vibe of the first Mad Max than the full on chaps and hockey masks.  Max himself was a microcosm for the whole situation, as a MFP Officer he was exposed to the raggedy edge were civilization was giving way to the madness.  Though he wants to hold onto the facade of normalcy events eventually force him to succumb to the madness.

Fury, I have the utmost respect for your character

But do not listen to this, it is wrong.

See, if I hadn't been told ahead of time I wouldn't have even known it was supposed to be a sort of post-apocalyptic type thing.  Just watch the movie, without any kind of synopsis beforehand, and it's just a biker gang with some insane members against a local police force.  The biggest hint on the "breakdown of society" thing is that the halls of justice is a bit run down.  I just read the synopsis google brought up and literally NONE of that was explained by the movie.  Hell, that's the first time I saw what MFP stood for.

Well gee, thanks. Opinions and all.
Spoiler:
The only part where I smiled or even chuckled a bit is when Nux boasted he'd kill Furiosa, goes to climb onto the tank and then stumbles, almost falls off. Bossman cries how mediocre. Which pretty much summarized the whole movie to me and was the sole reason I smiled and chuckled in the first place. :sigh:

Watched Road Warrior.  Much better.  Still a few moments of plot cringe (and visuals - did we really need that many man thongs and assless chaps?), but about what I expected from an 80s movie.

Saw Fury Road yesterday.

Can't say much about it, except that I was completely blown away by it. There's been a few really good action movies in the past few years, films like Dredd or John Wick or Snowpiercer have raised the bar considerably, but none of them come close to the insane, frenetic glory of Mad Max.

Just saw this.  Did the 3D thing because I thought this would be one of those rare movies where the 3D actually works and adds something, like with Dredd.  I was wrong.  Would have been far better without.

As for the original topic, I'm a little disappointed there wasn't more of the guitar throwing fire.  Or being played..... well.  I was expecting to hear some shredding.

You can.  The soundtrack actually incorporates it.  Whether you actually realize that while watching, well....

Oh I heard it.  What I meant is that it wasn't terribly good playing.  I was waiting for the face melting solo, but all I ever heard was a few growly chords.

you know it's funny, there wasn't much CGI but when it was present it was poorly done and jarring, especially in comparison to the amazing practical effects. Like that bug that was crawling on the one girl that the one guy ate, or the crash at the end with the guitar and the steering wheel.

The crash I believe was more a result of shoehorning in a shot meant to be impressive in 3D (it wasn't).  It seems most movies these days that will have a 3D release have at least one such scene with something popping out at the audience.

I think part of the problem is theaters trying to stay relevant in the days of the internet.  BiG 3D features seems to be one of the technologies they are banking on, so a lot of films have it shoehorned in as Klaus mentioned.  To be honest though even films that were built skids up to take advantage of it, and were its actually well implement always seems like after the initial ooh and ahh your brain stops noticing the 3D anyway.

I need to see this movie.

Don' t bother.
Tom Hardy is a good actor, but it was bad.

Unlike the movie, this opinion is bad.

It was about what I was expecting, it's not an experience that will leave you changed for the rest of your life like some people are acting like it was, but it's an alright way to spend a few hours.

It's probably one of the best action movies ever made.

You utterly failed to pick up the subtext and plot of the movie, I'm sorry to say.

It's definitely there, you just won't see it if you go into it expecting to turn your brain off.

8.7/10 sounds about right, I guess it's just really obvious, no one straying far from that, hence the 98%

We're not being mean to Jammer for not liking it.  We're being mean for saying it's bad.  Which it isn't.  Everyone is allowed to not like things, even if they are good.

So.... no.  Plus it's in good fun, and Jammer seems to have gotten a laugh out of it.
