Title: Help Wanted: Campaign WIP needs Testers
Post by: NeonShivan on June 22, 2015, 10:23:47 pm
Hello!

I need some help, help that will hopefully avoid creating another monstrosity of a mod again. I will not go into details as to what the mod is until either A. You accept, or B. I decide to actually share information. The type of help I need is relatively simple for I am no Spoon, I cannot design an awesome, fun, relatively decent mod on my own. Here's the expectations if you do agree to my proposal:

*Testing: You will be testing a set of missions, 5 missions per "chapter". They're relatively short, standard Freespace length (as they should be).
*The Dos and Donts: You will be telling me, the modder, what should or shouldn't be in a mission. What doesn't make sense story wise, what doesn't add up etc. You're also balance testing. At the moment the missions are designed to be played at a Medium level, but I wish to eventually balance it to be played at levels up to Insane. (I'm not that good, and neither is my friend so I need skilled players or vets for that).
*Other: If you wish to aid in the mod in other endeavors, for example visual art is not my cup of tea (or art in general, surprisingly), aid in that category is greatly appreciated but not required.

The "chapters" will be completed at random intervals. Testing can be done on your own time. I will tell you which missions to test, which not to test. This mod is also a WIP! Expect crashes, glitches, and various issues. Also frustration, but hey, you're the tester, you're supposed to tell me these things  :P.

If you do not wish to help, ignore this topic all together.

Thank you!

Everyone uses testers, man. Needing testers does not make you some kind of second class designer. Spoon hangs out with Axem and sniper and me and bounces ideas off us, Axem beta tests his mods with his test krew, everybody has a community.

Have you thought about sticking your missions on a small SVN so you can push updates to your testers quickly? It's easy.

Actually no, I haven't thought of it. I normally just use dropbox or something to send it to my friend who test stuff for me.

EDIT: Re-worded to make it sound less rude, sorry.

How big is your modpack, filesize-wise? If it's small I have an idea for you.

Depends on what you consider small for a mod pack.

That's why I'm asking for the filesize.

That's why I'm asking for the filesize.

When packaged in a .rar it's about 707MB.

Damn yo. Well that's too big for the SVN host I was thinking of. Hm...

Well, you could always distribute the files that aren't expected to change a lot (like models, textures and sounds) in a separate file and use svn to distribute tables and missions.

Mediafire: https://www.mediafire.com/ (https://www.mediafire.com/) is reliable method of filesharing, you can easily upload a modpack that big up there.

It's good for saying 'here is an update, please download,' but having an SVN or some other kind of depot makes it a hundred times easier to work with testers. With SVN, you can update your missions every night - hell, even in the middle of an IRC conversation - and your testers can get those updates instantly with just a click of a button.

Yes, but as you know, svn is not that great when dealing with large binary files. Putting those into an archive on mediafire or dropbox or whatever and using svn to host and deliver missions and tables is a really good idea during testing, when (I assume) you're not updating the models etc a lot.

Yeah, svn is perfect for small things you need to change a lot.

Sounds like a good idea.
