Figure this'll help the SCP people to have a general idea of how powerful the average person's computer is 'round here.
This is the CPU thread.
-
AMD 1900+ here :)
-
Celeron 466MHz here
-
"Other..." :p
;)
-
I have a 700 MHz Athlon right now, but I just purchased an Abit IT7 Mobo, a 2.26 GHZ Pentium 4, and 512 MB PC2100 DDRRAM last night. :) They'll be here in like two days. Yay.
-
p4 1.8ghz
-
My Win98 machine is a Celeron 333MHz w/ an integrated ATI chipset :doubt: Nebula missions suck big time, and I can't run hi-res, but it works...
My Linux box is a P3 650 w/ a GeForce3, but it can't run Freespace... yet... ;7
-
P4 2.53 ;7

my linux box is a pentium 200 with an SVGA card :ha:
-
300 mhz Celeron. Will be getting a 2Ghz P4 baby soon enough though.
-
AMD Duron (I think) 1333MHz / 1500+ XP
Isn;t this a bit pointless, though? cos MHZ / GHZ is a bit redundant as a performance measure, 'spesh with the different AMD/ Intel architectures. not to mention the motherboards.
What about a 3dmark ratings poll?
-
Athlon 1.4 underclocked to 1.3 for improved cooling in the heatwave we've got at the moment.
Still runs like a kitten with Photoshop, Freespace and almost everything other than GTA3 or SoF2 on full detail.
-
P3 933 mhz. Good enough, but I want to replace it eventually with a nice Athlon.
-
2 Athlon MP 2100 in a box
or an Athlon XP2200 :p
-
p3 450
:ha:
-
K6-III 450
Freespace is the only thing I can run at full settings!
-
Where does my abacus go on that list?
-
Celeron 466MHz. :sigh:

There is one now, but 3Dmark doesn't tell everything...
-
Duron@1Ghz and Celeron@1116Mhz. Plenty of power for further developments in the Freespace source :)

Parallel? Surely not

K6-2 400
Piece of crap. Hope to get a nice Athlon XP 1800+ or better within the next few months.

Yeah.... 'spesh as it's intended for newer tech. I'd rather have summat like specbench for CPU's, but that costs money IIRC.
-
I want dual processors... a couple of Athlon XPs would be soooo cool.

Separate boxes. You can't get a pair of Celeron 2's running in SMP, let alone this combo :)

suddenly I don't feel as inferior any more :D
Hmm, I wonder if two P4s would work? ;7

Yes, and even for new tech it isn't the best way to measure performance, games are.

No, not normal ones, I think.
-
I just want to say that I'm sorry for anyone who bought one of the K6 line CPUs, since they're the most horrible CPUs to reach the market since the K5 :)
Edit: Well, I forgot the original celeron with no L2 cache. It sucked big-time too

Ever heard of a Cyrix? Now that was crap.
-
Yes yes, their MII processors were total crap, but by the P-II time, everyone knew that they were crap, so noone bought their processors, especially those who fell for their marketing campaign (Intel Inside - Cyrix Instead)

I have one. Not on my machine, of course, but in an old box gathering dust. It's a Cyrix P166 (133 MHz). I think I'll use it to play those good old games like Commander Keen, C&C Tib. Dawn, Aces of the Pacific, Future Wars, etc. :D Oh, and with an ancient Cirrus Logic GD5460 on a 14" screen, for authenticities sake. :D

The K6-2 wasn't too bad, and at the time it was the best i could afford. I put together a halfway decent machine for about $600 and so far have only had to replace the vid card (was an ati rage 128, now is a GF2 GTS) and add a little memory. It has served me well, and i've only had performance issues in the last year or so. Sadly i don't have the money to upgrade yet.

I believe VIA have designed and built a working motherboard that supports P4's in SMP. However it's not a production unit, so the closest thing would be the new version of the Xeon CPU's.

Oh year! Well my linux BOX is a pentium 200MMX, 80RAM with a Matrox Mistique and an original 3dFX card so :ha:
My MEGA BOX is a AMDXP2000+ 512RAM and a 128MB RADEON
My Other Games BOX is an AMD Athlon 1000 256RAm and a 3D Prophet 4500
My Other BOX is an AMD K6-2 450 256RAM with a TNT2 ULTRA
All are linked up through a 100MBps network (well again soon, someone stole my switches!)
If I had 3dmax think of the children... err.. render slaves!
[gloating over, you don't have to feel so inferiour now]
-
My all arround box: AMD Athalon 1.3 GHz, 358 MB DDR RAM, Integrated NVIDIA 32 MB graphics(will get top of the line GForce4 soon), and a whopping 56K Modem!!!
Leave it to me to have so much unused power...

Dial-up sukka.
-
Celeron 1.0 GHz here
Not the best CPU out there but not bad either!
I do believe this is the highest-end Celeron available but I'm not sure

1.3GHz is the highest Celeron you can get.
-
:) Athlon XP 1700+ / GF4 Ti4200

No, 1.8GHz is the highest one, though it's running at the P4 Willamette core with L2 cache reduced to half. And P4, or at least the Willamette core is slower than PIII core Tualatin clock-per-clock.
Other higher than 1.3GHz (Tualatin) Celerons are 1.4 (Tualatin) and 1.7GHz (Willamette) models.
-
To contribute to the Celeron debate, the Cumine Celerons finished at 1Ghz, which is where the Tualatin Celerons began (1.0A). These have continued up to 1.4Ghz, and currently are up with the fastest CPU's available for the socket370 platform. Intel recently introduced the 1.7Ghz and 1.8Ghz Celerons based on the Willamette core - a crippled version of a crippled CPU.

P3 933 Mhz with Voodoo 3 2000 PCI here. (Though I started FS2 on a non-MMX P1 166 Mhz thanks to my V3 which I got for FS2.)
And my Linux box is a MIPSEL R5900 with two VPUs, MIPS R3000 IOP, Integrated Graphics Synthesizer, built in DVD-ROM/CD-ROM drive, and a Dual Shock Analog 2. (In other words, my PS2.) ;) Must remember to update my CVS copy of fs2_open and see if it'll actually run now.

My new computer (for total of $850.00)
P4 1.8Ghz
512DDR Ram
32MB Nvida
70Gig HD
16DVD
?CDRW
DSL connection...
Replaces:
PII400MHZ
360MB Ram
12GigHD
32MB ATI Rage Fury tv/out
8DVD
4x4x4CDRW
(Built by me for $1500.00 4 years ago) at least it had a good run. I will install the video card in the new comp for VCR captures, TV gaming, ect...
-
AMD 550, although I can only run it at 475 for long periods safely...it feels like a 200 though, school comps are 300 and they're running twice as fast in application.
-
two computers here.
PIII 666mhz
Athlon 900mhz
i might swap one for my brothers inheritence
an old server 5000mhz (5 athlon processors)
that is if he does not figure out how valuable it is, hehe :D
-
Nothing, at the moment. :p I am on my dad's really slow office laptop at the moment since my main computer is out for repairs. That is an Athlon 1400, but I might have them upgrade some of the stuff in it depending on my options, so I might nothave the same configuration much longer. This leads me to something else I wanted to ask BTW: they said earlier that I could trade in the existing standard (non-Ti) GF3 for a GF4 Ti4600 for $200; do you all think that this might be a good idea? (since the normal price for the 4600 is double that)
