Now that I know how to make models, I took Ace's (I believe it was Ace) advise and made it look like we're flying over a region of the earth instead of using an Earth sphere. I must say it does look alot better.

you change it two and don't bump it.. pathetic (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
hmm.. what a strange ship you're flying

It's cool!!
What is that ship that you are flying??

The ship in the 1st pic is the ECF Torus class heavy assault fighter for the Eridanites (this version is the terran flyable). It'll be in the System Madness II campaign.
The ship in the 2nd pic is the GTVB Alchera. It's simply a modified Isis. It'll be in the campaign also. You can download it here ("http://denebsystem0.tripod.com/orn_downloads.html").

How come I cant see the pics (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/confused.gif) do you have the right url? because I cant see them (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

NBCI is acting up... AGAIN (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/mad.gif) . I'll see if I can fix it...

Great ship, even better atmosphere...
Btw, can I have a Hydrowak for my birthday, Joey? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Nice job... dammit, I'm running out of compliments for you guys! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Say... that gives me an idea...

Sure. But I believe that you'd much rather have a Photcannon. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

And don't forget...!

Hmmm...how exactly did you do that?
And more importantly, would it be possible to combine the night and day atmospheres such that as you fly around the planet, you go from bright blue day to dark purple night?

I don't think so. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)
You see, the planet is basically a flat and circular model (not a sphere) with a texture pasted onto it. It has a very low poly count. Also, I don't think that the sun effects would be possible. Although, there is always the idea that you go into a red alert mission after fighting in a day mission and you're briefed by night time. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

It's not spherical? Interesting...

Nope. Just a circular 2-d plane. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I see...so it's essentially a background image that moves slightly relative to the player. I guess flying around that would be kind of wierd, huh? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

It would take too long to fly all the way around... the model is about 30000x30000. The distance in those pictures from the model is about 10000. It's massive.
-
So you CAN reach the surface...I see. Very clever! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Yea. It saves alot of memory too. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Its just a less impressive rip-off of my atmosphere and you know it !
Come on be brave enough and admit its hardly awe inspiring !
This isnt a flaming, but i not going to say its brilliant, when it isnt, whats the point in that?
Joey - decide on your space colour then add some smoothing between planet and atmosphere.
This give the appearance of a atmosphere edge and can be used to remove the corners of the polygon you drew on.
Use MORE THAN ONE texture, otherwise it looks pants - you have to cut and paster like a jigsaw, hard, but worth it...if you cant be bothered at least use 4
(i used 40 on mine)
Before you cut up the picture - BUMP it which a shperical deformation. Gives a better 3D effect cos it is a 2d picture.
The reason i left clouds off it because if i find a way to add them via a nebula atmosphere later the static clouds on the picture would look silly. Still do in my opinion.
And if you want a colour for space
then only use 2 nebula files
blank colour (of your choice) suze 18,18 at 0,0,0
and
18,18 @ 180,0,0
this covers the whole sky. Now do it again.
Your ability to produce good maps for the plant and at the edge atmosphere is as good as your ability with the package you use. I used PSP7 to do mine and this can do it for sure. But it is tricky and takes some trial and trial to get it right. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Good luck with v3

It may be less impressive, but I can assure you that I didn't use any of your idea. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) I started out completely original. It can't be proven but all I can say is that I did. Besides, I couldn't download the other part of your package, remember? So how could I try yours out? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
You've made some good points though. I'm not real good with texturing. I'm still a beginner with this modeling stuff. I can only do UV mapping. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)
Smoothing between the planet and atmosphere would be nice. I believe there is a way with my way of doing things to get it on there. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
I left clouds off in this version because I got advice from Kazan. He says that those pictures would be too high in the atmosphere to be seeing clouds. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
I already know about the 2 background images deal, but thanx for the help anyway. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
I use PSP5. I have PSP7 but I found that it's a bit harder to use than what I'm used to. I don't think there's really anything I need in 7.0 anyway (that I can point out).
BTW: It didn't look totally bad as a single image. Maybe if I could find a higher res picture of earth, then it wouldn't look like pants. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Ok i was peobably a bit harsh there, sorry Joey (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif). Bad day and i was letting off steam !

everybody does that one day or another... that's no big deal I suppose

No prob. No offense taken. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
