In the original version of Blue Planet I hear its possible to save him but he does not reappear, Is it possible to save him in the new version?

Sure it is. Doing so, however, will not result in him reappearing in the campaign.

Isn't his fighter self-destructing after Shivan attack? I remember such entry in event list, but I'm not sure either.

He will only self destruct if knocked down to 1 hull.
