Title: To all MODelers
Post by: Zarax on July 27, 2002, 05:02:27 pm
Hello, would you be interested if you can put all your models in a place where people can easily see and download them?
I'm planning to make a website about your creations, your ships, weapons and installations you are proud of!
If you think it's a good idea just reply here, i will open the site as soon as someone will want to place his ships there.

I don't do models, but that would be an excellent idea.  I fully support that concept.

I would also really like to have a model database of some sort, since it sometimes gets frustrating to go hunting around for models that one hears of; maybe there could be a section for that on the HLP website.

It's just what i want to create...
A site devoted to models, with author, description and instructions for each one...

i asked for that thing some moths ago...
there is some very very excellent artwork that appeared on that forum but that is difficult to see/obtain and has not enough visibility considering the astonishing quality level
buona fortuna!;)

This is the one place in which the FS community falls down. Of the three major sites (FSW, HLP, and F2S0 ironically the smallest one (F2S) had the best selection of mods to download, and was updated the most often. Unfortunately, F2S has been down for the last month, and a lot of people didn't know it was there anyway, so several major mods weren't released there. The VWatch archives are the next best place and while they're big they're hardly ever updated. Finally HLP had the smallest selection of mods, because months ago they simply stopped updating their selection - they were supposed to be creating a new script which would allow them to add new mods in a flash - but this script never eventuated, and the mods haven't been updated since. So badger your local HLP admin for a mod update, or wait for F2S to come back and pimp the hell out of it. :)

But, what about a web site only for models, in direct contact with the MODelers, where you will find everything, from the older ones to the latest MODs?

In theory, you're posting on it...

It's just the mod adding has sucked severely of late.

[edit] Hmmm - that looks odd, but you get the idea.

sounds good :) would be very useful. and it's true f2s had a far larger selection of models than the other two. i had a lot, looked there and about tripled the amount. there were good cruiser/corvette ships there and a lot of aldo's fighters. mabey when it's back more people will know of it. :D

I was talking about ship Models, something wich is only marginally supported here...
What i have in mind is up in another scale...

If they handled the mods right you wouldn't be able to go up another scale from HLP - it's got the biggest community base, and a well established reputation for modding. (Don't believe me? compared the post count on the FSW and HLP Freespace Modding forums. F2S when it comes back up too.) IMO, you'd be better off PMing Shrike and trying to spark some action on the mod handling front. Careful though - I got a topic on the subject locked for no apparent reason...

Kill two birds with one stone. Make your site Zarax and then get it hosted here :)

Not so easy...

1) I need support from some MODelers, maybe someone like Aldo

2) I'm also trying to get my Rise Of GCA campaign hosted by HLP and I don't have received answers still...

Anyways, can you give me links to all good web sites about modeling?

Build the site and people will donate. Look at Skippy's campaign list as an example of that.

I`d offer to donate my models but none are  finished yet. If this site was up when I release ships I`d definately release mine there.

It's a start.
Expect a beta of the web site opening in a few days...

Planned Features Are:

 -Cathegorized Model Database

- Brief Description Screenshots for each model

- Screenshots

- Model author contact list

- (not sure) List of campaigns where each model is used

Just a fore-warning, all this is going to be done here.

That would be great Thunder, can you give us more info about it?

Edit - Hmmm my bad I think. Do you mean this is already being done here and will get finished later, or Zarax's suggested list will be hosted here?

it all already is being done here, just no one is putting their models on it

It's down to a problem of communication and time on the part of the staff. The last time I looked the model database was very close to being able to go live, but there are one or two things to tidy up, I'm not sure what they are but it can be done.

It might certainly be useful! But talk to Shrike about it, I think someone else is also interested in it... see how it goes.
