Title: The Origins Of HLP
Post by: JC Denton on July 27, 2002, 11:04:25 pm
I'm not asking for a terribly long history here, but I don't care if I get one. :D

I'm more curious as to where the idea for the name came from.

How did HLP get its name?
”Hard Light Productions” is a name stemming from the term “Hard Light” - which is basically a light projection that is solid (ie. It can be touched). “A dream given form,”, to appropriate a popular sci-fi series. For us, HLP - the concept behind the website and the community it holds - is a sign of things to come. A projection, a slice of the future.

Very First topic in the FAQ. (it's on the main page, right above the forums link)

There is a little bit of information about the history of HLP on The Array, last I checked.

The VBB, which was Voltion's official bulletin board and the Hub of the Freespace community, started deteriorating due to a lack of moderation and the sheer number of morons FPS games and PS2 games attract. HLP replaced Ross 128 (an older fan site) and the VBB as the central discussion forum for modding, rendering and discussion prompted by the VBB's demise.

I wouldn't say HLP was a replacement for Ross 128, R128 was like VW - a mixed bag of stuff from mods to missions to news and so on. HLP started off with the sole aim of mods and soon after - renders.

Setekh and I originally came up with it over ICQ when we realised that there was a lack of support for the casual modder on the VBB - I think the loss of the VBB really helped HLPs growth as it forced a large user base on us, which made it work well.

And the rest as they say - is history.

And the Warpstorm FUBAR incident caused a lot of new people/lurkers to sign up. And now they've become a seedy underclass used to carry heavy loads.

When, exactly, did the VBB stop existing? Was there some sort of official announcement from Volition to explain this decision? Because now there's just a dead link to the forums in their site.

I think it was about autuam/winter time last year (2001) when VBB closed down, though I'm not 100% sure since I was never a member of those particular boards.

Lies! HLP was actually created by magical pygmies!
Seriously, HLP was open about 2 years ago, right? Geez, I remember coming here and thinking that it was just a newby MODing site, and nothing too special!:D
